A two-consonant conjunct represents two consonants written together with no vowel between them. Its underlying structure is C₁ + ् + C₂: the virama suppresses the inherent a of the first consonant, and the font joins the consonants. Thus क् + त → क्त, as in शक्ति śakti “strength.”
Conjuncts are not a second alphabet. Most are predictable combinations of letters you already know, but their displayed shapes range from transparent half-forms to compact traditional ligatures. This page develops reading strategies using frequent neutral Hindi words. Full cluster phonetics belongs in syllable structure and consonant clusters, and the special behavior of र has its own repha and rakar page.
The productive pattern: first consonant loses its vertical stroke
Many Devanagari consonants have a right-hand vertical stem. Before another consonant, the first member commonly loses that stem and becomes a half-form. The Unicode input remains consonant + virama + consonant; the half-form is a font rendering, not a separate key.
| Conjunct | Built from | Word | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| क्त | क् + त | शक्ति | śakti | strength |
| ब्द | ब् + द | शब्द | śabd | word |
| प्त | प् + त | सप्ताह | saptāh | week |
| स्त | स् + त | व्यस्त | vyast | busy |
| श्च | श् + च | निश्चय | niścay | decision/certainty |
यह शब्द मुझे पहले समझ नहीं आया था।
yah śabd mujhe pahle samajh nahīṃ āyā thā.
I didn't understand this word at first.
वह अगले सप्ताह दिल्ली जाएगी।
vah agle saptāh dillī jāegī.
She will go to Delhi next week.
आज मैं बहुत व्यस्त हूँ।
āj maĩ bahut vyast hū̃.
I'm very busy today.
Do not read शब्द as śabada or व्यस्त as vyasata. The written clusters give you bd and st, while ordinary word-final schwa deletion removes the final inherent a as well. Conjunct parsing and schwa deletion are therefore separate steps.
Doubled consonants and distinctive shapes
When both consonants are the same, the spelling represents a geminate or historically doubled consonant. Hindi spelling preserves contrasts such as पता patā “address/knowledge” and पत्ता pattā “leaf.” This is a true minimal spelling and pronunciation contrast: त versus त्त changes the word.
| Conjunct | Built from | Example | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| च्च | च् + च | बच्चा | baccā |
| ज्ज | ज् + ज | सज्जन | sajjan |
| त्त | त् + त | पत्ता | pattā |
| द्द | द् + द | मुद्दा | muddā |
| द्ध | द् + ध | शुद्ध | śuddh |
The final row, द्ध, is not a true doubled consonant: it combines plain द् with aspirated ध. It appears here because its compact traditional shape must likewise be decoded from its two components.
क्या आपको मेरा नया पता मिल गया?
kyā āpko merā nayā patā mil gayā?
Did you get my new address?
बच्चे ने ज़मीन से सूखा पत्ता उठाया।
bacce ne zamīn se sūkhā pattā uṭhāyā.
The child picked up a dry leaf from the ground.
उसने बैठक में एक ज़रूरी मुद्दा उठाया।
usne baiṭhak meṃ ek zarūrī muddā uṭhāyā.
She raised an important issue at the meeting.
The visual shape does not always reveal whether the modern pronunciation has a long closure, a simplified cluster, or register-conditioned variation. Do not infer detailed phonetics from typography alone. What the spelling establishes is the consonant sequence and the absence of an intervening written vowel.
Other high-frequency combinations
Several conjuncts have to be recognized as wholes because one member changes shape substantially. They are still ordinary sequences in Unicode.
| Conjunct | Built from | Word | Guide reading | Register |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| द्य | द् + य | विद्या | vidyā | formal/neutral compound vocabulary |
| द्व | द् + व | द्वारा | dvārā | formal written |
| त्न | त् + न | रत्न | ratn | neutral/formal |
| ष्ट | ष् + ट | स्पष्ट | spaṣṭ | neutral |
| ग्न | ग् + न | अग्नि | agni | formal/literary; everyday आग “fire” |
कृपया अपना उत्तर स्पष्ट शब्दों में लिखिए।
kripyā apnā uttar spaṣṭ śabdoṃ meṃ likhie.
Please write your answer in clear words.
भुगतान बैंक द्वारा किया गया है।
bhugtān baiṅk dvārā kiyā gayā hai.
The payment was made by the bank. (formal)
यह अंगूठी असली रत्न से बनी है।
yah aṅgūṭhī aslī ratn se banī hai.
This ring is made with a genuine gemstone.
In द्वारा, the conjunct belongs to a formal postposition-like expression frequently used in passive and administrative prose; everyday Hindi often prefers से. The conjunct itself carries no formal meaning—register belongs to the lexical item. Likewise, अग्नि is elevated compared with everyday आग, but ग्न does not automatically make every word formal.
Nasal spelling and important variation
Traditional Sanskrit-derived spellings may use a half nasal before a stop: सम्पर्क, हिन्दी, बन्द. Contemporary standard Hindi very often writes anusvara instead: संपर्क, हिंदी, बंद. Both strategies can represent a homorganic nasal in these positions, but the preferred spelling is lexical and editorial, not something to guess from sound alone.
काफ़ी दिनों से हमारा संपर्क नहीं हुआ।
kāfī dinoṃ se hamārā sampark nahīṃ huā.
We haven't been in contact for quite a few days.
दुकान अभी बंद है।
dukān abhī band hai.
The shop is closed right now.
The forms सम्पर्क and बन्द remain visible in some publications and regional practices, but learners should not convert every anusvara spelling into a conjunct. See anusvara and homorganic nasals for the spelling system itself.
Conjuncts created or exposed by morphology
Some clusters are part of a lexical root, while others lie across a grammatical boundary. Hindi habitual forms illustrate the second type: लग- + -ता → लगता lagtā, चल- + -ती → चलती caltī, and मिल- + -ते → मिलते milte. The virama is not an aspect marker; -ता/-ती/-ते carries habitual morphology, while the conjunct merely spells the adjacent consonants.
यह रास्ता मुझे लंबा लगता है।
yah rāstā mujhe lambā lagtā hai.
This route seems long to me.
हम हर शुक्रवार यहाँ मिलते हैं।
ham har śukravār yahā̃ milte haiṃ.
We meet here every Friday.
Inflection may also change the vowel after a conjunct while leaving the consonant sequence intact: शब्द → शब्दों, पत्ता → पत्ते, व्यस्त → व्यस्तता. Recognizing the base makes the spelling easier to parse and the grammar easier to predict.
A short reading line
अगले सप्ताह वह व्यस्त व्यक्ति नए शब्दों पर स्पष्ट उत्तर देगा।
agle saptāh vah vyast vyakti nae śabdoṃ par spaṣṭ uttar degā.
Next week, that busy person will give a clear answer about the new words.
The line contains प्त, स्त, व्य, ब्द, ष्ट, and त्त. Reading it fluently requires stored words and morphology: शब्दों is the oblique plural of शब्द, and its final written consonant does not acquire an extra spoken a.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting an inherent a inside a conjunct
❌ यह शबद नया है।
Incorrect — शब्द contains ब् + द, with no vowel between them.
✅ यह शब्द नया है।
yah śabd nayā hai.
This word is new.
2. Missing the doubled consonant in a contrastive word
❌ पेड़ से एक पता गिरा।
Incorrect — पता means “address/knowledge”; the word for “leaf” is पत्ता.
✅ पेड़ से एक पत्ता गिरा।
peṛ se ek pattā girā.
A leaf fell from the tree.
3. Replacing the modern standard anusvara spelling mechanically
❌ दुकान अभी बनद है।
Incorrect — neither a full vowel nor an improvised sequence belongs inside बंद.
✅ दुकान अभी बंद है।
dukān abhī band hai.
The shop is closed right now.
4. Confusing a conjunct's register with its spelling function
❌ रोज़ अगनी जलाना ज़रूरी नहीं है।
Incorrect spelling — the learned word is अग्नि; in ordinary conversation, आग is more natural.
✅ पूजा के लिए अग्नि जलाई गई।
pūjā ke lie agni jalāī gaī.
A fire was lit for the worship ritual. (formal/religious)
Key Takeaways
- A two-consonant conjunct spells C₁ + ् + C₂, with no vowel between the members.
- Half-forms and distinctive ligatures are font renderings of ordinary character sequences.
- पता / पत्ता proves that a conjunct can distinguish words, not merely decorate spelling.
- Lexical roots, inflectional boundaries, and register all help determine how a conjunct should be read.
- Never supply every inherent a mechanically; parse the cluster, identify the word, and then apply Hindi schwa deletion.
