The independent letters उ, ऊ, and ऋ begin syllables without a preceding consonant. उ and ऊ represent short u and long ū. ऋ is historically a vocalic r, but in contemporary educated Standard Hindi it is normally pronounced ri in the Sanskrit-derived words that retain it.
That last point matters: this guide's romanization is pronunciation-oriented, so ऋतु is ritu, not the Sanskrit transliteration ṛtu. The symbol ṛ is reserved here for the Hindi flap ड़. Detailed phonetic history and variation belong on the ऋ pronunciation page.
The three letters
| Letter | Romanization | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| उ | u | उधर udhar | there; that way |
| ऊ | ū | ऊन ūn | wool |
| ऋ | ri | ऋतु ritu | season (formal/Sanskritic) |
उधर एक खाली कुर्सी है।
udhar ek khālī kursī hai.
There is an empty chair over there.
यह स्वेटर शुद्ध ऊन का है।
yah sveṭar śuddh ūn kā hai.
This sweater is made of pure wool.
इस ऋतु में बारिश कम होती है।
is ritu meṃ bāriś kam hotī hai.
There is little rain in this season. (formal)
उ and ऊ occur freely in ordinary vocabulary, names, and loans. ऋ has a much narrower distribution: it mainly survives in Sanskrit-derived spellings such as ऋतु ritu “season,” ऋषि riṣi “sage,” and ऋण riṇ “debt” (formal/financial). It is not the productive default for writing any spoken sequence ri.
Independent letters versus attached signs
When these vowels follow a consonant in the same syllable, Hindi uses dependent signs rather than full letters.
| Vowel | Independent | After क | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| u | उ | कु | उधर udhar / कुर्सी kursī |
| ū | ऊ | कू | ऊन ūn / कूदना kūdnā |
| ri in Sanskritic spelling | ऋ | कृ | ऋतु ritu / कृपया kripyā |
कृपया उधर मत जाइए।
kripyā udhar mat jāie.
Please don't go over there. (formal)
The sign ृ attaches below a consonant, as in कृ. Its common modern reading is likewise ri in words such as कृपया kripyā. Do not write independent ऋ after क in the same syllable, and do not try to build independent ऋ by combining र with the short-i sign.
The उ–ऊ length contrast
The difference between उ and ऊ is vowel length, shown as u versus ū. The letters have related but distinct shapes. Their dependent signs ु and ू also differ, so you must learn both the independent and attached forms.
Common word-initial vocabulary supplies clear contrasts even when it does not form neat everyday minimal pairs: उठना uṭhnā “to get up,” उड़ना uṛnā “to fly,” उम्र umr “age,” beside ऊन ūn “wool,” ऊपर ūpar “above,” and ऊँचा ū̃cā “high.”
उठो, आठ बज गए हैं।
uṭho, āṭh baj gae haiṃ.
Get up; it's eight o'clock. (informal)
बैग ऊपर रख दो।
baig ūpar rakh do.
Put the bag up there. (informal)
यह दीवार बहुत ऊँची है।
yah dīvār bahut ū̃cī hai.
This wall is very high.
The last example contains ऊँ, independent ऊ plus chandrabindu. The romanization ū̃ places the nasalization tilde on the vowel. It is not ūn unless an actual nasal consonant is pronounced.
A minimal spelling contrast
Compare standard उधर udhar “there/that way” with the misspelling ऊधर ūdhar. Only the vowel letter changes, but the second form incorrectly lengthens the first vowel and is not the standard word.
उधर मत देखो।
udhar mat dekho.
Don't look over there. (informal)
There is no useful everyday minimal pair for every Hindi vowel letter. Pretending otherwise would force obscure or unnatural vocabulary. The productive lesson is exact: changing उ to ऊ changes the encoded vowel length, even when the result is simply a misspelling rather than another common word.
Why ऋ is different
Historically, ऋ belonged to the Sanskrit vowel system. Modern Hindi inherited its spelling in a limited learned vocabulary, but ordinary speakers generally pronounce it as the sequence ri. That creates a spelling distinction without a dependable pronunciation distinction from ordinary रि.
ऋषि का नाम सबने सुना था।
riṣi kā nām sabne sunā thā.
Everyone had heard the sage's name. (literary/Sanskritic)
बैंक का ऋण अगले साल चुकाना है।
baiṅk kā riṇ agle sāl cukānā hai.
The bank loan must be repaid next year. (formal/financial)
This spelling is lexical and partly etymological. New loans and ordinary native words with ri use रि, not ऋ. For example, the borrowed everyday word रिपोर्ट riporṭ “report” begins with रि. Writing ऋपोर्ट would be wrong.
रिपोर्ट अभी तैयार नहीं है।
riporṭ abhī taiyār nahīṃ hai.
The report isn't ready yet.
ऋतु and रितु: sound does not settle spelling
The common noun ऋतु “season” preserves Sanskritic ऋ. The personal name Ritu is written both ऋतु and रितु, depending on the person's own spelling. In contemporary Hindi both are normally pronounced ritu. This is an important minimal spelling contrast: changing ऋ to रि may preserve the sound but change the conventional spelling or the identity of a name.
Grammar and word formation
These vowel letters do not themselves encode gender or number. ऊन is grammatically masculine, उम्र is feminine, and ऋतु is feminine in standard Hindi; those facts must be learned with the nouns. Inflection normally preserves the lexical initial letter:
- उम्र umr → उम्रें umreṃ “ages”
- ऋतु ritu → ऋतुएँ rituẽ “seasons” (formal)
- ऊन ūn remains a mass noun in its usual reading
इस उम्र में आदतें जल्दी बदलती हैं।
is umr meṃ ādateṃ jaldī badaltī haiṃ.
At this age, habits change quickly.
भारत में कई ऋतुएँ मानी जाती हैं।
bhārat meṃ kaī rituẽ mānī jātī haiṃ.
Several seasons are conventionally recognized in India. (formal)
Notice that ऋतुएँ keeps independent ऋ at the beginning while suffixal vowels appear later. Script choice follows the morphological spelling of the whole word, not a rule that replaces unusual letters during inflection.
Unicode-safe spelling and visual traps
Use the genuine encoded letters उ (U+0909), ऊ (U+090A), and ऋ (U+090B). They are separate characters. Do not construct ऊ by adding an improvised mark to उ, and do not construct ऋ from रि. Conversely, the dependent signs ु, ू, and ृ must attach to a consonant base and should never be left floating at the beginning of a word.
Do not substitute visually similar Latin characters for any stroke or loop. Such a mixture may look plausible in one font but will break searching, sorting, rendering, and text-to-speech because the underlying code points are not Devanagari.
Font rendering can make below-base signs move or reshape around consonants. That does not change the logical Unicode order. Type the consonant first and then the vowel sign, and preserve NFC-normalized text.
Reading still requires more than vowel recognition
Knowing the opening vowel does not make the rest of a word one-letter-one-sound. उम्र contains the conjunct-like consonant sequence mr and has no final schwa: umr, not umara. ऋषि contains ष, romanized ṣ, while ऋण contains retroflex ṇ. Conjunct parsing, lexical spelling, and schwa deletion remain necessary.
Short reading line
उमा ऊपर ऋतु की ऊनी चादर रख रही है।
umā ūpar ritu kī ūnī cādar rakh rahī hai.
Uma is putting Ritu's woolen blanket upstairs.
The line begins successive words with उ, ऊ, and ऋ, followed later by ऊ in ऊनी. Here ऋतु is a person's name written with that individual's conventional spelling; the genitive की agrees with feminine चादर, not with the written shape or gender of the name.
Source-language comparison
English spelling does not consistently mark short versus long u: compare put, rule, and cut. Hindi makes the lexical उ/ऊ distinction visible, and the guide keeps it as u/ū. English also has no equivalent of an inherited vowel letter like ऋ whose modern pronunciation is normally a consonant-plus-vowel sequence. Treat ऋ as a restricted spelling class, not as a productive shortcut for every ri.
Common Mistakes
❌ मुझे ऊधर जाना है।
Incorrect — the standard word उधर begins with short उ.
✅ मुझे उधर जाना है।
mujhe udhar jānā hai.
I have to go over there.
❌ यह उनका स्वेटर है।
Incorrect for the intended meaning 'This sweater is made of wool' — उनका means 'their'; wool is ऊन, and 'made of wool' requires ऊन का.
✅ यह ऊन का स्वेटर है।
yah ūn kā sveṭar hai.
This sweater is made of wool.
❌ रिषि का नाम सबने सुना था।
Incorrect standard spelling — the Sanskrit-derived word is ऋषि, although modern pronunciation begins ri-.
✅ ऋषि का नाम सबने सुना था।
riṣi kā nām sabne sunā thā.
Everyone had heard the sage's name. (literary/Sanskritic)
❌ बैंक का रिण चुकाना है।
Incorrect standard spelling — formal 'debt' is ऋण, not a phonetic respelling with रि.
✅ बैंक का ऋण चुकाना है।
baiṅk kā riṇ cukānā hai.
The bank debt must be repaid. (formal/financial)
❌ ऋपोर्ट आज भी तैयार नहीं है।
Incorrect — ऋ is not a general spelling for ri; the loanword is रिपोर्ट.
✅ रिपोर्ट आज भी तैयार नहीं है।
riporṭ āj bhī taiyār nahīṃ hai.
The report still isn't ready today.
Key Takeaways
Use उ/ऊ as u/ū and learn their length contrast exactly. Use ऋ mainly in inherited Sanskritic spellings and romanize its normal modern pronunciation as ri. After a consonant, use the corresponding dependent signs ु, ू, and ृ. Never construct full vowel letters from detached marks, and remember that word knowledge still controls conjunct parsing and schwa deletion.
