Independent vowels अ आ इ ई

The independent vowel letters अ आ इ ई represent a ā i ī when a syllable begins without a consonant. They are full letters with their own headline; they are not the vowel signs used after a consonant. This difference is structural: आ begins a vowel-led syllable, while ा must attach to a preceding consonant.

This page teaches their spelling and reading behavior. Fine phonetic conditioning—exact tongue position, duration, and variation in connected speech—belongs on the Hindi vowel pronunciation pages.

The four letters

LetterRomanizationExampleMeaning
अaअब abnow
आāआज ājtoday
इiइधर idharhere; this way
ईīईद īdEid

The macron in ā and ī marks a long vowel in the guide's fixed romanization. Do not write English-style aa or ee. Hindi vowel length is lexical: a change from short to long can distinguish words, so the line above the romanized vowel is meaningful.

अब घर चलें?

ab ghar caleṃ?

Shall we go home now?

आज आप कब आएँगे?

āj āp kab āẽge?

When will you come today?

इधर बैठिए, यहाँ जगह है।

idhar baiṭhie, yahā̃ jagah hai.

Sit over here; there is space here.

ईद पर बाज़ार देर तक खुला रहता है।

īd par bāzār der tak khulā rahtā hai.

The market stays open late for Eid.

All four are neutral script forms. The words that contain them may belong to any register: ईद is an everyday proper noun, while a Sanskritic word beginning with आ may be formal. The letter itself carries no register.

Independent letter versus vowel sign

Use an independent letter when the syllable has no consonant to carry its vowel. Use a dependent sign when the vowel follows a consonant in the same syllable.

VowelIndependentAfter कContrast
aअक (inherent a)अब ab / कब kab
āआकाआम ām / काम kām
iइकिइधर idhar / किधर kidhar
īईकीईद īd / नींद nīnd

आम मीठा है, लेकिन दाम ज़्यादा है।

ām mīṭhā hai, lekin dām zyādā hai.

The mango is sweet, but the price is high.

In आम, the syllable begins with a vowel, so it needs independent आ. In दाम, ā follows द, so it is written with the attached sign ा. Beginning a word with bare ा would leave a combining mark without a base and is not valid standard spelling.

💡
Ask one structural question: “Is there a consonant immediately before this vowel in the same syllable?” If yes, use its sign; if no, use the independent vowel letter.

The short a has a special asymmetry. After a consonant, there is normally no visible a sign: the vowel is inherent in the consonant. Thus क is ka. At the beginning of a syllable, however, a must be written explicitly as अ.

Minimal spelling contrasts

The pair अचार acār “pickle” and आचार ācār “conduct; customary practice” (formal/Sanskritic) differs only in the first vowel's length. This is a genuine spelling and meaning contrast.

घर का अचार बहुत अच्छा है।

ghar kā acār bahut acchā hai.

The homemade pickle is very good.

विद्यालय में अच्छा आचार और अनुशासन ज़रूरी हैं।

vidyālay meṃ acchā ācār aur anuśāsan zarūrī haiṃ.

Good conduct and discipline are necessary at school. (formal)

The second pair is इ versus ई. Everyday Hindi has fewer common word-initial minimal pairs for these letters, but the spelling contrast itself remains categorical: इधर is idhar, not īdhar, and ईमेल is īmel, not imel in this standard.

ईमेल इस पते पर भेज दीजिए।

īmel is pate par bhej dījie.

Please send the email to this address.

There is no honest shortcut that predicts every word's vowel length from meaning. You must learn whether a word begins with इ or ई, just as English learners memorize the vowel spelling of sit and seat. Devanagari at least marks the contrast consistently once the spelling is known.

Independent vowels can also occur inside a word

“Independent” means “not attached to a preceding consonant,” not necessarily “first in the word.” If a second vowel begins a new syllable after another vowel, Hindi can use a full vowel letter inside the word.

वह आज नहीं आई।

vah āj nahīṃ āī.

She did not come today.

In आई āī “came” (feminine singular), आ begins the word and ई begins the next vowel-led syllable. The letters remain separate because there is no consonant before ई to carry an ī sign.

कई लोग अभी बाहर हैं।

kaī log abhī bāhar haiṃ.

Several people are still outside.

In कई kaī, क carries inherent a, while independent ई begins the following syllable. This pattern matters in inflection too: the feminine perfective form आई and words such as कई preserve separate vowel letters because spelling tracks syllable structure, not just word boundaries.

Shape recognition and Unicode-safe spelling

Learn the complete shapes, not a list of visual approximations:

  • अ has no added right-hand vertical of आ.
  • आ resembles अ with an added vertical element on the right, but it is a separate encoded letter.
  • इ and ई have distinct upper and lower curves; neither is made by attaching the dependent signs ि or ी to an invisible carrier.

Use genuine Unicode letters अ आ इ ई. Do not begin text with an isolated combining sign, paste a Latin lookalike, or insert spaces between a letter and a mark. Hindi keyboards produce the appropriate encoded sequence, and NFC normalization should be preserved.

The full independent letters also remain stable when words take grammatical material. In आम “mango,” आ stays आ in आमों āmoṃ “mangoes (oblique).” In इधर से idhar se “from here,” the postposition is written separately; it does not alter the initial vowel letter.

आमों को धोकर काटिए।

āmoṃ ko dhokar kāṭie.

Wash the mangoes and cut them.

The vowel letter itself does not determine gender, number, case, or agreement. आम is masculine, आशा “hope” is feminine, and ईमेल is commonly masculine; those grammatical properties belong to whole lexical items.

Reading requires word knowledge

Recognizing अ आ इ ई is only the first step. A reader must still parse conjuncts and suppress written inherent vowels that standard speech deletes. In अच्छा acchā “good,” अ is followed by the conjunct च्छ; the word is not achachā. In इंतज़ार intazār “waiting,” anusvara is pronounced homorganically before त, and the final consonant carries no spoken a.

मुझे अभी इंतज़ार करना है।

mujhe abhī intazār karnā hai.

I have to wait now.

💡
Do not let confidence with the first vowel letter turn into mechanical decoding of the rest of the word. Fluent reading joins vowel recognition to conjunct parsing, nasal interpretation, and schwa deletion.

Short reading line

आज इरा इधर आई।

āj irā idhar āī.

Ira came over here today.

Read the opening vowels in order: आ in आज, इ in इरा and इधर, then आ + ई in आई. The proper name इरा is written and pronounced with short initial i; आई has two long vowels in separate syllables.

Source-language comparison

English has stand-alone vowel letters, but their written values shift heavily by word: a differs in cat, father, and late. Hindi uses distinct independent letters and dependent signs according to syllable structure, while the guide's romanization gives a ā i ī consistently. English also does not normally treat a vowel mark as something that must attach to a consonant base; that attachment is essential in Devanagari.

Do not assume that a equals one English “a” sound or that ī must be respelled ee. The romanization is a stable key; phonetic detail comes later.

Common Mistakes

❌ अज आप कब आएँगे?

Incorrect — आज 'today' begins with long आ, not short अ.

✅ आज आप कब आएँगे?

āj āp kab āẽge?

When will you come today?

❌ आचार बहुत अच्छा है।

Incorrect for the intended meaning 'The pickle is good' — आचार means conduct; pickle is अचार.

✅ अचार बहुत अच्छा है।

acār bahut acchā hai.

The pickle is very good.

❌ ईधर बैठिए।

Incorrect — the standard word इधर begins with short इ.

✅ इधर बैठिए।

idhar baiṭhie.

Sit over here.

❌ इमेल भेज दीजिए।

Incorrect in the guide's standard spelling — ईमेल begins with long ई.

✅ ईमेल भेज दीजिए।

īmel bhej dījie.

Please send the email.

❌ वह आज नहीं आइ।

Incorrect — the feminine perfective form आई ends in independent long ई, not short इ.

✅ वह आज नहीं आई।

vah āj nahīṃ āī.

She did not come today.

Key Takeaways

Use अ आ इ ई for vowel-led syllables and a ā i ī in romanization. After a consonant, short a is normally inherent, while ā i ī use dependent signs. Independent letters may also appear inside a word when a new syllable begins with a vowel, as in आई and कई. Learn vowel length word by word, preserve genuine Unicode forms, and never mechanically pronounce every later inherent a.
