Vowel signs ु ू ृ

The dependent vowel signs ु, ू, and ृ replace a consonant's inherent a with u, ū, and ri. They are usually drawn below the consonant, so their exact appearance depends on the base letter and the font. The forms on this page are neutral contemporary Standard Hindi unless a different register is labeled.

The first two signs are highly productive in everyday vocabulary. The third, ृ, belongs mainly to words inherited or borrowed from Sanskrit. That difference matters: a learner should recognize ृ confidently without assuming it is the ordinary way to spell every spoken sequence that sounds roughly like ri.

The three signs on a consonant

VowelIndependentSign on कReadingExample
uउकुkuकुछ kuch, “some/something”
ūऊकूkūकूदना kūdnā, “to jump”
riऋकृkriकृपया kripyā, “please”

The logical Unicode order is always base consonant + vowel sign: क + ु gives कु, क + ू gives कू, and क + ृ gives कृ. The sign may sit below or curve around part of the base glyph, but it remains attached to that one consonant.

तुम सुबह कब उठते हो?

tum subah kab uṭhte ho?

What time do you get up in the morning?

मुझे तुमसे कुछ पूछना है।

mujhe tumse kuch pūchnā hai.

I want to ask you something.

फूल बहुत सुंदर हैं।

phūl bahut sundar haiṃ.

The flowers are very beautiful.

💡
The mark below a letter is not an optional pronunciation hint. Replacing ु with ू can create a different word, just as changing a vowel letter can in English—except Hindi marks this contrast far more consistently.

The contrast between ु and ू

Hindi spelling distinguishes short u from long ū. Full articulatory and connected-speech detail belongs in the pronunciation guide, but the written distinction itself must be memorized with each word.

The loanword पूल pūl “swimming pool” and पुल pul “bridge” provide a clean spelling contrast: the consonants are identical, and only the vowel sign changes.

नदी पर बना पुल आज बंद है।

nadī par banā pul āj band hai.

The bridge over the river is closed today.

होटल का पूल अभी बंद है।

hoṭal kā pūl abhī band hai.

The hotel's pool is closed right now.

English speakers often rely on familiar-looking spellings such as pool. Do not let the English word determine how another Hindi word is written: पुल is pul, even though English “pull” has a different vowel quality.

The special shapes of रु and रू

With र, many fonts give ु and ू distinctive joined shapes: रु ru and रू rū. These are not separate alphabet letters and should not be assembled from look-alike strokes. Their Unicode sequences remain र + ु and र + ू.

रुको, मैं दो मिनट में आता हूँ।

ruko, maĩ do minaṭ meṃ ātā hū̃.

Wait, I'll be there in two minutes.

उसने पूरी रात फोन बंद रखा।

usne pūrī rāt phon band rakhā.

She kept her phone off all night.

In पूरी pūrī, ू belongs to the lexical stem पूर-, while the final ी marks the feminine form of the adjective. A vowel sign can therefore be part of a root or part of a grammatical ending. English adjectives generally do not change this way, so English speakers need to notice the ending as well as the dictionary stem.

What ृ represents in Modern Hindi

The sign ृ historically writes a syllabic r of Sanskrit. In modern educated Hindi, it is normally pronounced as an ri-like sequence, with some variation by word and speaking style. This pronunciation-oriented guide therefore romanizes it as ri; ṛ is reserved for the flap written ड़. The page on modern pronunciation of ऋ and ृ covers the phonetic detail.

Common words include कृपया kripyā “please,” कृषि kriṣi “agriculture” (formal/administrative), and वृक्ष vrikṣ “tree” (formal/Sanskritic; everyday पेड़).

कृपया फूल मेज़ पर रख दीजिए।

kripyā phūl mez par rakh dījie.

Please put the flowers on the table.

इस क्षेत्र में कृषि मुख्य काम है।

is kṣetr meṃ kriṣi mukhya kām hai.

Agriculture is the main occupation in this region. (formal)

💡
Do not confuse written कृkri with क्रिkri. The first is क + ृ; the second contains a conjunct क्र plus ि. Their modern learner romanizations coincide, but their Unicode sequences and lexical spellings are not interchangeable.

The long Sanskrit sign ॄ exists, but it is not productive in ordinary Modern Hindi and occurs mainly in specialist Sanskrit material. It is not a long counterpart that learners should freely substitute for ृ.

A short reading line

कृपया दूध और फूल उधर रख दीजिए।

kripyā dūdh aur phūl udhar rakh dījie.

Please put the milk and flowers over there.

Notice that the written syllables alone do not settle the pronunciation of the whole word. In सुंदर sundar, for example, the final bare र does not add another pronounced a. Conjuncts such as क्ष in कृषि also have to be parsed as units. Fluent Devanagari reading therefore combines letter knowledge with stored vocabulary and morphology, especially where schwa deletion or clusters are involved.

Unicode-safe spelling

Type the consonant first and then the genuine Devanagari sign. Do not replace the hanging stroke of ु or ू with punctuation, a Latin u, or a hand-built sequence of marks. Keep the text NFC-normalized, and let the font position the sign. A different typeface may make कु, कू, रु, and रू look somewhat different without changing their spelling.

💡
Romanization records the guide's learner reading; Devanagari records the established spelling. Keep कृपया as written even though its modern learner romanization begins kri-.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing long ū in a word with short u

❌ मुझे तुमसे कूछ पूछना है।

Incorrect — कुछ is written with short ु.

✅ मुझे तुमसे कुछ पूछना है।

mujhe tumse kuch pūchnā hai.

I want to ask you something.

2. Using पुल for the English loanword “pool”

❌ बच्चे होटल के पुल में तैर रहे हैं।

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘pool’ — पुल means ‘bridge.’

✅ बच्चे होटल के पूल में तैर रहे हैं।

bacce hoṭal ke pūl meṃ tair rahe haiṃ.

The children are swimming in the hotel's pool.

3. Replacing ृ with an ordinary र sequence

❌ क्रपया यहाँ बैठिए।

Incorrect — the established spelling of कृपया uses ृ, not क्र.

✅ कृपया यहाँ बैठिए।

kripyā yahā̃ baiṭhie.

Please sit here.

4. Adding an a to every final bare consonant

❌ यह फूल सुंदर है।

Incorrect reading as yah phūla sundara hai — standard Hindi deletes the final inherent vowels in फूल and सुंदर.

✅ यह फूल सुंदर है।

yah phūl sundar hai.

This flower is beautiful.

Key Takeaways

  • ु and ू productively write u and ū; ृ is concentrated in Sanskrit-derived vocabulary.
  • The special-looking रु and रू are ordinary Unicode sequences shaped by the font.
  • कृ kri and क्रि kri are different spellings even though their learner romanizations coincide.
  • Correct reading still requires word knowledge: a bare final consonant does not guarantee a spoken a.
