The perfective of जाना “go” is irregular: गया, गई, गए, गईं, not forms built transparently from जा-. As an ordinary motion verb, जाना is intransitive, so its perfective takes no ने and agrees with its unmarked subject. The simple form usually reports a completed departure or journey; auxiliaries can relate that completed event to the present or an earlier past.
The irregular paradigm
| Controller | Simple perfective | Example |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | गया | मोहन गया |
| feminine singular | गई | सीमा गई |
| masculine/mixed plural or honorific | गए | लड़के गए |
| feminine plural, standalone | गईं | लड़कियाँ गईं |
विवेक काम के बाद सीधे घर गया।
vivek kām ke bād sīdhe ghar gayā.
Vivek went straight home after work.
मेघा दवा लेने बाज़ार गई।
meghā davā lene bāzār gaī.
Megha went to the market to get medicine.
दोनों लड़के मैच देखने गए।
donoṃ laṛke maic dekhne gae.
Both boys went to watch the match.
मेरी सहेलियाँ थोड़ी देर पहले चली गईं।
merī saheliyā̃ thoṛī der pahle calī gaīṃ.
My female friends left a little while ago.
Person does not change the perfective: a male speaker says मैं गया, a female speaker मैं गई. Gender and number come from the unmarked subject.
No ने with ordinary going
Motion जाना is intransitive. Even when the traveler acts deliberately, the subject remains unmarked.
मैं कल अकेला संग्रहालय गया।
maĩ kal akelā saṅgrahālay gayā.
I went to the museum alone yesterday. (male speaker)
रीना अपनी इच्छा से विदेश गई।
rīnā apnī icchā se videś gaī.
Reena went abroad of her own accord.
The second journey is clearly volitional, yet ने does not appear. This demonstrates why ने is not an “intentional doer” marker. It belongs primarily to perfective transitive syntax. Compare transitive perfectives with ने.
Destinations often appear directly with motion verbs: घर गया, दिल्ली गई, बाज़ार गए. Other meanings use postpositions naturally: डॉक्टर के पास गई “went to the doctor,” कमरे में गया “went into the room.” Do not insert को after every English to.
Simple perfective and auxiliary-bearing forms
| Form | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|
| वह गया | he went |
| वह गया है | he has gone / he is away |
| वह गया था | he had gone / he went in an earlier past frame |
| वे गए हैं | they have gone |
| वे गए थे | they had gone |
अमन बैंक गया है; थोड़ी देर में लौटेगा।
aman baiṅk gayā hai; thoṛī der meṃ lauṭegā.
Aman has gone to the bank; he'll be back shortly.
जब मैंने फ़ोन किया, अमन बैंक गया था।
jab maĩne fon kiyā, aman baiṅk gayā thā.
When I called, Aman had gone to the bank.
The perfective layer गया presents completed going. Present है connects the result—Aman's absence—to now; past था places the completed departure before another past reference point. Hindi does not encode all this in a one-word equivalent of English went.
Feminine plural before an auxiliary
Standalone feminine plural uses nasalized गईं. Before an auxiliary, contemporary Standard Hindi uses गई, with number marked on हैं/थीं.
दोनों बसें डिपो चली गईं।
donoṃ baseṃ ḍipo calī gaīṃ.
Both buses went back to the depot.
दोनों बसें डिपो चली गई हैं।
donoṃ baseṃ ḍipo calī gaī haiṃ.
Both buses have gone back to the depot.
दोनों बसें डिपो चली गई थीं।
donoṃ baseṃ ḍipo calī gaī thīṃ.
Both buses had gone back to the depot.
Do not write गईं हैं or गईं थीं in the guide's contemporary Standard Hindi. The nonnasalized perfective plus plural auxiliary expresses the same feminine plural controller.
Honorific singular
A respected singular person can trigger plural/honorific agreement.
दादाजी सुबह मंदिर गए।
dādājī subah mandir gae.
Grandfather went to the temple in the morning. (respectful singular)
माताजी पड़ोस में गई हैं।
mātājī paṛos meṃ gaī haiṃ.
Mother has gone next door. (respectful singular)
Masculine honorific गए visibly uses the plural form. Feminine honorific गई हैं keeps feminine गई and shows honorific number on हैं.
Affirmative, negative, and question contrasts
निखिल कल पुणे गया।
nikhil kal puṇe gayā.
Nikhil went to Pune yesterday.
निखिल कल पुणे नहीं गया।
nikhil kal puṇe nahīṃ gayā.
Nikhil did not go to Pune yesterday.
क्या निखिल कल पुणे गया?
kyā nikhil kal puṇe gayā?
Did Nikhil go to Pune yesterday?
Negation and question formation preserve masculine singular गया and do not add ने. Initial क्या changes clause type without English-style inversion.
गया does not always mean “went”
जाना also serves as a vector and as the auxiliary of the passive. In काम किया गया, गया helps form “the work was done”; it does not describe anyone traveling. In वह बात कह गया, the vector can present an action as carried out before departure or as leaving a result behind. These constructions add their own argument structure and event meaning.
सभी आवेदन समय पर जमा किए गए।
sabhī āvedan samay par jamā kie gae.
All the applications were submitted on time.
Plural गए here agrees within a passive predicate with आवेदन. The dedicated passive voice with जाना page treats that system; do not translate every written गया as motion.
Infinitive versus perfective
मुझे कल जयपुर जाना है।
mujhe kal jaypur jānā hai.
I have to go to Jaipur tomorrow.
This is an infinitival necessity with जाना, not a completed journey. Compare मैं कल जयपुर गया “I went to Jaipur yesterday” for a male speaker. The time word alone does not turn the infinitive into a finite verb.
Common Mistakes
Regularizing the perfective
❌ वह कल दिल्ली जाया।
Incorrect — the masculine singular perfective of जाना is गया.
✅ वह कल दिल्ली गया।
vah kal dillī gayā.
He went to Delhi yesterday.
Adding ने to an intransitive motion verb
❌ मीरा ने घर गई।
Incorrect — ordinary जाना takes an unmarked subject.
✅ मीरा घर गई।
mīrā ghar gaī.
Meera went home.
Ignoring feminine agreement
❌ मेरी बहन बाज़ार गया।
Incorrect — feminine बहन requires गई.
✅ मेरी बहन बाज़ार गई।
merī bahan bāzār gaī.
My sister went to the market.
Losing plural agreement
❌ सारे मेहमान चले गया।
Incorrect — masculine plural मेहमान requires चले गए.
✅ सारे मेहमान चले गए।
sāre mehmān cale gae.
All the guests left.
Over-nasalizing before an auxiliary
❌ लड़कियाँ बाहर गईं हैं।
Incorrect in contemporary Standard Hindi — before हैं use गई.
✅ लड़कियाँ बाहर गई हैं।
laṛkiyā̃ bāhar gaī haiṃ.
The girls have gone outside.
Key Takeaways
- Learn irregular गया/गई/गए/गईं rather than building a regular perfective from जा-.
- Ordinary motion जाना is intransitive: no ने, and the unmarked subject controls agreement.
- Auxiliaries create गया है/गया था layers, while feminine plural changes from standalone गईं to गई हैं/गई थीं.
- In passive and vector uses, गया contributes grammar or event structure rather than literal motion.
