ज़रूरत होना expresses need as a relation: a need exists to someone for something. English makes the person the subject of need; Hindi normally puts that person in a को phrase and makes feminine ज़रूरत the head of a noun predicate. This lexical frame determines the genitive form की, the agreement of होना, and the absence of perfective ने.
Core frame: someone needs something
The ordinary structure is experiencer-को + needed item-की + ज़रूरत + होना. The needed item may be a noun, pronoun, or infinitive phrase. Because की agrees with feminine singular ज़रूरत, it remains की regardless of the gender or number of the needed item.
मुझे आज आपकी सलाह की ज़रूरत है।
mujhe āj āpkī salāh kī zarūrat hai.
I need your advice today.
हमें बैठक के लिए दो और कुर्सियों की ज़रूरत है।
hameṃ baiṭhak ke lie do aur kursiyoṃ kī zarūrat hai.
We need two more chairs for the meeting.
Plural कुर्सियों does not produce के ज़रूरत: the genitive agrees forward with ज़रूरत, not backward with कुर्सियों. The person who experiences or possesses the need takes को, as in the wider system of dative-experiencer predicates.
Infinitive complements
An action needed is expressed by an oblique infinitive plus की ज़रूरत: करने की ज़रूरत, जाने की ज़रूरत, बताने की ज़रूरत. The infinitive is oblique because it stands before the genitive marker की.
आपको यह फ़ॉर्म दोबारा भरने की ज़रूरत नहीं है।
āpko yah form dobārā bharne kī zarūrat nahīṃ hai.
You do not need to fill out this form again.
क्या हमें पहले से कमरा बुक करने की ज़रूरत होगी?
kyā hameṃ pahle se kamrā buk karne kī zarūrat hogī?
Will we need to book a room in advance?
English need to sometimes corresponds instead to को + infinitive + होना or पड़ना. मुझे जाना है can mean “I have to leave” in ordinary scheduling, whereas मुझे जाने की ज़रूरत है explicitly presents leaving as necessary. The longer phrase should not be inserted mechanically wherever English uses need.
Agreement and high-frequency forms
In the ordinary singular predicate, होना agrees with feminine ज़रूरत, not with the experiencer or the needed item.
| Category | Form | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| infinitive | ज़रूरत होना | to be needed / for a need to exist |
| simple present | ज़रूरत है | is needed |
| habitual | ज़रूरत होती है | is generally or recurrently needed |
| progressive | ज़रूरत हो रही है | need is currently developing or being felt |
| past state | ज़रूरत थी | was needed |
| perfective | ज़रूरत हुई | a need occurred |
| future | ज़रूरत होगी | will be needed / must be needed |
| subjunctive | ज़रूरत हो | should there be a need |
इस मौसम में पौधों को कम पानी की ज़रूरत होती है।
is mausam meṃ paudhoṃ ko kam pānī kī zarūrat hotī hai.
Plants generally need less water in this season.
नई व्यवस्था के कारण अतिरिक्त कर्मचारियों की ज़रूरत हो रही है।
naī vyavasthā ke kāraṇ atirikt karmacāriyoṃ kī zarūrat ho rahī hai.
Because of the new system, a need for additional staff is developing.
The progressive is possible when circumstances create or intensify a need. For a stable requirement, simple ज़रूरत है is more natural.
Perfective onset and ज़रूरत पड़ना
Bare ज़रूरत हुई is grammatical when a need arose on a particular occasion. Everyday Hindi very often chooses ज़रूरत पड़ी, which profiles necessity imposed by circumstances, or ज़रूरत हो गई, which profiles a change into a state of need.
रास्ते में नक़्शे की ज़रूरत हुई, तो हमने फ़ोन देख लिया।
rāste meṃ naqśe kī zarūrat huī, to hamne fon dekh liyā.
When we needed a map on the way, we checked the phone.
मरम्मत के दौरान हमें एक ख़ास औज़ार की ज़रूरत पड़ी।
marammat ke daurān hameṃ ek xās auzār kī zarūrat paṛī.
During the repair, we ended up needing a special tool.
काम बढ़ा तो एक और सहायक की ज़रूरत हो गई।
kām baṛhā to ek aur sahāyak kī zarūrat ho gaī.
When the workload increased, another assistant became necessary.
None of these predicates licenses ergative ने for the experiencer. The eventive verb remains intransitive and agrees with feminine ज़रूरत.
Future, subjunctive, and directive meanings
Future होगी can predict a later need or express an inference. Subjunctive हो is frequent in conditions. A need cannot normally be ordered into existence, so an imperative of होना is not a useful member of this predicate's everyday paradigm.
अगर आपको किसी दस्तावेज़ की ज़रूरत हो, तो मुझे संदेश भेजिए।
agar āpko kisī dastāvez kī zarūrat ho, to mujhe sandeś bhejie.
If you need any document, send me a message.
अगले चरण में हमें विशेषज्ञ की ज़रूरत होगी।
agle caraṇ meṃ hameṃ viśeṣagya kī zarūrat hogī.
We will need a specialist in the next phase.
Directives instead target recognition or communication of the need: ज़रूरत हो तो बताइए “tell me if needed,” or use चाहिए when advising what should be obtained.
Participles, related predicates, and causation
The most useful non-finite forms are ज़रूरत होने पर “if/when needed,” ज़रूरत होते हुए भी “despite there being a need,” and ज़रूरत पड़ने पर “if the need arises.”
ज़रूरत पड़ने पर आप यह कमरा रात भर इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं।
zarūrat paṛne par āp yah kamrā rāt bhar istemāl kar sakte haiṃ.
If necessary, you can use this room all night.
ज़रूरत होना is neither an auxiliary nor a vector. It combines lexically with पड़ना, महसूस होना, महसूस करना, and पूरा करना: a need arises, is felt, or is met. There is no ordinary causative ज़रूरत कराना. To express causation, say ज़रूरत पैदा करना “create a need” or किसी को आवश्यकता महसूस कराना (formal) “make someone feel a need.”
अनावश्यक डर फैलाकर किसी चीज़ की कृत्रिम ज़रूरत पैदा करना ठीक नहीं है।
anāvaśyak ḍar phailākar kisī cīz kī kritrim zarūrat paidā karnā ṭhīk nahīṃ hai.
It is not right to create an artificial need for something by spreading unnecessary fear.
The idiomatic comparison ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा means more than necessary or excessively.
उसने ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा सामान पैक कर लिया।
usne zarūrat se zyādā sāmān paik kar liyā.
He/She packed more luggage than necessary.

Key Takeaways
ज़रूरत होना is a feminine noun-plus-होना predicate. The person with the need takes को, the needed noun or action takes की, and होना agrees with ज़रूरत. Contrast a state (ज़रूरत थी), an imposed occasion (ज़रूरत पड़ी), and a newly created need (ज़रूरत हो गई); use separate lexical expressions for causation.
