मदद करना is the ordinary neutral expression for helping. It combines feminine noun मदद with करना, following the broader pattern of noun-plus-करना predicates, but the person helped is not encoded like a plain English direct object in every frame. Hindi commonly says किसी की मदद करना, or किसी को कुछ करने में मदद करना when the assisted task is stated. These complement patterns are part of the verb's conjugation in the broad lexical sense.
Principal forms
मदद stays unchanged while करना supplies aspect, tense, mood, and person. In perfective clauses, the irregular forms of करना agree with unmarked feminine मदद: मदद की, not मदद किया.
| Category | Forms |
|---|---|
| infinitive | मदद करना |
| habitual | मदद करता / करती / करते |
| progressive | मदद कर रहा / रही / रहे |
| perfective | मदद की |
| conjunctive | मदद करके |
| prospective | मदद करने वाला / वाली / वाले |
रवि हर शनिवार पड़ोस के बुज़ुर्गों की मदद करता है।
ravi har śanivār paṛos ke buzurgoṃ kī madad kartā hai.
Ravi helps the elderly people in the neighborhood every Saturday.
कुछ स्वयंसेवक अभी भोजन बाँटने में मदद कर रहे हैं।
kuch svayaṃsevak abhī bhojan bā̃ṭne meṃ madad kar rahe haiṃ.
Some volunteers are helping distribute food right now.
Habitual मदद करता है describes repeated or characteristic assistance; the progressive presents an ongoing contribution. General aspect formation is unchanged, but the complements must fit मदद करना itself.
किसी की मदद करना
The most compact person frame is possessor-की + मदद करना: मेरी मदद, आपकी मदद, बच्चों की मदद. The genitive form is always feminine की because it agrees with मदद, not with the person helped.
क्या आप यह हिसाब समझने में मेरी मदद कर सकते हैं?
kyā āp yah hisāb samajhne meṃ merī madad kar sakte haiṃ?
Can you help me understand this calculation?
A male speaker also says मेरी मदद, because the possessive agrees with feminine मदद rather than with the speaker.
संकट के समय पूरे गाँव ने उस परिवार की मदद की।
saṅkaṭ ke samay pūre gā̃v ne us parivār kī madad kī.
During the crisis, the whole village helped that family.
किसी को काम करने में मदद करना
When the assisted activity is explicit, a very productive pattern is person-को + action-infinitive-में + मदद करना. The person is a recipient or beneficiary; में marks the domain or task in which help is provided.
उसने मुझे भारी डिब्बे ऊपर ले जाने में मदद की।
usne mujhe bhārī ḍibbe ūpar le jāne meṃ madad kī.
He/She helped me carry the heavy boxes upstairs.
यह मार्गदर्शिका नए कर्मचारियों को प्रक्रिया समझने में मदद करेगी।
yah mārgdarśikā nae karmacāriyoṃ ko prakriyā samajhne meṃ madad karegī.
This guide will help new employees understand the process.
English can place a bare infinitive after help. Hindi normally marks the activity with oblique infinitive -ने में. If no activity is stated, prefer किसी की मदद करना rather than treating the person as an ordinary unmarked direct object.
Other object-like frames use separate support verbs: किसी को मदद देना/पहुँचाना “give/deliver aid,” किसी से मदद लेना “get help from someone,” and किसी को मदद मिलना “someone receives help.” They do not inherit the syntax of मदद करना automatically.
Perfective alignment and passive
मदद करना is agentive and transitive. A perfective helper normally takes ने. The incorporated noun मदद remains unmarked and controls feminine की, even when the person helped is masculine or plural.
स्थानीय दुकानदारों ने यात्रियों की तुरंत मदद की।
sthānīya dukāndāroṃ ne yātriyoṃ kī turant madad kī.
The local shopkeepers immediately helped the travelers.
The passive is मदद की जाना, with feminine agreement carried into the passive.
तूफ़ान के बाद हर प्रभावित परिवार की मदद की गई।
tūfān ke bād har prabhāvit parivār kī madad kī gaī.
After the storm, every affected family was helped.

Please help me put these chairs outside. (familiar)

muśkil samay meṃ madad karne vāle dostoṃ ko vah kabhī nahīṃ bhūlī.
She never forgot the friends who helped during the difficult time.
Compounds, causatives, and idioms
मदद कर देना presents help as a bounded favor or readily supplied intervention. मदद कर पाना focuses on whether assistance was achievable. मदद करते रहना means continue helping. These combinations carry their own event-structure meanings; मदद करना itself is a noun predicate, not a vector.
तकनीशियन ने फ़ोन पर ही समस्या हल करने में मदद कर दी।

The technician went ahead and helped solve the problem over the phone.
