इंतज़ार करना intazār karnā: to wait

इंतज़ार करना is the ordinary expression for waiting. Its most important lexical fact is that the person, thing, or event awaited appears with का, not with a direct translation of English for: बस का इंतज़ार, आपका इंतज़ार, बारिश रुकने का इंतज़ार. Masculine noun इंतज़ार determines that genitive form and the perfective किया.

Principal forms

इंतज़ार is a fixed masculine nominal element, while करना carries the verbal morphology.

infinitiveइंतज़ार करना
habitualइंतज़ार करता / करती / करते
progressiveइंतज़ार कर रहा / रही / रहे
perfectiveइंतज़ार किया
conjunctiveइंतज़ार करके
prospectiveइंतज़ार करने वाला / वाली / वाले

मैं रोज़ इसी स्टॉप पर बस का इंतज़ार करता हूँ।

maĩ roz isī sṭop par bas kā intazār kartā hū̃.

I wait for the bus at this stop every day. (male speaker)

हम बाहर आपका इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

ham bāhar āpkā intazār kar rahe haiṃ.

We are waiting for you outside.

The habitual describes a repeated routine; the progressive is the ordinary form for waiting already in progress. इंतज़ार करना is not an auxiliary or a vector attached to another verb stem.

The awaited complement takes का

The genitive agrees with masculine singular इंतज़ार, not with the awaited entity. Therefore Hindi has रीना का इंतज़ार, बच्चों का इंतज़ार, and आपका इंतज़ार. A feminine person does not trigger की here.

सभी लोग मुख्य अतिथि का इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

sabhī log mukhya atithi kā intazār kar rahe the.

Everyone was waiting for the chief guest.

हमने आधे घंटे तक रीना का इंतज़ार किया।

hamne ādhe ghaṇṭe tak rīnā kā intazār kiyā.

We waited for Reena for half an hour.

This follows the same forward-agreement logic as other का/के/की possessive phrases: the possessed head इंतज़ार is masculine singular.

💡
Translate English wait for X as X का इंतज़ार करना. The postposition belongs to the Hindi noun frame, not to the English preposition.

Waiting for an action or event

An awaited event is normally an infinitive clause in -ने का before इंतज़ार: आने का इंतज़ार, बारिश रुकने का इंतज़ार, नतीजे घोषित होने का इंतज़ार. The infinitive is oblique before का.

यात्री दरवाज़ा खुलने का इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।

yātrī darvāzā khulne kā intazār kar rahe the.

The passengers were waiting for the door to open.

निवेशक नई नीति घोषित होने का इंतज़ार करेंगे।

niveśak naī nīti ghoṣit hone kā intazār kareṅge.

Investors will wait for the new policy to be announced.

When the waiting has a purpose rather than an awaited object, के लिए can appear elsewhere in the sentence: मैं बात करने के लिए रुका “I stayed in order to talk.” That does not license an English-like बस के लिए इंतज़ार in place of standard बस का इंतज़ार.

Duration and temporal boundaries

An extent can be unmarked or followed by तक: दो घंटे इंतज़ार करना, शाम तक इंतज़ार करना. A starting point takes से, and the progressive is common when the wait continues up to the present.

मैं सुबह नौ बजे से आपके जवाब का इंतज़ार कर रही हूँ।

maĩ subah nau baje se āpke javāb kā intazār kar rahī hū̃.

I have been waiting for your reply since nine this morning. (female speaker)

कृपया पाँच मिनट और इंतज़ार कीजिए।

kripyā pā̃c minaṭ aur intazār kījie.

Please wait another five minutes.

Hindi uses a present progressive with से for an ongoing wait; it does not need a separate tense mirroring English present perfect progressive.

Perfective alignment

इंतज़ार करना is an agentive noun-plus-करना predicate. In the simple perfective, the waiter takes ने, and unmarked masculine इंतज़ार yields किया. The gender of the awaited person is irrelevant.

उसने आख़िरी ट्रेन का बहुत देर तक इंतज़ार किया।

usne āxirī ṭren kā bahut der tak intazār kiyā.

He/She waited a long time for the last train.

The combination can also be passivized, especially when the waiting itself is foregrounded: काफ़ी इंतज़ार किया गया “a considerable wait was made,” though an active clause is generally more natural in conversation.

बेहतर है कि हम बारिश रुकने का इंतज़ार करें।

behtar hai ki ham bāriś rukne kā intazār kareṃ.

It is better that we wait for the rain to stop.

Imperatives and participles

The imperative series is intimate इंतज़ार कर, familiar इंतज़ार करो, and respectful इंतज़ार कीजिए. Respectful इंतज़ार करिए also occurs. In service encounters, थोड़ा इंतज़ार कीजिए is polite but can sound abrupt without कृपया, ज़रा, or a reason.

ज़रा यहीं इंतज़ार करो, मैं टिकट लेकर आता हूँ।

zarā yahīṃ intazār karo, maĩ ṭikaṭ lekar ātā hū̃.

Wait right here a moment; I'll go get the tickets. (familiar, male speaker)

Participles include इंतज़ार करते हुए, इंतज़ार करके, इंतज़ार किया हुआ, and इंतज़ार करने वाला. The perfective participial form is less common attributively than a finite clause; लंबे समय से इंतज़ार कर रहे लोग is usually clearer than a literal “waited people.”

Compounds, causative, and idiom

इंतज़ार कर लेना can frame a manageable wait accepted for the moment; इंतज़ार कर पाना concerns ability or patience; इंतज़ार करते रहना emphasizes continuation. These combinations are selected for their event structure rather than serving as interchangeable tense markers.

अगर दुकान बंद है, तो बाहर थोड़ी देर इंतज़ार कर लेना।

agar dukān band hai, to bāhar thoṛī der intazār kar lenā.

If the shop is closed, just wait outside for a little while. (familiar)

The causative इंतज़ार करवाना means make or keep someone waiting. The person made to wait normally takes को.

क्लिनिक ने मरीजों को बिना सूचना के एक घंटा इंतज़ार करवाया।

klinik ne marīzoṃ ko binā sūcnā ke ek ghaṇṭā intazār karvāyā.

The clinic made the patients wait an hour without notice.

The idiomatic image आँखें बिछाकर इंतज़ार करना means wait eagerly and warmly for someone; it is (literary or emphatic) rather than neutral scheduling language.

पूरा परिवार आँखें बिछाकर बेटी के लौटने का इंतज़ार कर रहा था।

pūrā parivār ā̃kheṃ bichākar beṭī ke lauṭne kā intazār kar rahā thā.

The whole family was eagerly awaiting their daughter's return. (emphatic)

Common Mistakes

❌ मैं अगली बस को इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ।

Incorrect — the awaited bus is not a को-marked direct object.

✅ मैं अगली बस का इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ।

maĩ aglī bas kā intazār kar rahā hū̃.

I am waiting for the next bus. (male speaker)

❌ हम रीना की इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

Incorrect — का agrees with masculine इंतज़ार, not with feminine Reena.

✅ हम बाहर रीना का इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं।

ham bāhar rīnā kā intazār kar rahe haiṃ.

We are waiting outside for Reena.

❌ उसने ट्रेन का इंतज़ार की।

Incorrect — masculine इंतज़ार controls किया.

✅ उसने अगली ट्रेन का इंतज़ार किया।

usne aglī ṭren kā intazār kiyā.

He/She waited for the next train.

❌ हम दरवाज़ा खुलना का इंतज़ार करेंगे।

Incorrect — the infinitive is oblique before का.

✅ हम दरवाज़ा खुलने का इंतज़ार करेंगे।

ham darvāzā khulne kā intazār kareṅge.

We will wait for the door to open.

💡
The stable chain is X का इंतज़ार किया: masculine का before इंतज़ार, then masculine किया in the perfective. English for does not determine either form.

Key Takeaways

इंतज़ार करना is a masculine noun-plus-करना predicate. The awaited person, thing, or event takes का, with an oblique infinitive in action complements. A perfective waiter takes ने and the predicate is इंतज़ार किया. Duration phrases, compounds, and causative करवाना add meanings that English wait leaves implicit.
