शुरू करना is the transitive predicate “start, begin, launch.” शुरू is an indeclinable Perso-Arabic loan element; करना supplies the verbal grammar and introduces the initiator. The object may be an event noun, project, machine, service, or an activity expressed by an infinitive.
Loan element plus करना
शुरू does not inflect. करना carries agreement, aspect, tense, and mood.
| Category | Forms |
|---|---|
nagar pariṣad agle mahīne naī bas sevā śurū karegī.
The municipal council will start a new bus service next month.
तकनीशियन अभी मुख्य सर्वर शुरू कर रहा है।
taknīśiyan abhī mukhya sarvar śurū kar rahā hai.
The technician is starting the main server now.
The verb is not an auxiliary here: करना verbalizes the loan element into an agentive start predicate. See Perso-Arabic noun predicates for the broader pattern.
Starting an event or starting to act
A noun object names what is launched: बैठक शुरू करना, काम शुरू करना, अभियान शुरू करना. To start doing an activity, Hindi commonly places the full infinitive before शुरू करना: पढ़ना शुरू करना, बारिश के बारे में बात करना शुरू करना.
उसने पिछले साल योग सीखना शुरू किया।
usne pichle sāl yog sīkhnā śurū kiyā.
She started learning yoga last year.
घंटी बजते ही शिक्षक ने पढ़ाना शुरू कर दिया।
ghaṇṭī bajte hī śikṣak ne paṛhānā śurū kar diyā.
As soon as the bell rang, the teacher started teaching.
The activity infinitive keeps -ना. This differs from bare-stem vector compounds. पढ़ना शुरू करना is not पढ़ शुरू करना.
Transitive perfective agreement
The initiator takes ने in the perfective. An unmarked noun object can control the करना participle: योजना शुरू की, कार्यक्रम शुरू किया, कक्षाएँ शुरू कीं. With an infinitival activity, default masculine singular शुरू किया is usual.
विश्वविद्यालय ने शाम की दो नई कक्षाएँ शुरू कीं।
viśvavidyālay ne śām kī do naī kakṣāẽ śurū kīṃ.
The university started two new evening classes.
मैंने रोज़ पैदल चलना शुरू किया।
maĩne roz paidal calnā śurū kiyā.
I started walking every day.
शुरू itself never changes; the contrast कीं/किया is borne by करना.

pichle mahīne śurū kī huī yojnā abhī adhūrī hai.

शुरू कर देना, शुरू होना, and causation
शुरू कर देना presents initiation as prompt, decisive, or sometimes premature. The final देना bears the finite morphology.
बिना सबकी राय लिए उन्होंने काम शुरू कर दिया।
binā sabkī rāy lie unhoṃne kām śurū kar diyā.
They started the work without getting everyone's opinion. (honorific)
Intransitive शुरू होना makes the event itself the subject: बैठक शुरू हुई. To arrange for another person to start something, use शुरू करवाना; शुरू कराना also occurs for causing or commissioning initiation.
निर्माता ने निर्देशक से अगला दृश्य शुरू करवाया।
nirmātā ne nirdeśak se aglā driśya śurū karvāyā.
The producer had the director start the next scene.
A common discourse expression कहाँ से शुरू करूँ? means “Where should I begin?” and can introduce a complicated story or explanation.
Common Mistakes

Incorrect for an event beginning — use intransitive शुरू होना.
✅ बैठक नौ बजे शुरू हुई।

The meeting started at nine.

viśvavidyālay ne naī kakṣāẽ śurū kīṃ.

usne dauṛnā śurū kiyā.
She started running.
❌ अब काम की शुरूआत करो।
Incorrect spelling — the related noun is शुरुआत, while the predicate retains शुरू.

ab kām kī śurūāt karo.
Start the work now. (familiar)
Key Takeaways
शुरू करना is an agentive Perso-Arabic loan predicate whose inflection appears on करना. It takes event nouns or full infinitival activities. Perfective initiators take ने, and eligible noun objects control agreement. शुरू कर देना sharpens initiation, while शुरू करवाना adds an arranger and intermediary.
