भेजना bhejnā: to send

भेजना is the transitive verb “send, dispatch.” Its arguments include a sender, a theme being sent, and a recipient or destination. Hindi marks people and places differently according to their role, so English “send X to Y” does not map to one invariant postposition.

Stem and principal forms

The stem is भेज-.

कंपनी हर महीने ग्राहकों को बिल भेजती है।

kampanī har mahīne grāhkoṃ ko bil bhejtī hai.

The company sends bills to customers every month.

मैं अभी आपको दस्तावेज़ ईमेल से भेज रहा हूँ।

maĩ abhī āpko dastāvez īmel se bhej rahā hū̃.

I'm sending you the documents by email now. (male speaker)

Nonperfective agreement follows the sender. Instrument or channel can take से: डाक से, ईमेल से, कूरियर से.

Recipient, destination, and theme

A human recipient takes को: रीना को संदेश भेजना. A person sent somewhere is also usually marked by को: डॉक्टर को गाँव भेजना. A place goal is often bare—दिल्ली भेजना, घर भेजना—or specified with में, पर, के पास, तक according to the spatial relation.

मुख्यालय ने दो इंजीनियरों को जयपुर भेजा।

mukhyālay ne do iñjīniyaroṃ ko jaypur bhejā.

Head office sent two engineers to Jaipur.

कृपया पार्सल मेरे दफ़्तर के पते पर भेजिए।

kripyā pārsal mere daftar ke pate par bhejie.

Please send the parcel to my office address.

The theme may be a message, object, person, money, link, or abstract signal. Human themes generally take को, while inanimate themes often remain unmarked.

💡
Separate destination from recipient. A city is commonly a bare goal (दिल्ली भेजना), a person receiving something takes को, and an address as a target commonly takes पर.

Perfective transitivity and agreement

भेजना is transitive. A perfective sender takes ने. An unmarked inanimate theme can control agreement; a को-marked animate or specific theme blocks agreement and gives default masculine singular भेजा.

सोनल ने सारी तस्वीरें शाम को भेजीं।

sonal ne sārī tasvīreṃ śām ko bhejīṃ.

Sonal sent all the photographs in the evening.

प्रबंधक ने नई अधिकारी को मुंबई भेजा।

prabandhak ne naī adhikārī ko mumbaī bhejā.

The manager sent the new female officer to Mumbai.

Feminine plural तस्वीरें selects भेजीं. In the second sentence, feminine अधिकारी is marked by को, so default भेजा is required.

फ़ाइल तैयार होते ही मैं आपको भेज दूँगी।

fāil taiyār hote hī maĩ āpko bhej dū̃gī.

As soon as the file is ready, I'll send it to you. (female speaker)

ज़रूरी है कि अस्पताल नमूने आज ही प्रयोगशाला भेजे।

zarūrī hai ki aspatāl namūne āj hī prayogśālā bheje.

It is essential that the hospital send the samples to the laboratory today.

Imperatives and participles

The imperatives are intimate भेज, familiar भेजो, and respectful भेजिए. Non-finite forms include भेजकर, भेजते हुए, भेजा हुआ, and भेजने वाला.

रसीद की तस्वीर खींचकर मुझे भेज देना।

rasīd kī tasvīr khīñckar mujhe bhej denā.

Take a picture of the receipt and send it to me. (familiar request)

कल भेजा हुआ पैकेट आज पहुँच गया।

kal bhejā huā paikeṭ āj pahũc gayā.

The package sent yesterday arrived today.

भेज देना, वापस भेजना, and result

भेज देना profiles prompt or decisive dispatch and can imply sending something away. वापस भेजना means send back; आगे भेजना means forward; भेज पाना means manage to send.

अगर दस्तावेज़ अधूरा हो, तो उसे वापस भेज दीजिए।

agar dastāvez adhūrā ho, to use vāpas bhej dījie.

If the document is incomplete, please send it back.

भेजना describes dispatch, not arrival. To state successful receipt, add पहुँचना, मिलना, or another result: संदेश भेजा, लेकिन पहुँचा नहीं “I sent the message, but it did not arrive.”

भिजवाना: arranging dispatch

The causative भिजवाना means have/get something sent, delivered, or brought through an intermediary. This is not merely a more formal synonym of भेजना; it adds an arranging causer.

मैंने दुकान से दवाइयाँ घर भिजवाईं।

maĩne dukān se davāiyā̃ ghar bhijvāīṃ.

I had the medicines delivered home from the shop.

The arranger takes ने, source/intermediary दुकान से takes से, destination घर is bare, and unmarked feminine plural दवाइयाँ controls भिजवाईं. See indirect causatives in -वाना.

An idiomatic extension घर भेज देना can mean dismiss someone or send them packing, depending on context; it need not describe ordinary travel home.

Common Mistakes

❌ मैंने रीना से संदेश भेजा।

Incorrect for a recipient — रीना takes को; से would mark a source or channel.

✅ मैंने रीना को संदेश भेजा।

maĩne rīnā ko sandeś bhejā.

I sent Reena a message.

❌ उसने तीन तस्वीरें भेजा।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural तस्वीरें requires भेजीं.

✅ उसने तीन तस्वीरें भेजीं।

usne tīn tasvīreṃ bhejīṃ.

She sent three photographs.

❌ कंपनी ने उस नई कर्मचारी चेन्नई भेजी।

Incorrect — the specific human theme उस नई कर्मचारी requires को, which in turn gives default भेजा.

✅ कंपनी ने उस नई कर्मचारी को चेन्नई भेजा।

kampanī ne us naī karmacārī ko cennaī bhejā.

The company sent that new female employee to Chennai.

❌ हमने कूरियर दवाइयाँ भिजवाईं।

Incorrect — the intermediary or source requires से.

✅ हमने कूरियर से दवाइयाँ भिजवाईं।

hamne kūriyar se davāiyā̃ bhijvāīṃ.

We had the medicines sent by courier.

💡
Sending and arrival are separate events. भेज दिया commits the theme to a path; it does not guarantee पहुँच गया “arrived.”

Key Takeaways

भेजना is a transitive dispatch verb with distinct slots for sender, theme, recipient, destination, and channel. Perfective senders take ने, while an unmarked theme may control agreement and a को-marked animate theme triggers default भेजा. भेज देना sharpens dispatch; भिजवाना adds an arranger and intermediary.
