Travel directions and transport

Travel Hindi is built from recurring predicate frames: go by a vehicle with से, get into one with में चढ़ना, get off with से उतरना, and ask where a place is with किस तरफ़ or how to reach it with कैसे जाना. Learning only nouns such as बस, स्टेशन, and टिकट leaves out the grammar that makes them usable.

The ordinary phrases below are neutral spoken Hindi. Directions to a stranger use respectful आप-level imperatives; familiar चलो, मुड़ो, उतरना suit friends and family. Very Sanskritized परिवहन, प्रस्थान, गंतव्य belong chiefly to announcements or formal writing, not an everyday request at a bus stop. For the wider instrumental pattern behind travel by bus or train, see से as means.

Ask for the route, not a translated English “way”

Two high-frequency questions divide the task neatly. स्टेशन किस तरफ़ है? asks for orientation: which direction is it in? स्टेशन कैसे जाएँ? asks for a route or means: how should we get there? रास्ता is used when the route itself matters, especially in रास्ता बताना/पूछना.

माफ़ कीजिए, मेट्रो स्टेशन किस तरफ़ है?

māf kījie, meṭro sṭeśan kis taraf hai?

Excuse me, which way is the metro station? (respectful)

यहाँ से हवाई अड्डे तक कैसे जाएँ?

yahā̃ se havāī aḍḍe tak kaise jāeṃ?

How do we get to the airport from here? (respectful or inclusive)

In the second example, से marks the point of departure. The destination may be unmarked before a motion verb—हवाई अड्डे जाना, दिल्ली पहुँचना—or marked more specifically with तक for an endpoint and पर for arrival at a site.

इस सड़क पर सीधे जाइए, फिर दूसरे मोड़ पर बाएँ मुड़िए।

is saṛak par sīdhe jāie, phir dūsre moṛ par bāẽ muṛie.

Go straight on this road, then turn left at the second bend. (respectful)

पुल पार करके दाएँ मुड़ना; होटल सामने ही दिख जाएगा।

pul pār karke dāẽ muṛnā; hoṭal sāmne hī dikh jāegā.

Cross the bridge and turn right; you'll see the hotel straight ahead. (familiar instruction)

सीधे is the conventional adverb with जाना, while दाएँ/बाएँ मुड़ना packages direction with the turning predicate. English speakers sometimes overuse को for a destination. Hindi motion predicates often need no such marker: घर जाना, बाज़ार जाना, जयपुर पहुँचना.

💡
Learn directions as predicate-sized chunks: सीधे जाना, दाएँ मुड़ना, पुल पार करना, स्टेशन पर पहुँचना. The noun alone does not tell you the postposition or verb.

Means of transport takes से

The standard frame is vehicle + से + जाना/आना/पहुँचना. Instrumental से presents the vehicle as the means by which the journey happens.

हम बस से जाएँगे और शाम तक ट्रेन से लौटेंगे।

ham bas se jāẽge aur śām tak ṭren se lauṭeṅge.

We'll go by bus and return by train by evening.

यहाँ से पुराने शहर तक ऑटो से कितना समय लगेगा?

yahā̃ se purāne śahar tak oṭo se kitnā samay lagegā?

How long will it take by auto-rickshaw from here to the old city?

For a habitual mode of travel, मैं दफ़्तर मेट्रो से जाता हूँ is more natural than mechanically translating English take the metro. Hindi can use बस लेना, especially when choosing a service or route, but बस पकड़ना emphasizes catching it and बस से जाना emphasizes the means of travel.

अगर आठ बजे वाली बस पकड़नी है, तो अभी निकलना होगा।

agar āṭh baje vālī bas pakaṛnī hai, to abhī nikalnā hogā.

If we have to catch the eight o'clock bus, we'll need to leave now.

The agreeing infinitive पकड़नी is feminine because बस is feminine. With ट्रेन छूटना, the vehicle itself is the subject and the predicate means “be missed/depart before one catches it.”

ट्रैफ़िक की वजह से हमारी ट्रेन छूट गई।

ṭraifik kī vajah se hamārī ṭren chūṭ gaī.

We missed our train because of the traffic.

The literal grammar is “our train got away,” which explains feminine छूट गई. This is a useful reminder that English “we missed” and Hindi हमारी ट्रेन छूट गई package the event from opposite viewpoints.

Boarding and getting off select different postpositions

Boarding uses vehicle + में चढ़ना because the traveler enters it. Getting off uses vehicle + से उतरना because the traveler separates from it. The same contrast works for buses, trains, and many other shared vehicles.

आप तीसरे प्लेटफ़ॉर्म से ट्रेन में चढ़िए।

āp tīsre pleṭform se ṭren meṃ caṛhie.

Board the train from platform three. (respectful)

अगले स्टॉप पर बस से उतर जाना।

agle sṭop par bas se utar jānā.

Get off the bus at the next stop. (familiar reminder)

चढ़ना and उतरना are intransitive. For helping or making someone board or alight, use causatives चढ़ाना and उतारना: ड्राइवर ने हमें गेट पर उतार दिया. The added दिया profiles the drop-off as a completed service.

कृपया हमें मुख्य द्वार के पास उतार दीजिए।

kripyā hameṃ mukhya dvār ke pās utār dījie.

Please drop us near the main entrance. (respectful request to a driver)

Tickets, platforms, and arrival

Use किसी जगह के लिए टिकट for a ticket to a destination, टिकट लेना/ख़रीदना to obtain one, and टिकट कटाना for having a ticket issued (common conversational). प्लेटफ़ॉर्म नंबर and सीट नंबर are established modern compounds.

लखनऊ के लिए अगली ट्रेन का टिकट कहाँ मिलेगा?

lakhnaū ke lie aglī ṭren kā ṭikaṭ kahā̃ milegā?

Where can I get a ticket for the next train to Lucknow?

For arrival, neutral पहुँचना takes an unmarked town or destination, but पर identifies a precise arrival point: स्टेशन पर पहुँचना, होटल पर पहुँचना. With an enclosed or broad location, में may locate the resulting presence: दिल्ली में पहुँचते ही. At A2, store the common collocations rather than adding को to every destination.

हम समय पर स्टेशन पहुँच गए, लेकिन ट्रेन आधे घंटे देर से आई।

ham samay par sṭeśan pahũc gae, lekin ṭren ādhe ghaṇṭe der se āī.

We reached the station on time, but the train arrived half an hour late.

A short dialogue at a bus stop

माफ़ कीजिए, क्या यह बस विश्वविद्यालय तक जाएगी?

māf kījie, kyā yah bas viśvavidyālay tak jāegī?

Excuse me, does this bus go as far as the university? (respectful)

हाँ, लेकिन आपको सिटी सेंटर पर बस बदलनी पड़ेगी।

hā̃, lekin āpko siṭī seṇṭar par bas badalnī paṛegī.

Yes, but you'll have to change buses at City Center. (respectful)

वहाँ उतरकर दूसरी बस कहाँ से मिलेगी?

vahā̃ utarkar dūsarī bas kahā̃ se milegī?

After getting off there, where can I catch the other bus?

Here आपको ... बदलनी पड़ेगी expresses necessity with a को-marked person, while feminine बस controls बदलनी and पड़ेगी. बस मिलेगी literally presents the service as becoming available; it is a natural way to ask where one can get a bus.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding को to an ordinary destination

❌ हम कल दिल्ली को जाएँगे।

Incorrect in neutral travel Hindi—दिल्ली is normally unmarked as the destination of जाना.

✅ हम कल दिल्ली जाएँगे।

ham kal dillī jāẽge.

We'll go to Delhi tomorrow.

2. Using में for the means of transport

❌ मैं दफ़्तर बस में जाता हूँ।

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘by bus’—में locates someone inside; means of travel takes से.

✅ मैं दफ़्तर बस से जाता हूँ।

maĩ daftar bas se jātā hū̃.

I go to the office by bus. (male speaker)

3. Reversing boarding and alighting markers

❌ अगले स्टॉप पर बस में उतरिए।

Incorrect—getting off is separation from the bus and takes बस से.

✅ अगले स्टॉप पर बस से उतरिए।

agle sṭop par bas se utarie.

Please get off the bus at the next stop. (respectful)

4. Copying English “we missed the train” word for word

❌ हमने ट्रेन को मिस किया।

Understandable Hinglish, but not the neutral established travel expression.

✅ हमारी ट्रेन छूट गई।

hamārī ṭren chūṭ gaī.

We missed our train.

5. Using a familiar command with a stranger

❌ मुझे स्टेशन का रास्ता बता।

Grammatically possible only with तू; socially rude to an unfamiliar adult.

✅ कृपया मुझे स्टेशन का रास्ता बता दीजिए।

kripyā mujhe sṭeśan kā rāstā batā dījie.

Please tell me the way to the station. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

  • Ask किस तरफ़? for orientation and कैसे जाएँ? for a route or means.
  • Travel बस से, board बस में, and get off बस से.
  • A destination with जाना/पहुँचना is often unmarked; use तक for an endpoint and पर for a precise site.
  • Hindi normally says ट्रेन छूट गई, viewing the train as having got away, rather than copying English transitivity.
