Hindi ख़ुद xud and स्वयं svayaṃ correspond to several English uses of self. They can emphasize an argument—“I myself,” “she herself”—and, with a case marker, can form reflexive expressions such as ख़ुद को xud ko “oneself” or स्वयं से svayaṃ se “from oneself.” ख़ुद is neutral and extremely common in conversation; स्वयं is characteristically formal and Sanskritic, especially in instructions, public notices, and formal prose.
Neither word identifies person, gender, number, or honorific level by itself. Its antecedent and the surrounding verb supply those features. This makes the pair very different from English myself, yourself, herself, and themselves, which have separate forms.
One invariant form, many antecedents
| Antecedent | Everyday form | Formal form |
|---|---|---|
| मैं “I” | मैं ख़ुद maĩ xud | मैं स्वयं maĩ svayaṃ |
| हम “we” | हम ख़ुद ham xud | हम स्वयं ham svayaṃ |
| तुम “you” familiar | तुम ख़ुद tum xud | तुम स्वयं tum svayaṃ |
| आप “you” respectful | आप ख़ुद āp xud | आप स्वयं āp svayaṃ |
| वह/वे “he, she, they” | वह/वे ख़ुद vah/ve xud | वह/वे स्वयं vah/ve svayaṃ |
मैं ख़ुद जाकर मैनेजर से बात करूँगी।
maĩ xud jākar mainejar se bāt karū̃gī.
I will go and speak to the manager myself. (everyday; female speaker)
वे स्वयं इस समिति की अध्यक्षता करेंगे।
ve svayaṃ is samiti kī adhyakṣatā kareṅge.
He will chair this committee himself. (formal, respectful singular reference)
In the first example, feminine करूँगी agrees with मैं; in the second, masculine plural/honorific करेंगे agrees with respectful singular वे. ख़ुद/स्वयं remains unchanged. Honorificity is expressed by the pronoun and verb, not by a special respectful reflexive.
Emphatic “self”: the person and no substitute
Placed beside a noun or pronoun, ख़ुद/स्वयं is an intensifier. It says that the referent personally performed the action, often contrary to an expectation that someone else would do it. Removing the intensifier leaves a grammatical sentence but removes that emphasis.
मालिक ने ख़ुद दरवाज़ा खोला; किसी कर्मचारी को नहीं बुलाया।
mālik ne xud darvāzā kholā; kisī karmacārī ko nahīṃ bulāyā.
The owner opened the door himself; he did not call an employee.
रिपोर्ट स्वयं निदेशक ने लिखी है।
riporṭ svayaṃ nirdeśak ne likhī hai.
The director himself wrote the report. (formal)
The intensifier can follow its antecedent or appear in a focused position near the phrase it emphasizes. रिपोर्ट स्वयं निदेशक ने... is marked, formal word order that puts contrast on the director. In ordinary conversation, निदेशक ने रिपोर्ट ख़ुद लिखी है is more natural.
Reflexive objects require a case marker
When “self” is an object, recipient, source, or other case-marked participant, attach the same marker that an ordinary noun phrase would require. The marker is written separately.
| Form | Typical meaning |
|---|---|
| ख़ुद को xud ko / स्वयं को svayaṃ ko | oneself as object or recipient |
| ख़ुद से xud se / स्वयं से svayaṃ se | from, with, by, or compared with oneself |
| ख़ुद पर xud par / स्वयं पर svayaṃ par | on oneself |
| ख़ुद के लिए xud ke lie / स्वयं के लिए svayaṃ ke lie | for oneself |
अनिता ने आईने में ख़ुद को देखा और मुस्करा दी।
anitā ne āīne meṃ xud ko dekhā aur muskarā dī.
Anita saw herself in the mirror and smiled.
कभी-कभी हमें स्वयं से कठिन सवाल पूछने चाहिए।
kabhī-kabhī hameṃ svayaṃ se kaṭhin savāl pūchne cāhie.
Sometimes we should ask ourselves difficult questions. (formal)
Unlike personal pronouns such as मैं → मुझ-, neither ख़ुद nor स्वयं has a special oblique stem. The postposition follows the unchanged word: ख़ुद से, not a newly inflected form.
ख़ुद versus स्वयं: register, not meaning alone
The two words overlap substantially, but they are not interchangeable in tone. ख़ुद is natural in neutral educated speech and informal conversation. स्वयं is normal in formal instructions, academic or administrative prose, and elevated emphasis; repeated use in casual conversation can sound stiff.
तुम यह फ़ॉर्म ख़ुद भर दो।
tum yah form xud bhar do.
Fill out this form yourself. (informal)
कृपया यह प्रपत्र स्वयं भरें।
kripyā yah prapatr svayaṃ bhareṃ.
Please complete this form yourself. (formal/respectful)
This minimal pair changes vocabulary, command form, and reflexive register together. तुम... भर दो is familiar; the subjectless respectful imperative भरें has an understood आप, hence plural/honorific grammar.
Not the same as अपना or अपने आप
English self hides three different Hindi jobs:
- ख़ुद/स्वयं intensifies a person or combines with a case marker: “myself,” “herself.”
- अपना apnā is a possessive agreeing with an owned noun: “one's own.”
- अपने आप apne āp often means “by oneself,” “without help,” or “automatically.”
रीना ने अपनी प्रस्तुति ख़ुद तैयार की।
rīnā ne apnī prastuti xud taiyār kī.
Reena prepared her own presentation herself.
बत्ती कुछ देर बाद अपने आप बंद हो जाती है।
battī kuch der bād apne āp band ho jātī hai.
The light switches off automatically after a while.
In the first, feminine अपनी expresses same-subject possession of प्रस्तुति, while ख़ुद emphasizes the doer. In the second, अपने आप describes an event occurring without external intervention; there need not be a human antecedent. The agreement and controller rules for the possessive are developed under reflexive अपना.
A dialogue: relationship and number
रिया: क्या तुम दोनों ने सजावट ख़ुद की? अमन: हाँ, हमने ख़ुद की। सर: और यह मंच? अमन: सर, आपने वह स्वयं तैयार करवाया था।
riyā: kyā tum donoṃ ne sajāvaṭ xud kī? aman: hā̃, hamne xud kī. sar: aur yah mañc? aman: sar, āpne vah svayaṃ taiyār karvāyā thā.
Riya: Did you two do the decorating yourselves? Aman: Yes, we did it ourselves. Sir: And this stage? Aman: Sir, you personally had that prepared. (familiar plural, then respectful)
तुम दोनों ने receives the reply हमने. When Aman addresses the teacher as आप, respectful reference appears in आपने. The choice of formal स्वयं fits the respectful shift, but it does not cause the honorific grammar.
Demonstratives remain separate: यह/वह are singular and ये/वे plural in careful direct-form usage, though singular ये/वो is widespread (informal). A reflexive never replaces those third-person forms. Similarly, तू is not a universal “you”; use it only in an established intimate or deliberately marked relationship.
Common Mistakes
Using a personal object pronoun as “myself”
❌ मैंने मुझे आईने में देखा।
Incorrect — मुझे is an ordinary first-person object, not the local reflexive object.
✅ मैंने ख़ुद को आईने में देखा।
maĩne xud ko āīne meṃ dekhā.
I saw myself in the mirror.
Joining the case marker to the reflexive
❌ वह ख़ुदको दोष दे रहा है।
Incorrect spelling — को follows ख़ुद as a separate word.
✅ वह ख़ुद को दोष दे रहा है।
vah xud ko doṣ de rahā hai.
He is blaming himself.
Letting ख़ुद replace possessive agreement
❌ मीरा ने ख़ुद किताब मेज़ पर रखी।
Incorrect for the intended meaning “Meera put her own book on the table”; ख़ुद alone marks emphasis, not possession.
✅ मीरा ने अपनी किताब ख़ुद मेज़ पर रखी।
mīrā ne apnī kitāb xud mez par rakhī.
Meera put her own book on the table herself.
Forgetting honorific agreement around an invariant reflexive
❌ आप यह काम स्वयं कर सकता है।
Incorrect — स्वयं is invariant, but subject आप still requires plural/honorific agreement.
✅ आप यह काम स्वयं कर सकते हैं।
āp yah kām svayaṃ kar sakte haiṃ.
You can do this work yourself. (formal/respectful, to a man)
Key Takeaways
- ख़ुद is everyday and neutral; स्वयं is formal and Sanskritic.
- Both are invariant and can refer back to any person, number, or gender.
- Add separate case markers for reflexive arguments: ख़ुद को, स्वयं से, ख़ुद पर.
- Use अपना for reflexive possession and अपने आप for “by oneself/automatically.”
- Agreement remains controlled by the antecedent and clause, including plural/honorific agreement with आप or respectful वे.
