Indian digit grouping uses the same decimal place values as international grouping, but it places commas differently after the thousands. Starting from the right, keep the final three digits together; then group the remaining digits in pairs: 12,34,56,789. Those groups line up with करोड़, लाख, हज़ार, and the final hundreds block.
Commas do not change the value. 12,34,567 and internationally grouped 1,234,567 contain the same digits and denote the same number. The first display, however, makes the natural Hindi reading बारह लाख चौंतीस हज़ार पाँच सौ सड़सठ immediately visible.
The right-to-left grouping rule
Apply one mechanical rule:
- From the right edge, take three digits: the hundreds block.
- Moving left, take pairs of digits: thousands, lakhs, crores, then higher Indian scales.
- Put a comma between the groups.
| Digits | Indian grouping | Read in Hindi |
|---|---|---|
The first comma from the right is three places in: …,789. Every earlier comma is two places farther left: …56,789, …34,56,789, 12,34,56,789.
बिल की कुल राशि ₹१,२४,७५० है।
bil kī kul rāśi ek lākh caubīs hazār sāt sau pacās hai.
The bill’s total is ₹124,750.
नई योजना का बजट ₹12,34,00,000 रखा गया है।
naī yojnā kā bajaṭ bārah karoṛ cauntīs lākh rupaye rakhā gayā hai.
The new program’s budget has been set at ₹123,400,000.
Indian and international displays compared
Up to 9,999, both systems look the same. At one hundred thousand, they diverge:
| Value | Indian display | International display | Hindi reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| one hundred thousand | 1,00,000 | 100,000 | एक लाख |
| one million | 10,00,000 | 1,000,000 | दस लाख |
| ten million | 1,00,00,000 | 10,000,000 | एक करोड़ |
| one hundred million | 10,00,00,000 | 100,000,000 | दस करोड़ |
An international display is not wrong in Hindi material. Scientific publications, multinational companies, software interfaces, and imported datasets often retain international grouping (technical/business). The key is consistency and correct interpretation. Do not mechanically call every first left-hand group “crore”; identify its place value from the full string.
रिपोर्ट में 2,500,000 लिखा है; भारतीय पद्धति में यह 25,00,000 यानी पच्चीस लाख है।
riporṭ meṃ paccīs lākh likhā hai; bhāratīya paddhati meṃ yah paccīs lākh yānī paccīs lākh hai.
The report shows 2,500,000; in Indian notation that is 25,00,000, namely twenty-five lakh.
The printed international string in that example is still naturally read in Hindi as पच्चीस लाख. The romanization gives the spoken Hindi value rather than spelling out punctuation.
Map each group to a scale
For 7,05,09,042, label the groups from right to left:
| Group | Scale | Spoken part |
|---|---|---|
| 042 | ones/hundreds block | बयालीस |
| 09 | thousand | नौ हज़ार |
| 05 | lakh | पाँच लाख |
| 7 | crore | सात करोड़ |
Read it सात करोड़ पाँच लाख नौ हज़ार बयालीस. Zero padding keeps the written groups aligned, but Hindi omits zero-valued subparts: the final 042 is simply बयालीस, not “zero hundred forty-two.”
कंपनी की वार्षिक बिक्री सात करोड़ पाँच लाख नौ हज़ार बयालीस रुपये रही।
kampanī kī vārṣik bikrī sāt karoṛ pā̃c lākh nau hazār bayālīs rupaye rahī.
The company’s annual sales were 70,509,042 rupees.
Digits, Devanagari digits, and decimal points
The grouping rule is independent of the digit shapes:
- 3,45,678 and ३,४५,६७८ both read तीन लाख पैंतालीस हज़ार छह सौ अठहत्तर.
- 80,00,000 and ८०,००,००० both read अस्सी लाख.
- Mixed digit sets inside one numeral are poor typography; choose one set consistently.
पुरानी फ़ाइल में ३,४५,६७८ लिखा है, लेकिन नई फ़ाइल में वही संख्या 3,45,678 है।
purānī fāil meṃ tīn lākh paintālīs hazār chah sau aṭhahattar likhā hai, lekin naī fāil meṃ vahī saṅkhyā tīn lākh paintālīs hazār chah sau aṭhahattar hai.
The old file shows ३,४५,६७८, while the new file shows the same number as 3,45,678.
In contemporary Indian numeric practice, a period generally separates the fractional part: ₹1,250.50 is एक हज़ार दो सौ पचास रुपये पचास पैसे. The comma is a grouping mark, not a decimal separator. Imported European formatting may use these marks differently, so financial data should state its convention explicitly.
खाते में ₹9,876.50 बचे हैं।
khāte meṃ nau hazār āṭh sau chihattar rupaye pacās paise bace haiṃ.
₹9,876.50 remains in the account.
Years, dates, phone numbers, and codes
Do not insert quantity-grouping commas into ordinary four-digit years: 2026, not 2,026, when it is a calendar year. Dates use separators to divide day, month, and year, not scale groups. A printed 12/10/2026 in Indian day-month-year order means 12 October 2026, not December 10.
Phone numbers, identity numbers, and account numbers follow institution-specific visual groupings. Their spaces or hyphens help people copy the code; they do not create लाख or करोड़ phrases. Such identifiers are commonly read digit by digit.
फ़ॉर्म पर तारीख़ १२/१०/२०२६ लिखी है, राशि १२,१०,०२६ नहीं।
form par tārīx bārah aktūbar do hazār chabbīs likhī hai, rāśi bārah lākh das hazār chabbīs nahīṃ.
The form shows the date 12/10/2026, not the amount 12,10,026.
The sentence deliberately contrasts slash-separated date structure with comma-separated quantity structure. For a complete account of year reading, see dates, years, and centuries.
Grammar after a grouped numeral
Punctuation has no effect on agreement or case. The numeral phrase counts a noun in exactly the same way whether printed in digits or words. An exact scale word remains bare, and a following postposition makes the counted noun oblique plural where its paradigm requires it.
नगर निगम ने १,२०,००० परिवारों को पानी के नए कनेक्शन दिए।
nagar nigam ne ek lākh bīs hazār parivāroṃ ko pānī ke nae kanekśan die.
The municipal corporation gave new water connections to 120,000 families.
Here परिवारों is oblique plural because of को; the written commas and the words एक लाख बीस हज़ार do not take case endings.
Common Mistakes
❌ दस लाख को 1,00,000 लिखना
Incorrect — 1,00,000 is one lakh; ten lakh is 10,00,000.
✅ दस लाख को 10,00,000 लिखना
das lākh ko das lākh likhnā.
Write ten lakh as 10,00,000.
❌ 12345678 को 1,234,5,678 लिखना
Incorrect — after the rightmost three digits, all groups to the left must contain two digits.
✅ 12345678 को 1,23,45,678 लिखना
ek karoṛ teīs lākh paintālīs hazār chah sau aṭhahattar ko ek karoṛ teīs lākh paintālīs hazār chah sau aṭhahattar likhnā.
Write 12345678 as 1,23,45,678: one crore twenty-three lakh forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
❌ ₹2,50,000 को दो करोड़ पचास हज़ार पढ़ना
Incorrect — the leftmost group is lakh here, not crore.
✅ ₹2,50,000 को दो लाख पचास हज़ार पढ़ना
do lākh pacās hazār ko do lākh pacās hazār paṛhnā.
Read ₹2,50,000 as two lakh fifty thousand.
❌ वर्ष 2,026 में चुनाव हुआ।
Incorrect style — a calendar year is normally written without a grouping comma.
✅ वर्ष 2026 में चुनाव हुआ।
varṣ do hazār chabbīs meṃ cunāv huā.
The election took place in the year 2026.
Key Takeaways
Group from the right: three digits first, then pairs. The resulting places are the final hundreds block, हज़ार, लाख, करोड़, and higher scales. Indian and international comma patterns can represent the same value, but only the Indian pattern visually matches Hindi scale words. Omit zero blocks in speech, keep years and identifiers out of ordinary quantity grouping, and let the following noun—not the commas—carry number and case grammar.
