Large Hindi numbers combine familiar lexical cardinals with four central scale words: सौ hundred, हज़ार thousand, लाख one hundred thousand, and करोड़ ten million. Hindi does not normally reorganize these into English millions and billions. A speaker sees 25,00,000 and says पच्चीस लाख, literally “twenty-five lakh,” not an improvised translation from 2.5 million.
The scale words remain unchanged after exact multipliers: दो सौ, तीन हज़ार, चार लाख, पाँच करोड़. With approximate meanings, however, हज़ारों, लाखों, and करोड़ों mean “thousands, lakhs/hundreds of thousands, and crores/tens of millions.” The Indian digit-grouping page shows how written comma groups align with these spoken units.
The four essential scales
| Value | Indian digits | Hindi | International equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | १०० | एक सौ / सौ (ek sau / sau) | one hundred |
| 1,000 | १,००० | एक हज़ार (ek hazār) | one thousand |
| 1,00,000 | १,००,००० | एक लाख (ek lākh) | one hundred thousand |
| 1,00,00,000 | १,००,००,००० | एक करोड़ (ek karoṛ) | ten million |
At 100, both सौ and एक सौ are standard. Before हज़ार, लाख, and करोड़, the multiplier एक is normally expressed when precision matters. हज़ार has a dotted ज़ in standard spelling; करोड़ ends in ड़, romanized ṛ, not plain ड.
इस हॉल में सौ लोग बैठ सकते हैं।
is hol meṃ sau log baiṭh sakte haiṃ.
One hundred people can sit in this hall.
कंपनी ने इस साल एक करोड़ रुपये निवेश किए।
kampanī ne is sāl ek karoṛ rupaye niveś kie.
The company invested one crore rupees this year.
Building an exact large number
Read from the largest nonzero scale downward. Within each scale, use the ordinary cardinal before the unit. Do not insert और between every block in neutral number reading.
इस मशीन की कीमत दो लाख पंद्रह हज़ार चार सौ रुपये है।
is maśīn kī kīmat do lākh pandrah hazār cār sau rupaye hai.
This machine costs 215,400 rupees.
ज़िले की आबादी बारह लाख चौंतीस हज़ार पाँच सौ सड़सठ है।
zile kī ābādī bārah lākh cauntīs hazār pā̃c sau saṛsaṭh hai.
The district’s population is 1,234,567.
The second numeral is grouped 12,34,567: बारह लाख + चौंतीस हज़ार + पाँच सौ + सड़सठ. A zero block is simply omitted:
ठेके की कुल राशि पाँच लाख छह सौ आठ रुपये है।
ṭheke kī kul rāśi pā̃c lākh chah sau āṭh rupaye hai.
The contract’s total amount is 500,608 rupees.
There is no हज़ार block because the thousands are zero. In formal financial writing, digits and words are often both supplied to prevent ambiguity: ₹5,00,608 (पाँच लाख छह सौ आठ रुपये).
Exact multipliers do not take plural endings
After a precise cardinal, use the bare scale form: दो सौ, not दो सौओं; तीन हज़ार, not तीन हज़ारों; सात लाख, not सात लाखों. The exact multiplier already gives the quantity.
हमने तीन हज़ार पौधे लगाए।
hamne tīn hazār paudhe lagāe.
We planted three thousand saplings.
इस योजना से सात लाख परिवारों को लाभ मिलेगा।
is yojnā se sāt lākh parivāroṃ ko lābh milegā.
Seven lakh families will benefit from this program.
Notice where case appears. In सात लाख परिवारों को, the scale expression remains bare, while count noun परिवार takes oblique plural परिवारों before को. The whole phrase is a dative argument, but the cardinal and exact लाख do not decline.
Measure nouns can remain in their conventional counting form too: दो लाख रुपये, पाँच हज़ार किलो अनाज. Hindi does not add English of between the scale, unit, and substance.
गोदाम में पच्चीस हज़ार किलो गेहूँ रखा है।
godām meṃ paccīs hazār kilo gehū̃ rakhā hai.
Twenty-five thousand kilos of wheat is stored in the warehouse.
Here the measured mass is construed as one stored quantity, so singular masculine रखा है is natural. Counting separate sacks would produce plural agreement: पच्चीस हज़ार बोरे रखे हैं.
Approximate हजारों, लाखों, करोड़ों
When there is no exact multiplier, plural -ओं creates an indefinite large amount: हज़ारों दर्शक “thousands of spectators,” लाखों लोग “hundreds of thousands / lakhs of people,” करोड़ों रुपये “tens of millions / crores of rupees.” This is not an alternative plural for an exact expression.
मैच देखने हज़ारों दर्शक स्टेडियम पहुँचे।
maic dekhne hazāroṃ darśak sṭeḍiyam pahũce.
Thousands of spectators reached the stadium to watch the match.
बाढ़ से लाखों लोगों की रोज़ी-रोटी प्रभावित हुई।
bāṛh se lākhoṃ logoṃ kī rozī-roṭī prabhāvit huī.
The livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people were affected by the flood.
English uses an explicit of in millions of people. Hindi does not insert का: लाखों लोग, not लाखों के लोग. The approximate scale form already links directly to the noun.
Converting million and billion carefully
International English and Indian Hindi divide the same digit string at different powers of ten:
| International expression | Hindi expression |
|---|---|
| 1 million (1,000,000) | दस लाख (10,00,000) |
| 10 million (10,000,000) | एक करोड़ (1,00,00,000) |
| 100 million (100,000,000) | दस करोड़ (10,00,00,000) |
| 1 billion (1,000,000,000) | एक अरब / सौ करोड़ (1,00,00,00,000) |
अरब belongs to the extended Indian system and is included only to make the billion conversion explicit. The productive focus here is through करोड़. In corporate and technical Hindi, speakers may also use English-derived मिलियन or बिलियन, especially when reading an internationally formatted report; those are (technical/business) alternatives, not reasons to reinterpret लाख or करोड़.
ऐप को दस लाख से अधिक बार डाउनलोड किया गया।
aip ko das lākh se adhik bār ḍāunloḍ kiyā gayā.
The app was downloaded more than one million times.
Dates, years, and identification numbers
A year is normally read as a complete cardinal or in established year-reading patterns, not as an amount of rupees. It is not comma-grouped: write 2026, not 2,026, for the year. Phone numbers, account numbers, and codes are identifiers and may be read digit by digit rather than through हज़ार or लाख.
यह रिपोर्ट वर्ष दो हज़ार छब्बीस के आँकड़ों पर आधारित है।
yah riporṭ varṣ do hazār chabbīs ke ā̃kaṛoṃ par ādhārit hai.
This report is based on data from the year 2026. (formal)
Common Mistakes
❌ बजट पाँच लाखों रुपये है।
Incorrect — exact पाँच requires bare लाख, not approximate plural लाखों.
✅ बजट पाँच लाख रुपये है।
bajaṭ pā̃c lākh rupaye hai.
The budget is five lakh rupees.
❌ एक मिलियन एक लाख होता है।
Incorrect — one million equals ten lakh, not one lakh.
✅ एक मिलियन दस लाख होता है।
ek miliyan das lākh hotā hai.
One million is ten lakh.
❌ सरकार ने करोड़ों के रुपये खर्च किए।
Incorrect — the approximate scale directly modifies रुपये; no के is needed.
✅ सरकार ने करोड़ों रुपये खर्च किए।
sarkār ne karoṛoṃ rupaye xarc kie.
The government spent crores of rupees.
❌ यह मकान दो करोड़ पाँच लाखों का है।
Incorrect — both exact scale units stay bare.
✅ यह मकान दो करोड़ पाँच लाख का है।
yah makān do karoṛ pā̃c lākh kā hai.
This house costs two crore five lakh rupees.
Key Takeaways
Build exact values from large to small with invariable सौ, हज़ार, लाख, and करोड़. Use bare scale words after an exact multiplier, but हज़ारों, लाखों, and करोड़ों for an unspecified large amount. One lakh is 100,000; one crore is 10,000,000; one million is ten lakh. Case marking normally appears on the counted noun, and zero-valued blocks disappear from the spoken number.
