Hindi calendar expressions combine familiar cardinals with a few conventions that differ sharply from English. A day of the month is normally a cardinal—तेरह अक्टूबर, literally “thirteen October”—not an ordinal like English October thirteenth. Years have conventional spoken groupings, decades use दशक, and centuries use agreeing ordinals before feminine सदी / शताब्दी.
Dates are also a practical safety issue. A form such as 04/05/2026 can mean 4 May or April 5 under different international conventions. Hindi normally follows day–month–year order, but spelling out the month is the clearest choice whenever readers may use another system.
Days of the month use cardinals
Ask आज कितनी तारीख़ है? “What is today’s date?” An answer can omit the copula in a short conversational reply or include है in a full sentence.
आज कितनी तारीख़ है? — आज तेरह अक्टूबर है।
āj kitnī tārīx hai? — āj terah aktūbar hai.
What is today’s date? — Today is October 13.
मेरी नियुक्ति 18 नवंबर को सुबह दस बजे है।
merī niyukti aṭhārah navambar ko subah das baje hai.
My appointment is on November 18 at ten in the morning.
The event date usually takes को: अठारह नवंबर को “on November 18.” In the copular identification आज तेरह अक्टूबर है, no को appears because the date is the predicate, not an adverbial event time.
Hindi month names in common modern spelling are जनवरी, फ़रवरी, मार्च, अप्रैल, मई, जून, जुलाई, अगस्त, सितंबर, अक्टूबर, नवंबर, and दिसंबर. Alternative spellings without the nukta, especially फरवरी, occur widely, but this guide keeps फ़रवरी.
फ़ॉर्म जमा करने की आख़िरी तारीख़ 31 जनवरी है।
form jamā karne kī āxirī tārīx ikattīs janvarī hai.
The final date for submitting the form is January 31.
For more on why तेरहवाँ अक्टूबर is not an ordinary date, see ordinal numbers.
Writing dates clearly
Common Indian numeric order is DD/MM/YYYY. Thus 04/05/2026 is normally 4 May 2026, but a North American reader may interpret it as April 5. In international correspondence, write 4 मई 2026 or use the ISO form 2026-05-04.
कृपया तारीख़ 04/05/2026 के बजाय 4 मई 2026 लिखें।
kripayā tārīx cār mai do hazār chabbīs ke bajāy cār mai do hazār chabbīs likheṃ.
Please write the date as 4 May 2026 instead of 04/05/2026.
The two strings denote the same intended date here; the second removes ordering ambiguity. Native Devanagari digits—४ मई २०२६—are valid, especially in Hindi-medium and ceremonial contexts, but international Arabic digits dominate many tickets, forms, and screens.
Reading years
Years are cardinal numbers, but their spoken packaging is conventional. Years in the 1900s are very often read as उन्नीस सौ + remainder. Years from 2000 onward commonly use दो हज़ार + remainder.
| Year | Common reading |
|---|---|
| 1947 | उन्नीस सौ सैंतालीस |
| 1984 | उन्नीस सौ चौरासी |
| 2000 | दो हज़ार |
| 2005 | दो हज़ार पाँच |
| 2026 | दो हज़ार छब्बीस |
भारत 1947 में स्वतंत्र हुआ।
bhārat unnīs sau saĩtālīs meṃ svatantr huā.
India became independent in 1947.
यह पुल 2005 में खुला था।
yah pul do hazār pā̃c meṃ khulā thā.
This bridge opened in 2005.
नई योजना 2026 से लागू होगी।
naī yojnā do hazār chabbīs se lāgū hogī.
The new plan will take effect from 2026.
The postposition determines the relation: में locates an event within a year, से marks a starting year, and तक marks an ending year. A bare year also appears in headings and date strings.
Do not insert number-grouping commas into an ordinary four-digit year. 2026 is a calendar label, not a quantity normally written 2,026 or 2,026वाँ. If a historical timespan reaches true large-number scale, Hindi returns to its ordinary number system: 1,00,000 वर्ष पहले “one lakh years ago” equals internationally grouped 100,000 years ago.
Complete dates and ranges
The usual written sequence is day + month + year. In an event phrase, को follows the whole date, not each component.
सम्मेलन 12 मार्च 2027 को शुरू होगा।
sammelan bārah mārc do hazār sattāīs ko śurū hogā.
The conference will begin on March 12, 2027.
कार्यालय 24 दिसंबर से 2 जनवरी तक बंद रहेगा।
kāryālay caubīs disambar se do janvarī tak band rahegā.
The office will remain closed from December 24 through January 2.
टिकट पर यात्रा की तारीख़ 07-08-2026 छपी है; एजेंट ने बताया कि इसका मतलब 7 अगस्त है।
ṭikaṭ par yātrā kī tārīx sāt agast do hazār chabbīs chapī hai; ejeṇṭ ne batāyā ki iskā matlab sāt agast hai.
The travel date 07-08-2026 is printed on the ticket; the agent explained that it means August 7.
In a range, से ... तक surrounds the endpoints. If the year is shared and already clear, it need not be repeated after both dates.
Decades are periods, not English-style plural numbers
Use दशक “decade.” A decade can be named with its starting year—1990 का दशक—or, especially for the twentieth century, with the relevant tens expression—नब्बे का दशक “the nineties.” The surrounding context supplies the century when the shorter label could be ambiguous.
नब्बे के दशक में इंटरनेट तेज़ी से फैला।
nabbe ke daśak meṃ iṇṭarneṭ tezī se phailā.
The internet spread rapidly in the 1990s.
2010 का दशक स्मार्टफ़ोन के तेज़ प्रसार के लिए याद किया जाएगा।
do hazār das kā daśak smārṭfon ke tez prasār ke lie yād kiyā jāegā.
The 2010s will be remembered for the rapid spread of smartphones.
Hindi does not form a decade by adding a plural suffix equivalent to English -s. 1990s is not read as a pluralized “nineteen ninety”; it is conceptualized as नब्बे का दशक or 1990 का दशक.
Centuries take agreeing ordinals
Because सदी and शताब्दी are feminine nouns, their ordinal modifiers take the feminine form: इक्कीसवीं सदी, बीसवीं शताब्दी. शताब्दी is somewhat more (formal/academic); सदी is neutral and very common.
हम इक्कीसवीं सदी के तीसरे दशक में हैं।
ham ikkīsvīṃ sadī ke tīsre daśak meṃ haiṃ.
We are in the third decade of the twenty-first century.
यह आंदोलन बीसवीं शताब्दी के आरंभ में उभरा।
yah āndolan bīsvīṃ śatābdī ke ārambh meṃ ubhrā.
This movement emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century. (academic)
सम्राट अशोक तीसरी सदी ईसा पूर्व में जीवित थे।
samrāṭ aśok tīsrī sadī īsā pūrv meṃ jīvit the.
Emperor Ashoka lived in the third century BCE.
ईसा पूर्व marks BCE; ईस्वी can mark CE/AD in formal historical dating. The respectful plural agreement थे with सम्राट अशोक reflects honorific reference, not a plural emperor.
Formal and literary date styles
Official notices may use दिनांक “dated/date” and compact digit strings. दिनांक is (formal) and common in administrative writing; everyday speakers normally say तारीख़. Historical and literary prose may use era names or regnal calendars, but those require domain-specific interpretation rather than a new cardinal grammar.
आवेदन दिनांक 15 फ़रवरी 2027 तक स्वीकार किए जाएँगे।
āvedan dināṅk pandrah farvarī do hazār sattāīs tak svīkār kie jāẽge.
Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2027. (formal)
The date follows दिनांक directly. The deadline uses तक, while को would mark a single event occurring on that day.
Common Mistakes
❌ बैठक तेरहवें अक्टूबर को है।

✅ बैठक तेरह अक्टूबर को है।
baiṭhak terah aktūbar ko hai.
The meeting is on October 13.
❌ उसका जन्म 1998 को हुआ।
Incorrect — a year containing an event normally takes में.
✅ उसका जन्म 1998 में हुआ।
uskā janm unnīs sau aṭṭhānve meṃ huā.
He/She was born in 1998.
❌ यह बदलाव इक्कीसवाँ सदी में हुआ।
Incorrect — feminine सदी requires the feminine ordinal इक्कीसवीं.
✅ यह बदलाव इक्कीसवीं सदी में हुआ।
yah badlāv ikkīsvīṃ sadī meṃ huā.
This change occurred in the twenty-first century.
❌ 04/05/2026 हर देश में 4 मई ही समझा जाएगा।
Incorrect — slash-only dates are interpreted differently across countries.
✅ अंतरराष्ट्रीय ईमेल में 4 मई 2026 लिखना अधिक स्पष्ट है।
antarrāṣṭrīy īmel meṃ cār mai do hazār chabbīs likhnā adhik spaṣṭ hai.
Writing 4 May 2026 in an international email is clearer.
