नहीं across habitual progressive and perfective

Hindi places नहीं before the aspectual predicate, but habitual, progressive, and perfective predicates do not all behave alike after it. A present habitual often drops its final present auxiliary: वह रोज़ नहीं आता. A neutral progressive normally keeps it: वह अभी नहीं आ रहा है. A simple perfective needs no present auxiliary in either polarity: वह कल नहीं आया.

English uses doesn't, isn't, and didn't to make comparable contrasts. Hindi expresses them through participles, auxiliaries, and agreement. Negation does not flatten those aspectual differences.

The three core patterns

ViewpointAffirmativeNegativeTypical meaning
habitualवह आती हैवह नहीं आती (है)she does not habitually come
progressiveवह आ रही हैवह नहीं आ रही हैshe is not coming now
simple perfectiveवह आईवह नहीं आईshe did not come

The parentheses around habitual है mark genuine optionality in many present negative habituals. They do not apply automatically to the progressive.

💡
Read from right to left: first identify the aspectual shape—आती, आ रही है, or आई—then place नहीं before that whole predicate. Do not rebuild every negative from English not.

Habitual: auxiliary omission is common

An affirmative present habitual normally uses an agreeing habitual participle plus हूँ/हो/है/हैं.

रोहन हर शुक्रवार को अपनी दादी से मिलता है।

rohan har śukravār ko apnī dādī se miltā hai.

Rohan meets his grandmother every Friday.

Under negation, the present auxiliary is commonly absent:

रोहन हर शुक्रवार को अपनी दादी से नहीं मिलता।

rohan har śukravār ko apnī dādī se nahīṃ miltā.

Rohan does not meet his grandmother every Friday.

The full नहीं मिलता है is also grammatical. Omission is not a careless shortening; negative present habituals conventionally allow it. Agreement remains on मिलता.

दोनों बहनें अकेले बाज़ार नहीं जातीं।

donoṃ bahneṃ akele bāzār nahīṃ jātīṃ.

The two sisters do not go to the market alone.

When feminine plural जाती हैं loses हैं, the standalone habitual is written जातीं. Retaining the auxiliary gives नहीं जाती हैं, without nasalization on जाती.

The habitual describes a routine, disposition, or repeated situation; it does not necessarily deny every single occurrence. वह रोज़ दफ़्तर नहीं जाता often means “He does not go to the office every day,” perhaps because he works elsewhere on some days.

Progressive: retain the auxiliary in the neutral full form

The progressive consists of the lexical stem plus agreeing रहा/रही/रहे and a finite auxiliary. Neutral negation keeps those layers.

नंदिता अभी दोपहर का खाना बना रही है।

nanditā abhī dopahar kā khānā banā rahī hai.

Nandita is cooking lunch right now.

नंदिता अभी दोपहर का खाना नहीं बना रही है।

nanditā abhī dopahar kā khānā nahīṃ banā rahī hai.

Nandita is not cooking lunch right now.

हम आज मुख्य सड़क से नहीं जा रहे हैं।

ham āj mukhya saṛak se nahīṃ jā rahe haiṃ.

We are not going by the main road today. (male or mixed group)

The participle carries gender-number agreement; the auxiliary carries person-number and time anchoring. Everyday answers such as मैं नहीं आ रहा are natural (informal) when speaker and present time are obvious, but they are context-supported ellipsis. They are not the full paradigm.

💡
Habitual नहीं जाता is an ordinary complete present pattern; progressive नहीं जा रहा is chiefly a conversationally recoverable short form. For a neutral full progressive, keep हूँ/हो/है/हैं.

Simple perfective: negate the bounded event

A simple perfective presents an event as a whole. नहीं precedes the perfective form, which keeps its normal agreement.

आयशा बैठक के बाद सीधे घर गई।

āyśā baiṭhak ke bād sīdhe ghar gaī.

Ayesha went straight home after the meeting.

आयशा बैठक के बाद सीधे घर नहीं गई।

āyśā baiṭhak ke bād sīdhe ghar nahīṃ gaī.

Ayesha did not go straight home after the meeting.

The negative can deny the destination or the directness, depending on contrast. It does not change feminine गई.

With a canonical transitive perfective, ने also remains:

विवेक ने अंतिम रिपोर्ट नहीं भेजी।

vivek ne antim riporṭ nahīṃ bhejī.

Vivek did not send the final report.

Feminine unmarked रिपोर्ट controls भेजी. The full conditions for perfective agreement are taught under transitive perfectives with ने; the key point here is that negation does not remove ने or reset agreement.

प्रबंधक ने किसी कर्मचारी को नहीं बुलाया।

prabandhak ne kisī karmacārī ko nahīṃ bulāyā.

The manager did not call any employee.

Because the object is marked by को, the perfective appears in default masculine singular बुलाया. Again, that agreement result belongs to the perfective construction, not to नहीं itself.

Simple perfective versus present perfect

Adding a present auxiliary creates a present-perfect perspective and the negative normally retains it.

मैंने आज सुबह नाश्ता नहीं किया।

maĩne āj subah nāśtā nahīṃ kiyā.

I did not eat breakfast this morning.

मैंने अभी तक नाश्ता नहीं किया है।

maĩne abhī tak nāśtā nahīṃ kiyā hai.

I have not eaten breakfast yet.

The first locates a completed non-event in a past period. The second connects the absence of eating to the present endpoint अभी तक. Deleting है from the second removes the overt present-perfect layer and can shift the reading toward a simple past.

English learners sometimes assume that a negative event has no aspect because “nothing happened.” Hindi still chooses a viewpoint on the relevant time interval: a denied bounded event, an unfulfilled event up to now, an absent ongoing phase, or a missing routine.

Past habitual and past progressive keep the past auxiliary

Present habitual omission must not spread to था/थी/थे/थीं, which anchors a past routine.

बचपन में नीलम रात को देर तक नहीं जागती थी।

bacpan meṃ nīlam rāt ko der tak nahīṃ jāgtī thī.

As a child, Neelam did not use to stay awake late at night.

The past progressive likewise retains its auxiliary:

जब मैं पहुँचा, कर्मचारी मशीन नहीं चला रहे थे।

jab maĩ pahũcā, karmacārī maśīn nahīṃ calā rahe the.

When I arrived, the employees were not operating the machine. (male or mixed group)

Removing थी/थे would lose explicit past anchoring. The surrounding जब clause may help listeners infer time, but careful prose still uses the past auxiliary to state it.

Time adverbs and the scope of negation

Compare a denied routine with “never”:

लीना रोज़ पुस्तकालय नहीं जाती; वह हफ़्ते में तीन दिन जाती है।

līnā roz pustakālay nahīṃ jātī; vah hafte meṃ tīn din jātī hai.

Leena does not go to the library every day; she goes three days a week.

लीना परीक्षा के दिनों में कभी पुस्तकालय नहीं जाती।

līnā parīkṣā ke dinoṃ meṃ kabhī pustakālay nahīṃ jātī.

Leena never goes to the library during exam periods.

रोज़ … नहीं naturally allows “not every day,” while कभी … नहीं explicitly means “never.” Aspect tells us whether the situation is habitual, progressive, or bounded; adverbs and focus determine which part of that situation falls under negation.

Polite and direct dialogue turns

तुम अभी निकल रहे हो? — नहीं, मैं अभी नहीं निकल रहा हूँ; पहले यह ईमेल भेजूँगा।

tum abhī nikal rahe ho? — nahīṃ, maĩ abhī nahīṃ nikal rahā hū̃; pahle yah īmel bhejū̃gā.

Are you leaving now? — No, I'm not leaving yet; I'll send this email first. (familiar, male speaker)

क्या आपने दस्तावेज़ जमा नहीं किए हैं? — जी, अभी तक नहीं किए हैं; अंतिम हस्ताक्षर बाकी हैं।

kyā āpne dastāvez jamā nahīṃ kie haiṃ? — jī, abhī tak nahīṃ kie haiṃ; antim hastākṣar bākī haiṃ.

Haven't you submitted the documents? — That's right, I haven't submitted them yet; the final signatures are still pending. (respectful)

The second answer omits the repeated object but retains present-perfect किए हैं. A negative question can check an expectation; its aspectual structure is the same as in a statement.

नहीं is not interchangeable with मत or न

फ़ाइल अभी मत भेजिए; मैं संशोधित प्रति भेज रहा हूँ।

fāil abhī mat bhejie; maĩ saṃśodhit prati bhej rahā hū̃.

Please don't send the file yet; I am sending a revised copy. (respectful)

मत भेजिए is a negative imperative, not a negative perfective. After the deadline, the factual report would be आपने फ़ाइल नहीं भेजी. Subordinate न appears in patterns such as ताकि फ़ाइल ग़लत पते पर न जाए. The three particles have overlapping negative meaning but different syntactic distributions.

Common Mistakes

❌ कविता हर दिन बस से नहीं जाती है था।

Incorrect—present and past auxiliaries cannot be stacked; a past habitual needs only थी.

✅ कविता पहले हर दिन बस से नहीं जाती थी।

kavitā pahle har din bas se nahīṃ jātī thī.

Kavita did not use to take the bus every day.

❌ लड़के मैदान में नहीं खेल रही हैं।

Incorrect—masculine plural लड़के requires रहे हैं in the progressive.

✅ लड़के आज मैदान में नहीं खेल रहे हैं।

laṛke āj maidān meṃ nahīṃ khel rahe haiṃ.

The boys are not playing on the field today.

❌ सुषमा ने चिट्ठी नहीं लिखी है कल।

Incorrect neutral order—the past-time adverb belongs before the predicate, and a simple past is natural for this bounded event.

✅ सुषमा ने कल वह चिट्ठी नहीं लिखी।

suṣmā ne kal vah ciṭṭhī nahīṃ likhī.

Sushma did not write that letter yesterday.

❌ दोनों महिलाएँ बैठक में नहीं आया।

Incorrect—negation does not cancel feminine plural perfective agreement.

✅ दोनों महिलाएँ बैठक में नहीं आईं।

donoṃ mahilāẽ baiṭhak meṃ nahīṃ āīṃ.

The two women did not come to the meeting.

Key Takeaways

  • नहीं precedes the aspectual predicate, but each aspect keeps its own agreement and auxiliary structure.
  • Present negative habituals commonly omit हूँ/हो/है/हैं; neutral full progressives normally retain them.
  • Simple perfectives have no present auxiliary, while present perfects normally retain है/हैं to express current relevance.
  • Past habituals and past progressives retain था/थी/थे/थीं because it supplies past anchoring.
  • Negation does not remove ने, object marking, or the agreement rules of perfective clauses.
