Hindi न तो...न ही means “neither...nor.” It presents two parallel alternatives and excludes both: न तो चाय न ही कॉफ़ी “neither tea nor coffee.” The first arm contains न तो, while the second contains न ही. This balanced pattern is common in careful conversation and especially useful in formal writing because it makes the two-way structure unmistakable.
The pieces are not two ordinary instances of नहीं. Here न participates in a paired coordinator, तो marks the first alternative as one side of a contrast, and ही helps introduce the matching exclusion. English speakers should therefore learn the whole frame rather than translating neither and nor word by word.
Building the basic pair
Put न तो immediately before the first constituent being excluded and न ही before a parallel second constituent. The paired parts can be noun phrases, adjectives, adverbs, or larger predicates.
आज कैफ़े में न तो चाय मिली न ही कॉफ़ी।
āj kaife meṃ na to cāy milī na hī kofī.
Today the café had neither tea nor coffee.
यह कमरा न तो साफ़ है न ही आरामदेह।
yah kamrā na to sāf hai na hī ārāmdeh.
This room is neither clean nor comfortable.
वह न तो जल्दी बोलती है न ही बहुत धीरे।
vah na to jaldī boltī hai na hī bahut dhīre.
She speaks neither quickly nor very slowly.
The paired constituents should be grammatically parallel. In the first example both are nouns; in the second both are predicative adjectives. English also favors parallelism after neither...nor, but Hindi makes the scope especially visible by putting each marker directly before the material it contrasts.
An affirmative coordination with और simply joins two facts. The negative pair rejects both:
अमन ने संदेश भेजा और फ़ोन भी किया।
aman ne sandeś bhejā aur fon bhī kiyā.
Aman sent a message and also called.
अमन ने न तो संदेश भेजा न ही फ़ोन किया।
aman ne na to sandeś bhejā na hī fon kiyā.
Aman neither sent a message nor called.
One shared predicate or two complete clauses
When two objects share one verb, Hindi commonly states the predicate in the first arm and leaves it understood in the second. Agreement follows the ordinary rules of that predicate; paired negation does not create special agreement.
मीरा ने न तो रोटी खाई न ही सब्ज़ी।
mīrā ne na to roṭī khāī na hī sabzī.
Mira ate neither the flatbread nor the vegetable dish.
The shared predicate can instead follow the complete pair, and speakers may repeat or supply separate predicates when that avoids ambiguity. If the alternatives have different subjects, giving each arm its own finite predicate is usually clearer:
न तो रोहन बैठक में आया न ही सना ऑनलाइन जुड़ी।
na to rohan baiṭhak meṃ āyā na hī sanā onlāin juṛī.
Neither Rohan came to the meeting nor did Sana join online.
Notice आया with masculine रोहन and जुड़ी with feminine सना. The two clauses retain their own agreement. Hindi does not invert subject and auxiliary as English does in nor did Sana.
The present copula is retained when each arm needs an ordinary nominal or adjectival predicate:
यह रास्ता न तो छोटा है न ही सुरक्षित है।
yah rāstā na to choṭā hai na hī surakṣit hai.
This route is neither short nor safe.
The second है can sometimes be omitted when the structure is short and transparent: न तो छोटा है न ही सुरक्षित. That ellipsis is a property of coordination, not a special rule that negation always deletes auxiliaries. In a perfect construction, keep the auxiliary when the perfect normally requires it:
रिपोर्ट न तो पूरी हुई है न ही अभी प्रकाशित हुई है।
riporṭ na to pūrī huī hai na hī abhī prakāśit huī hai.
The report has neither been completed nor published yet.
Scope: what exactly is excluded?
The position of the pair identifies its scope. Compare a pair over destinations with a pair over whole actions:
हम छुट्टी में न तो जयपुर गए न ही आगरा।
ham chuṭṭī meṃ na to jaypur gae na hī āgrā.
On vacation we went to neither Jaipur nor Agra.
हमने छुट्टी में न तो यात्रा की न ही घर से काम किया।
hamne chuṭṭī meṃ na to yātrā kī na hī ghar se kām kiyā.
During the vacation we neither traveled nor worked from home.
In the first, the shared event “go” is understood with two destinations. In the second, two events are denied. Moving न तो earlier can widen the contrast to an entire clause; keeping it beside a noun gives that noun narrow scope.
This is different from सब नहीं, which generally means “not all,” and कोई नहीं, which means “none / nobody.” It is also different from listing two negative facts without packaging them as alternatives:
नीलम दिल्ली में नहीं रहती और मुंबई में काम नहीं करती।
nīlam dillī meṃ nahīṃ rahtī aur mumbāī meṃ kām nahīṃ kartī.
Neelam does not live in Delhi, and she does not work in Mumbai.
That sentence makes two independent assertions with नहीं. नीलम न तो दिल्ली में रहती है न ही मुंबई में instead pairs two possible residence locations: “Neelam lives in neither Delhi nor Mumbai.” For more about how placement shapes interpretation, see नहीं and constituent scope.
न...न, ना...ना, and register
The full न तो...न ही pattern is neutral in careful speech and common in formal and academic prose. A shorter न...न appears in compact writing, proverbs, and balanced rhetorical phrases (formal/literary):
उसके जवाब में न स्पष्टता थी, न ईमानदारी।
uske javāb meṃ na spaṣṭatā thī, na īmāndārī.
His answer had neither clarity nor honesty. (formal)
In informal speech, stressed ना...ना may coordinate rejected options: ना चाय, ना कॉफ़ी “no tea, no coffee.” The spelling ना reflects its full spoken vowel and should not be confused with sentence-final ना?, the conversational confirmation particle in तुम आओगे ना? “You’ll come, right?”
The reduced patterns are useful, but न तो...न ही is the safest productive frame for learners because it explicitly labels the first and second alternatives. Do not insert और automatically before the second arm. और न ही occurs, especially when adding a further negative point, but the basic pair needs no conjunction.
Polite and direct dialogue
Paired negation itself is not polite or impolite. Pronouns, imperatives, and phrasing create the social tone.
सर, इस फ़ॉर्म पर न तो तारीख़ है न ही आपके हस्ताक्षर।
sar, is form par na to tārīx hai na hī āpke hastākṣar.
Sir, this form has neither a date nor your signature. (polite/formal)
तुमने न तो बर्तन धोए न ही कूड़ा बाहर रखा।
tumne na to bartan dhoe na hī kūṛā bāhar rakhā.
You neither washed the dishes nor put the rubbish outside. (direct/familiar)
Ordinary direct prohibitions use मत. Paired न तो...न ही can nevertheless coordinate two commands in a balanced rhetorical or formal instruction:
न तो बहस बढ़ाइए न ही बैठक छोड़कर जाइए।
na to bahas baṛhāie na hī baiṭhak choṛkar jāie.
Neither prolong the argument nor leave the meeting. (balanced formal instruction)
बहस मत बढ़ाओ और बैठक छोड़कर मत जाओ।
bahas mat baṛhāo aur baiṭhak choṛkar mat jāo.
Don’t prolong the argument, and don’t leave the meeting. (direct familiar prohibition)
The first is a coordinated rhetorical instruction and sounds more formal; the second contains two straightforward prohibitives. मत cannot replace every न inside the paired nominal construction.
Common Mistakes
Using नहीं as both halves of the coordinator
❌ मैंने नहीं चाय नहीं कॉफ़ी पी।
Incorrect neutral Hindi — repeated नहीं does not build the ‘neither...nor’ frame.
✅ मैंने न तो चाय पी न ही कॉफ़ी।
maĩne na to cāy pī na hī kofī.
I drank neither tea nor coffee.
Making the two arms structurally mismatched
❌ वह न तो दफ़्तर गई न ही घर पर।
Incorrect for the intended reading — destination गई cannot be naturally inherited by locative घर पर; use घर गई or supply a different predicate.
✅ वह न तो दफ़्तर गई न ही घर पर रुकी।
vah na to daftar gaī na hī ghar par rukī.
She neither went to the office nor stayed at home.
Treating paired न as a command marker
❌ कृपया इस बटन को न तो दबाइए।
Incorrect — न तो announces a second coordinated alternative that never arrives.
✅ कृपया इस लाल बटन को मत दबाइए।
kripyā is lāl baṭan ko mat dabāie.
Please do not press this red button. (polite)
Forgetting agreement in the two clauses
❌ न तो रोहन आई न ही सना आया।
Incorrect — the two predicates have been given the other subject’s gender agreement.
✅ न तो रोहन आया न ही सना आई।
na to rohan āyā na hī sanā āī.
Neither Rohan came nor did Sana come.
Key Takeaways
Use न तो X न ही Y to exclude two parallel alternatives. Keep shared material outside the frame, repeat predicates when separate subjects or agreement make that clearer, and retain auxiliaries according to the ordinary predicate construction. Use नहीं for independent clause negation and मत for prohibitions; neither one is a mechanical substitute for paired न.
