Adjective plus होना and करना

Hindi regularly pairs an adjective with होना or करना. Adjective + होना says that an entity is in, enters, or develops a state: कमरा साफ़ है, कमरा साफ़ हुआ. Adjective + करना adds a causer who brings an entity into that state: उन्होंने कमरा साफ़ किया. This is a productive way of expressing the English contrast between be/become and make/get something.

The pattern is broad but not mechanical. Some meanings prefer a lexical verb—दरवाज़ा खुलना/खोलना “open”—and some adjective combinations are conventional only in particular senses. The construction also interacts with adjective agreement, verbal agreement, aspect, and vector verbs.

State, change, and caused change

Present होना can be copular and static. Perfective हुआ or हो गया normally yields a change-of-state reading. करना introduces a causer and an affected entity.

सुबह तक पानी ठंडा था।

subah tak pānī ṭhaṇḍā thā.

The water was cold until morning.

खिड़की खुली तो कमरा ठंडा हो गया।

khiṛkī khulī to kamrā ṭhaṇḍā ho gayā.

When the window opened, the room became cold.

मैंने पानी बोतल में भरने से पहले ठंडा किया।

maĩne pānī botal meṃ bharne se pahle ṭhaṇḍā kiyā.

I chilled the water before pouring it into the bottle.

These three clauses describe a stable property, a transition, and a caused transition. English often uses a separate verb such as chill for the third, while Hindi can preserve the same adjective ठंडा and change the verbal head.

💡
Use a three-part diagnostic: X adjective है “X is in the state,” X adjective हुआ/हो गया “X entered the state,” and Y ने X adjective किया “Y caused X to enter the state.”

Adjective agreement is independent of light-verb choice

An adjective ending in -ा changes for the gender and number of the entity whose property it expresses. An invariable adjective such as साफ़, तैयार, बंद, or ख़ुश keeps one form. The underlying forms are reviewed under declinable adjectives in -ā.

Affected entityWith होनाWith करना
कमरा (m.sg.)कमरा ठंडा हुआकमरा ठंडा किया
चाय (f.sg.)चाय ठंडी हुईचाय ठंडी की
रास्ते (m.pl.)रास्ते चौड़े हुएरास्ते चौड़े किए
सड़कें (f.pl.)सड़कें चौड़ी हुईंसड़कें चौड़ी कीं

नगर निगम ने बाज़ार की मुख्य सड़क चौड़ी की।

nagar nigam ne bāzār kī mukhya saṛak cauṛī kī.

The municipal corporation widened the market's main road.

मरम्मत के बाद दोनों रास्ते थोड़े चौड़े हो गए।

marammat ke bād donoṃ rāste thoṛe cauṛe ho gae.

After the repairs, both routes became slightly wider.

In the first sentence, feminine सड़क is the property-holder, so adjective चौड़ी agrees with it. It is also the unmarked object of a perfective transitive clause, so करना appears as feminine की. In the second, plural रास्ते controls both चौड़े and गए.

तकनीशियन ने मशीनें पूरी तरह तैयार कीं।

taknīśiyan ne maśīneṃ pūrī tarah taiyār kīṃ.

The technician got the machines completely ready.

Here invariable तैयार does not change, but feminine plural मशीनें still controls कीं. Adjective morphology and verb morphology must therefore be checked separately.

Perfective transitivity with करना

Adjective + करना is transitive. A canonical perfective agent bears ने, and an unmarked direct object can control किया/की/किए/कीं:

सोनल ने प्रस्तुति के अक्षर बड़े किए।

sonal ne prastuti ke akṣar baṛe kie.

Sonal enlarged the text in the presentation.

रसोइए ने दाल ज़्यादा गाढ़ी नहीं की।

rasoie ne dāl zyādā gāṛhī nahīṃ kī.

The cook did not make the lentils too thick.

The negative does not alter the ergative or agreement pattern. By contrast, adjective + होना is intransitive and takes no ने: दाल गाढ़ी हुई. This contrast is more reliable than translating करना literally as “do.”

With को-marked animate undergoers, the agreement pattern can be less transparent and some combinations are lexicalized. For instance, बच्चे को तैयार किया uses invariable तैयार and default masculine singular किया because बच्चे को is marked. Do not invent adjective changes from the natural gender of a को-marked pronoun.

हुआ and हो गया are not interchangeable everywhere

Simple हुआ reports a change or resulting condition. Compound हो गया makes the attained boundary especially salient and often suggests that the development is now settled, sometimes unexpectedly.

बारिश के बाद आसमान साफ़ हुआ।

bāriś ke bād āsmān sāf huā.

The sky cleared after the rain.

दोपहर होते-होते आसमान बिल्कुल साफ़ हो गया।

dopahar hote-hote āsmān bilkul sāf ho gayā.

By afternoon, the sky had become completely clear.

The second sentence foregrounds the endpoint बिल्कुल साफ़. With a purely stable reading, however, Hindi uses a copula: आसमान साफ़ है, not automatically हो गया है. English is clean/clear does not reveal whether Hindi should present a state or a transition.

किया versus कर दिया

An adjective + करना predicate can itself take a vector. Bare साफ़ किया neutrally reports caused cleaning; साफ़ कर दिया presents a completed result, often as decisive, consequential, or made available to someone.

अजय ने मेज़ साफ़ की।

ajay ne mez sāf kī.

Ajay cleaned the table.

मेहमान आने से पहले अजय ने पूरा कमरा साफ़ कर दिया।

mehmān āne se pahle ajay ne pūrā kamrā sāf kar diyā.

Before the guests arrived, Ajay cleaned up the entire room.

This is a genuine simple-versus-compound contrast. देना does not literally mean “give the room”; it profiles a bounded result. Likewise, तैयार कर लेना can present preparation as a task secured for the agent, while तैयार कर रखना presents readiness as maintained in advance.

मैंने यात्रा के लिए दवाइयाँ अलग कर रखी हैं।

maĩne yātrā ke lie davāiyā̃ alag kar rakhī haiṃ.

I've kept the medicines set aside for the trip.

The vector रखना contributes the maintained-result reading. It is not freely replaceable by देना or लेना without changing the perspective.

💡
In an expanded predicate, the layers remain ordered: affected entity + adjective + bare कर- + inflected vector. Thus फ़ाइल तैयार कर दी, not an English-like order with the affected noun after the verb.

Lexical limits and meaning shifts

Some pairs are highly productive: गर्म होना/करना, साफ़ होना/करना, तैयार होना/करना, ख़ाली होना/करना. Others coexist with lexical causative pairs:

  • दरवाज़ा खुला / खुल गया / खोला is usually more idiomatic than treating खुला as an adjective before करना.
  • बच्चा बड़ा हुआ means “the child grew up”; बच्चे को बड़ा किया means “raised the child,” a lexicalized causative use.
  • काम अच्छा किया means “did the work well,” where अच्छा can describe manner or result; it is not always the causative of काम अच्छा हुआ.
  • बात लंबी करना means prolonging a discussion, while रस्सी लंबी करना physically lengthens a rope.

There is no perfect derivational formula. The construction supplies a compositional possibility, but established senses and collocations determine what speakers actually use.

A dialogue: state, intervention, and result

यह तस्वीर इतनी धुँधली क्यों हो गई?

yah tasvīr itnī dhũdhlī kyoṃ ho gaī?

Why has this picture become so blurry?

अपलोड करते समय आकार छोटा किया था, इसलिए गुणवत्ता कम हो गई।

aploḍ karte samay ākār choṭā kiyā thā, islie guṇvattā kam ho gaī.

I reduced the size while uploading it, so the quality went down.

मूल तस्वीर भेज दो; मैं उसे साफ़ कर दूँगा।

mūl tasvīr bhej do; maĩ use sāf kar dū̃gā.

Send the original picture; I'll clean it up. (informal)

The first speaker describes an undesirable resulting state with हो गई. The reply identifies a deliberate causation छोटा किया and a consequent intransitive change कम हो गई. The offer साफ़ कर दूँगा profiles a useful result provided to the other person.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing cause and change

❌ मैंने दूध गर्म हुआ।

Incorrect — a deliberate causer requires करना, not intransitive होना.

✅ मैंने दूध गर्म किया।

maĩne dūdh garm kiyā.

I heated the milk.

2. Adding ने to an intransitive change

❌ रात में मौसम ने ठंडा हो गया।

Incorrect — मौसम is the subject of intransitive हो गया and takes no ने.

✅ रात में मौसम ठंडा हो गया।

rāt meṃ mausam ṭhaṇḍā ho gayā.

The weather turned cold during the night.

3. Ignoring adjective agreement

❌ उन्होंने सड़क चौड़ा की।

Incorrect — declinable चौड़ा must agree with feminine सड़क.

✅ उन्होंने सड़क चौड़ी की।

unhoṃne saṛak cauṛī kī.

They widened the road.

4. Ignoring perfective object agreement

❌ कविता ने खिड़कियाँ बंद किया।

Incorrect — बंद is invariable, but feminine plural खिड़कियाँ controls कीं.

✅ कविता ने खिड़कियाँ बंद कीं।

kavitā ne khiṛkiyā̃ band kīṃ.

Kavita closed the windows.

5. Translating the vector literally

❌ उसने कमरा साफ़ दिया।

Incorrect — expanded adjective predicates require bare कर- before the vector देना.

✅ उसने शाम तक कमरा साफ़ कर दिया।

usne śām tak kamrā sāf kar diyā.

He or she cleaned up the room by evening.

Key Takeaways

  • Adjective + होना expresses a state or change; adjective + करना expresses caused change.
  • Declinable adjectives agree with the entity whose property they express, while invariable adjectives remain unchanged.
  • In a perfective transitive clause, ने marks the causer and an unmarked object can control the form of करना.
  • हो जाना, कर देना, कर लेना, and कर रखना add endpoint, affectedness, or maintained-result meanings; their vector is not literal.
  • Productivity has lexical limits: learn conventional pairs and do not replace established verbs mechanically.
