Perfective with telic and atelic predicates

Perfective aspect and lexical endpoint are related but different. A telic predicate has a built-in culmination—reaching a station, writing a particular letter, drinking a measured glass of water. An atelic predicate describes an activity or state without such an inherent endpoint—walking, talking, or reading unspecified material. Hindi perfective viewpoint can bound either type, but the resulting completion implications differ.

For the general whole-event viewpoint, see perfective aspect and bounded events. This page asks where the boundary comes from.

Telicity belongs to the whole predicate

A verb is not permanently telic or atelic. Its object, measure phrase, path, and particles help build the event description.

PredicateEvent typeLikely boundary
चलना “walk”atelic activitynone inherent
स्टेशन तक चलनाtelic patharrival at station
किताबें पढ़नाpotentially open seriescontext-dependent
वह किताब पढ़नाtelic in a completion readingend of that book
एक गिलास पानी पीनाtelic measured eventglass consumed

विवेक दो घंटे चला।

vivek do ghaṇṭe calā.

Vivek walked for two hours.

विवेक स्टेशन तक चला।

vivek sṭeśan tak calā.

Vivek walked as far as the station.

Both are perfective and bounded. The first gets its outer limit from duration but has no inherent destination. The second has a path endpoint. Perfective morphology therefore does not by itself tell you whether a predicate was lexically telic.

💡
Diagnose the whole verb phrase, not the dictionary verb. चलना is open-ended, but पुल के अंत तक चलना contains a goal and can describe a telic event.

में versus तक reveals different boundaries

With many activities, a duration plus तक measures how long the event continued. A duration plus में often measures the time needed to reach a culmination.

अनु ने दो घंटे तक उपन्यास पढ़ा।

anu ne do ghaṇṭe tak upanyās paṛhā.

Anu read the novel for two hours.

अनु ने दो घंटे में उपन्यास पढ़ लिया।

anu ne do ghaṇṭe meṃ upanyās paṛh liyā.

Anu finished reading the novel in two hours.

The lexical content remains reading the novel. तक bounds the reading interval without asserting the book’s endpoint. में, total-object interpretation, and completive लेना converge on culmination.

कर्मचारियों ने शाम तक सामान पैक किया।

karmacāriyoṃ ne śām tak sāmān paik kiyā.

The employees packed goods until evening.

कर्मचारियों ने एक घंटे में सारा सामान पैक कर दिया।

karmacāriyoṃ ne ek ghaṇṭe meṃ sārā sāmān paik kar diyā.

The employees packed all the goods in one hour.

The quantified सारा सामान and completive देना make the second endpoint explicit. The first can describe a bounded work session without claiming that everything was packed.

Perfective with atelic activities

Hindi readily uses a simple perfective for a bounded episode of an activity. English may use simple past as well, but learners sometimes overuse the Hindi progressive because the event lasted for some time. Duration does not force internal viewpoint.

मेहमान देर तक बातें करते रहे, फिर घर चले गए।

mehmān der tak bāteṃ karte rahe, phir ghar cale gae.

The guests kept talking until late, then went home.

रवि कुछ देर छत पर बैठा और हवा का आनंद लिया।

ravi kuch der chat par baiṭhā aur havā kā ānand liyā.

Ravi sat on the roof for a while and enjoyed the breeze.

बैठा packages the sitting interval as one finished narrative episode. It does not mean “sat down” unless context or a vector such as बैठ गया supplies the change-of-state reading.

Telic perfectives and culmination

With an inherent endpoint, the unmarked perfective normally presents that endpoint as reached. If only an attempt occurred, Hindi generally says so with कोशिश करना, चाहना, or another construction rather than using the plain telic perfective.

सीमा स्टेशन पहुँची और उसने तुरंत टिकट खरीदा।

sīmā sṭeśan pahũcī aur usne turant ṭikaṭ kharīdā.

Seema reached the station and immediately bought a ticket.

राज ने ताला खोला, लेकिन दरवाज़ा नहीं खोला।

rāj ne tālā kholā, lekin darvāzā nahīṃ kholā.

Raj opened the lock but did not open the door.

The two opening events have separate affected objects and possible endpoints. Hindi does not infer that opening the lock automatically culminated in opening the door.

Completive vectors such as लेना, देना, जाना, and चुकना can strengthen endpoint or result readings, but their lexical contribution varies. पढ़ लिया often means “finished reading,” while कह दिया presents saying as decisively carried out.

Aspect, tense, and agreement remain separate

Perfective viewpoint may occur as a bare past report, with present है for current relevance, or with past था for anteriority. In transitive perfectives, ने and object agreement apply regardless of whether the predicate is telic or merely temporally bounded.

निधि ने एक घंटे तक कविताएँ पढ़ीं।

nidhi ne ek ghaṇṭe tak kavitāẽ paṛhī̃.

Nidhi read poems for an hour.

निधि ने तीनों कविताएँ पढ़ ली हैं।

nidhi ne tīnoṃ kavitāẽ paṛh lī haiṃ.

Nidhi has finished reading all three poems.

Feminine plural कविताएँ controls पढ़ीं/ली, because the perfective agent bears ने and the object is unmarked. The present auxiliary in the second sentence adds current relevance; it does not create the endpoint supplied by तीनों and लेना.

💡
Keep three questions separate: Is the predicate telic? Is the speaker using perfective viewpoint? Is the result relevant now? Objects and paths answer the first, aspect answers the second, and context plus an auxiliary often answers the third.

A short narrative: activity, endpoint, result

सुबह कारीगर कई घंटे काम करते रहे।

subah kārīgar kaī ghaṇṭe kām karte rahe.

In the morning, the craftspeople kept working for several hours.

दोपहर तक उन्होंने अलमारी का ढाँचा बना लिया।

dopahar tak unhoṃne almārī kā ḍhā̃cā banā liyā.

By noon, they had completed the cabinet frame.

फिर उन्होंने दरवाज़े लगाए और अलमारी ग्राहक को भेज दी।

phir unhoṃne darvāze lagāe aur almārī grāhak ko bhej dī.

Then they fitted the doors and sent the cabinet to the customer.

Continuative करते रहे holds open an atelic work interval. ढाँचा बना लिया reaches a specified endpoint, and the following perfectives advance the narrative through further bounded steps.

Common Mistakes

❌ अनु ने रविवार को दो घंटे तक उपन्यास पढ़ी।

Incorrect — masculine उपन्यास requires पढ़ा.

✅ अनु ने रविवार को दो घंटे तक उपन्यास पढ़ा।

anu ne ravivār ko do ghaṇṭe tak upanyās paṛhā.

Anu read the novel for two hours on Sunday.

❌ विवेक घर से स्टेशन तक चलाया।

Incorrect for ‘Vivek walked’ — चलाया is the transitive causative ‘made move/drove.’

✅ विवेक घर से स्टेशन तक चला।

vivek ghar se sṭeśan tak calā.

Vivek walked from home to the station.

❌ सीमा ने स्टेशन पहुँचा।

Incorrect — intransitive पहुँचना does not take canonical ergative ने.

✅ सीमा स्टेशन पहुँची।

sīmā sṭeśan pahũcī.

Seema reached the station.

❌ निधि ने तीन कविताएँ पढ़ा।

Incorrect — unmarked feminine plural कविताएँ controls perfective agreement.

✅ निधि ने तीन कविताएँ पढ़ीं।

nidhi ne tīn kavitāẽ paṛhī̃.

Nidhi read three poems.

❌ उसने पूरा काम कर रही थी।

Incorrect — ने cannot mark the subject of this progressive form.

✅ वह पूरा काम कर रही थी।

vah pūrā kām kar rahī thī.

She was doing all the work.

Key Takeaways

Telicity comes from the whole predicate, including its object, path, and measure. Perfective viewpoint can bound atelic activities as episodes, while telic perfectives normally include their culmination. Duration with तक and completion time with में often expose the distinction. Agreement and ergativity follow the perfective clause’s syntax, not its degree of lexical telicity.
