Hindi forms the central future progressive with a lexical stem, agreeing रहा/रही/रहे, and future होगा/होगी/होंगे/होंगी: वह पढ़ रही होगी “She will be reading.” The progressive places the listener inside the event; the future auxiliary places that internal view at a later reference time. The same form can also express a conjecture about what is probably happening now, so temporal context is essential.
Aspect first, future anchor second
The construction is layered rather than a single future-progressive ending.
| Layer | In पढ़ रहा होगा | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| lexical stem | पढ़- | reading event |
| progressive | रहा | internal ongoing viewpoint, masculine singular |
| future/conjectural auxiliary | होगा | later anchoring or inference |
कल इस समय मैं ट्रेन में बैठा किताब पढ़ रहा होऊँगा।
kal is samay maĩ ṭren meṃ baiṭhā kitāb paṛh rahā hoū̃gā.
At this time tomorrow, I’ll be sitting on the train reading a book. (male speaker)
शाम को बच्चे मैदान में खेल रहे होंगे।
śām ko bacce maidān meṃ khel rahe hoṃge.
In the evening, the children will be playing in the field.
The explicit future expressions कल इस समय and शाम को favor future temporal anchoring. The full formation paradigm belongs with the progressive रहा construction; this page focuses on interpretation and use.
Agreement in the layered predicate
Both the progressive material and the future auxiliary reflect the eligible controller’s gender and number. Honorific singular reference patterns with plural agreement.
| Controller | Future progressive |
|---|---|
| masculine singular | कर रहा होगा |
| feminine singular | कर रही होगी |
| masculine/mixed plural | कर रहे होंगे |
| feminine plural | कर रही होंगी |
| आप, masculine honorific | कर रहे होंगे |
| आप, feminine honorific | कर रही होंगी |
डॉक्टर साहिबा दो बजे मरीज़ देख रही होंगी।
ḍokṭar sāhibā do baje marīz dekh rahī hoṃgī.
The doctor will be seeing patients at two. (respectful feminine reference)
Feminine plural/honorific रही does not become रहीं inside this construction; number is visible in होंगी.
Future progressive versus simple future
The simple future predicts an event or outcome; the future progressive chooses a point inside its unfolding. The distinction is viewpoint, not certainty.
| Viewpoint | Timeline |
|---|---|
| simple future | NOW —— future event |
| future progressive | NOW —— [ future event unfolding ] |
| future perfect/result | NOW —— future event | result |
कल पाँच बजे सिया रिपोर्ट लिखेगी।
kal pā̃c baje siyā riporṭ likhegī.
Siya will write the report at five tomorrow.
कल पाँच बजे सिया रिपोर्ट लिख रही होगी।
kal pā̃c baje siyā riporṭ likh rahī hogī.
At five tomorrow, Siya will be writing the report.
कल पाँच बजे तक सिया रिपोर्ट लिख चुकी होगी।
kal pā̃c baje tak siyā riporṭ likh cukī hogī.
By five tomorrow, Siya will have finished writing the report.
The first predicts the event, without forcing an inside view. The second locates five o’clock inside the writing. तक and चुकी होगी in the third place completion before the deadline. English uses familiar tense names, but the Hindi contrast is built from event viewpoint plus temporal anchoring.
Future time versus present conjecture
Without a clearly future adverbial, कर रहा होगा often means “must/probably be doing,” an inference about the present. This is especially natural when the speaker reasons from a routine or current circumstances.
अभी रोहन दफ़्तर पहुँच रहा होगा।
abhī rohan daftar pahũc rahā hogā.
Rohan is probably arriving at the office about now.
अगले सोमवार इस समय रोहन नए दफ़्तर जा रहा होगा।
agle somvār is samay rohan nae daftar jā rahā hogā.
At this time next Monday, Rohan will be going to the new office.
अभी favors conjecture about a current unfolding event. अगले सोमवार supplies an actual future reference time. Intonation and shared context can disambiguate where no time phrase is present.
Plans, schedules, and what will already be under way
The future progressive is useful when coordinating plans because it describes an event expected to occupy a future interval. It can politely warn that someone will be unavailable without presenting the event as a deliberate refusal.
तीन से चार के बीच मैं एक बैठक में बोल रहा होऊँगा, इसलिए फ़ोन नहीं उठा पाऊँगा।
tīn se cār ke bīc maĩ ek baiṭhak meṃ bol rahā hoū̃gā, islie fon nahīṃ uṭhā pāū̃gā.
Between three and four I’ll be speaking in a meeting, so I won’t be able to answer the phone. (male speaker)
जब आप पहुँचेंगे, हम रात का खाना खा रहे होंगे।
jab āp pahũceṃge, ham rāt kā khānā khā rahe hoṃge.
When you arrive, we’ll be eating dinner.
The जब clause uses a future form, and the main clause locates the arrival inside the ongoing meal. Hindi does not require English-style future avoidance in the subordinate clause.
Not the same as करते रहेंगे
कर रहे होंगे gives a future internal view. करते रहेंगे means “will keep doing / will continue to do,” with vector रहना expressing persistence. The two can overlap in translation but differ in event structure.
अगले हफ़्ते भी मज़दूर पुल की मरम्मत कर रहे होंगे।
agle hafte bhī mazdūr pul kī marammat kar rahe hoṃge.
Next week too, the workers will be repairing the bridge.
बारिश रुकने तक मज़दूर पानी निकालते रहेंगे।
bāriś rukne tak mazdūr pānī nikālte raheṃge.
The workers will keep removing water until the rain stops.
The first locates a repair event in progress next week. The second explicitly asserts continued repetition or persistence until an endpoint.
Agreement, transitivity, and bounded comparison
The future progressive is imperfective. An ordinary subject remains unmarked and controls agreement, even with a transitive verb. A later perfective report of the same event can activate ergative alignment.
कल दोपहर अनिता मेहमानों के लिए मिठाई बना रही होगी।
kal dopahar anitā mehmānoṃ ke lie miṭhāī banā rahī hogī.
Tomorrow afternoon, Anita will be making sweets for the guests.
अगले दिन अनिता ने मिठाई बनाई और सबको खिलाई।
agle din anitā ne miṭhāī banāī aur sabko khilāī.
The next day, Anita made the sweets and served them to everyone.
Feminine Anita controls रही होगी. In the perfective narrative, Anita takes ने, while feminine unmarked मिठाई controls बनाई. The future auxiliary does not license or block ने; aspect and transitivity determine the alignment frame.
A short projected narrative
कल सुबह शहर जाग रहा होगा और दुकानदार बाज़ार सजा रहे होंगे।
kal subah śahar jāg rahā hogā aur dukāndār bāzār sajā rahe hoṃge.
Tomorrow morning, the city will be waking up and shopkeepers will be arranging the market.
नौ बजे पहली बस पहुँचेगी और यात्री उतरने लगेंगे।
nau baje pahlī bas pahũcegī aur yātrī utarne lageṃge.
At nine, the first bus will arrive and passengers will begin to get off.
तब तक चाय वाले अपनी दुकानें खोल चुके होंगे।
tab tak cāy vāle apnī dukāneṃ khol cuke hoṃge.
By then, the tea sellers will have opened their shops.
Future progressives build the anticipated scene. Simple future events advance the projection, and चुके होंगे marks an expected prior completion. Aspect continues to organize foreground, background, and result even when every event lies in the future.
Common Mistakes
❌ कल इस समय मैं काम करूँगा रहा।
Incorrect — future progressive is built with progressive रहा plus future होना, not by adding रहा after a finite future.
✅ कल इस समय मैं काम कर रहा होऊँगा।
kal is samay maĩ kām kar rahā hoū̃gā.
At this time tomorrow, I’ll be working. (male speaker)
❌ कल वह पढ़ रही है।
Incorrect for a future internal view when no scheduled-present context is intended.
✅ कल वह इस समय पढ़ रही होगी।
kal vah is samay paṛh rahī hogī.
Tomorrow at this time, she’ll be studying.
❌ लड़कियाँ खेल रहे होंगे।
Incorrect feminine plural agreement.
✅ लड़कियाँ खेल रही होंगी।
laṛkiyā̃ khel rahī hoṃgī.
The girls will be playing.
❌ रीना ने खाना बना रही होगी।
Incorrect — the future progressive is imperfective and takes an unmarked subject.
✅ रीना खाना बना रही होगी।
rīnā khānā banā rahī hogī.
Reena will be cooking / is probably cooking.
Key Takeaways
Future progressives combine an event stem, agreeing progressive material, and future forms of होना. They locate a future reference point inside an unfolding event, but without a future anchor the same form often expresses present conjecture. Agreement appears across both layers, and honorific reference remains plural. कर रहे होंगे differs from continuative करते रहेंगे. As an imperfective, the future progressive has no canonical ने; a later perfective retelling may change alignment.
