फिर and दोबारा repetition

Both फिर and दोबारा can translate English again, but only फिर also means “then/after that/in that case.” दोबारा specifically presents an event as another occurrence, often a second attempt or repetition. Choosing between them depends on whether you are linking events in sequence or repeating one event.

फिर meaning “again”

Near the predicate, फिर can say that an event recurs.

रात में फिर बारिश हुई।

rāt meṃ phir bāriś huī.

It rained again during the night.

उसने फिर वही सवाल पूछा।

usne phir vahī savāl pūchā.

She asked the same question again.

Context supplies an earlier occurrence. वही makes the repeated content explicit, while फिर repeats the asking event.

Adding से produces फिर से, which strongly favors the repetition reading and is common in speech.

आवाज़ नहीं आई; ज़रा फिर से बोलिए।

āvāz nahīṃ āī; zarā phir se bolie.

I couldn't hear you; please say it again. (conversational, respectful)

💡
If bare phir could mean either “again” or “then,” use phir se when you need to make repetition unmistakable.

फिर meaning “then/after that”

At the beginning of a clause or before the next event, फिर advances a sequence.

पहले टिकट ले लो, फिर अंदर जाना।

pahle ṭikaṭ le lo, phir andar jānā.

First get a ticket, then go inside. (familiar)

हमने खाना खाया, फिर थोड़ी देर टहले।

hamne khānā khāyā, phir thoṛī der ṭahle.

We ate, then walked for a while.

Nothing is repeated here. दोबारा cannot replace फिर with the meaning “next.” In narratives, फिर links successive bounded events; a converb can package the same-subject sequence more tightly.

For the contrast between sequencing and a repeated calendar time, compare अब, आज, कल, तब.

दोबारा: another occurrence or attempt

दोबारा has no ordinary “then” meaning. It asks the listener to reconstruct, retry, or experience an event another time.

फ़ॉर्म ग़लत भर गया, इसलिए मुझे दोबारा भरना पड़ा।

form ġalat bhar gayā, islie mujhe dobārā bharnā paṛā.

The form was filled out incorrectly, so I had to fill it out again.

यह फ़िल्म मैं दोबारा देखना चाहूँगा।

yah film maĩ dobārā dekhnā cāhū̃gā.

I would like to watch this film again.

The word often suggests a distinct second performance, but it need not mean exactly twice; context can support any later recurrence. पुनः is a more Sanskritic formal alternative common in notices and official prose.

Scope within the clause

Repetition markers normally precede the predicate or the material whose recurrence they frame. Focus markers can restrict what is repeated.

उसने फिर से सिर्फ़ अंतिम पन्ना पढ़ा।

usne phir se sirf antim pannā paṛhā.

Once again, she read only the final page.

उसने सिर्फ़ अंतिम पन्ना दोबारा पढ़ा।

usne sirf antim pannā dobārā paṛhā.

She reread only the final page, not the others.

The first naturally repeats the larger event “read only the last page.” In the second, सिर्फ़ अंतिम पन्ना is the restricted object of rereading. Context and intonation can refine either sentence, but the adjacency makes these readings easiest.

Negation may leave bare फिर ambiguous:

वह फिर नहीं आया।

vah phir nahīṃ āyā.

He did not come again / Then he did not come.

Use दोबारा नहीं आया or फिर कभी नहीं आया for an unambiguous repetition reading, and a fuller sequence for the “then” reading.

Fixed combinations

तो फिर means “well then/in that case,” while फिर भी means “even so/nevertheless.” Their meanings are compositional only in part and should be learned as discourse units.

बारिश तेज़ थी, फिर भी मैच चलता रहा।

bāriś tez thī, phir bhī maic caltā rahā.

The rain was heavy, but the match continued nevertheless.

अगर आज समय नहीं है, तो फिर कल मिलते हैं।

agar āj samay nahīṃ hai, to phir kal milte haiṃ.

If there isn't time today, then let's meet tomorrow.

In neither sentence does दोबारा fit. The first is concessive; the second draws a practical consequence.

Lexical and phrase-based repetition

Hindi can express recurrence with a lexical adverb (दोबारा), a discourse adverb (फिर), or noun-based phrases such as एक बार फिर “once again,” दूसरी बार “for the second time,” and reduplicated बार-बार “repeatedly.”

उन्होंने एक बार फिर नियम समझाए।

unhoṃne ek bār phir niyam samjhāe.

They explained the rules once again. (respectful)

These alternatives provide distinctions that English may compress into again. Hindi does not create them by attaching an equivalent of re- or -ly to the verb.

Degree and position

फिर and दोबारा are not gradable: बहुत फिर and ज़्यादा दोबारा are impossible. Frequency is increased with a count or a frequency phrase: तीन बार, कई बार, बार-बार. In neutral order, the repetition marker remains before the predicate. A final मैं करूँगा दोबारा sounds like an afterthought, not a plain statement.

💡
Use a count or bār-bār for frequency. Do not try to intensify phir/dobārā with bahut.

Common Mistakes

❌ पहले खाना खाओ, दोबारा सो जाओ।

Incorrect for a sequence—दोबारा means ‘again,’ not ‘then.’

✅ पहले खाना खाओ, फिर सो जाओ।

pahle khānā khāo, phir so jāo.

First eat, then go to sleep. (familiar)

❌ मैं यह करूँगा दोबारा।

Unnatural as neutral order—the repetition marker normally precedes the predicate.

✅ मैं यह दोबारा करूँगा।

maĩ yah dobārā karū̃gā.

I will do this again.

❌ उसने फिर दोबारा फ़ोन किया।

Usually redundant—choose one repetition marker unless deliberate emphasis is intended.

✅ उसने दोबारा फ़ोन किया।

usne dobārā fon kiyā.

She called again.

❌ वह बहुत फिर आया।

Incorrect—फिर is not gradable.

✅ वह कई बार आया।

vah kaī bār āyā.

He came many times.

Key Takeaways

  • फिर can mean “again,” “then,” or occur in fixed discourse combinations.
  • फिर से and दोबारा clearly mark repetition; दोबारा cannot mean simple sequence.
  • Position and nearby focus expressions determine which material is repeated.
  • Counts and बार-बार, not degree words, express greater frequency.
