Formal Verb+Noun Collocations: נתן ביטוי, בא לידי

Written Hebrew has a second layer of light verbs sitting on top of the everyday ones. Where speech says נפגשנו, a news item says קיימנו פגישה; where speech says ביקר, a report says ערך ביקור. Nothing about these is difficult once you see the pattern — a colourless verb plus an abstract noun — but they are the difference between reading a newspaper and following it, and between prose that sounds professional and prose that sounds translated. This page pairs each with the sentence a person would actually speak, because the pairing is the skill.

The committee sat on the budget for two hours and settled nothing. (the spoken version of the same event)

השר ערך ביקור קצר במפעל בצפון.

💡
Using these in conversation is not a grammatical error. It is a register error, and it is audible: say קיימנו פגישה to a friend and you sound like a press release about yourself. The formal layer belongs in writing, in a briefing, or in deliberate irony — and Israelis use it for that third purpose constantly.

The two the dictionaries actually document

Most of the phrases above have no dictionary entry at all, which is dealt with below. Two are exceptions, and in both cases the entry corrects something usually taught wrongly.

נקט is pa'al, root נ־ק־ט, glossed by Hebrew Wiktionary as בחר — picked one option and used it — and every example in the entry takes a plain direct object: נקטתי דוגמה זו, השלטונות נקטו אמצעים חריפים (checked 21 August 2026). That is the argument for writing נקט צעדים rather than נקט בצעדים. It is not, however, a rule: measured with the same probe shape on both columns, the two patterns come out level on צעדים and the ב־ form actually leads on אמצעים, and no Academy ruling on the question was found. The figures and the reason the ב־ exists at all are on נתן and לקח.

שימש is pi'el, from Aramaic — once in Biblical Aramaic and freely in the rabbinic layer — and Hebrew Wiktionary glosses the relevant sense עסק, מילא תפקיד, החזיק במשרה, with the example יצחק גרינבוים שימש שר הפנים בממשלת ישראל הראשונה. Note what that example does not have: a כ. Bare-noun שימש is correct and well attested, and כ־ is the commoner modern variant rather than the only form. Measured on Hebrew Wikipedia with identical spacing on every column, 21 August 2026:

Framebare nounwith כ־
שימש (כ)ראש5211,159 — a floor, not a count
שימש (כ)מנהל2811,127 — a floor
שימש (כ)שר38192
שימשה (כ)מנהלת41199

So כ־ leads by somewhere between 2:1 and 5:1 depending on the noun, and the bare form is nowhere near extinct — the five bare hits sampled are all ordinary encyclopedic Hebrew of the שימש שר המלחמה type.

היא שימשה מנהלת המחלקה שלוש שנים.

hi shimshá menahélet hamakhlaká shalósh shaním

She served as head of the department for three years. (formal, bare noun)

היא שימשה כמנהלת המחלקה עד השנה שעברה.

hi shimshá kimnahélet hamakhlaká ad hashaná she'avrá

She served as head of the department until last year. (formal, the commoner variant)

Where the paperwork runs out

This has to be said plainly, because a C1 reader deserves to know how solid the ground is. נתן ביטוי ל־, בא לידי ביטוי, הטיל ספק and מילא תפקיד have no Hebrew Wiktionary entry — each was checked and returns nothing (21 August 2026). They are beyond question current: on Hebrew Wikipedia בא לידי ביטוי is in the 1,900s, a figure to be read as a floor, מילא תפקיד is around 1,600, הטיל ספק 300 and נתן ביטוי 101. But that is attestation, not lexicography, and this page presents them as observed usage rather than citing an entry that does not exist.

The pair worth watching is נתן ביטוי ל־ against בא לידי ביטוי ב־. They are not variants: the first has an agent who expresses something, the second has a thing that shows itself, with no agent anywhere.

הסרט נותן ביטוי לתסכול של דור שלם.

haséret notén bitúy latiskúl shel dor shalém

The film gives expression to the frustration of a whole generation. (formal, written)

השינוי בא לידי ביטוי כבר ברבעון הראשון.

hashinúy ba lidéi bitúy kvar bariv'ón harishón

The change was already apparent in the first quarter. (formal, written)

רואים את השינוי כבר בחודשים הראשונים.

ro'ím et hashinúy kvar bakhodashím harishoním

You can see the change in the first few months already. (the spoken paraphrase)

💡
One entry in the table quietly reverses the register you would expect. לקח בחשבון is not the "low" version of הביא בחשבון — it is the commoner one in edited prose as well: 67 against 33 in the past tense and 156 against 38 in the present, same shape on every column. Being a formal phrase and being the phrase writers reach for are two different properties.

התוכנית לא הביאה בחשבון את עלויות התחזוקה.

hatokhnít lo hevi'á bekheshbón et aluyót hatakhzuká

The plan did not take maintenance costs into account. (formal, written)

הדוח מטיל ספק באמינות הנתונים.

hadóakh metíl safék ba'aminút hanetuním

The report casts doubt on the reliability of the figures. (formal, written)

היא מילאה תפקיד מרכזי בהקמת הארגון.

hi mil'á tafkíd merkazí bahakamát ha'irgún

She played a central role in founding the organisation. (formal, written)

היא עמדה על כך שהחוזה ייחתם עוד היום.

hi amdá al kakh shehakhozé yekhatém od hayóm

She insisted that the contract be signed the same day. (formal, written)

היא התעקשה שנחתום על החוזה היום.

hi hit'akshá shenakhtóm al hakhozé hayóm

She insisted we sign the contract today. (the spoken version)

Common Mistakes

1. את in front of an indefinite noun. These collocations put a bare abstract noun after the verb, and it is indefinite — no article, no possessor, so no את.

❌ ראש העיר הביע את תמיכה בהצעה.

Incorrect — את marks a definite direct object only, and תמיכה here has no article: הביע תמיכה בהצעה. With a possessor it becomes definite and את returns: הביע את תמיכתו בהצעה.

✅ ראש העיר הביע תמיכה מלאה בתוכנית.

rosh ha'ír hibía temikhá mele'á batokhnít

The mayor expressed full support for the plan. (formal, written)

2. Making בא לידי ביטוי transitive. It has no object slot at all: the thing that shows itself is the subject.

❌ המנהל בא לידי ביטוי את עמדתו בישיבה.

Incorrect — בא לידי ביטוי takes no object; the thing expressed is its subject. Either עמדתו באה לידי ביטוי בישיבה, or, with the manager as agent, המנהל נתן ביטוי לעמדתו בישיבה.

✅ עמדתו של המנהל באה לידי ביטוי כבר בפתיחת הישיבה.

emdató shel hamenahél bá'a lidéi bitúy kvar biftikhát hayeshivá

The manager's position was already apparent at the opening of the meeting. (formal, written)

3. Taking the written layer into the room. Both sentences are correct. Only one of them is something to say to a colleague.

✅ קיימנו פגישה בנושא ביום שני.

kiyámnu pgishá banosé beyóm shení

We held a meeting on the matter on Monday. (a line for a report)

✅ נפגשנו על זה ביום שני, זוכר?

nifgáshnu al ze beyóm shení, zokhér?

We met about it on Monday, remember? (to a man — the same event, spoken)

4. Assuming כ־ is compulsory after שימש. It is the majority form and not the only one, and a bare noun is not a mistake to be corrected out of your writing.

✅ הוא שימש שר החוץ בשלוש ממשלות.

hu shimésh sar hakhúts beshalósh memshalót

He served as foreign minister in three governments. (formal, bare noun — the pattern the dictionary example uses)

✅ הוא שימש כשר החוץ עד ההתפטרות שלו.

hu shimésh kesár hakhúts ad hahitpatrút sheló

He served as foreign minister until his resignation. (formal, the commoner variant)

Key Takeaways

  • The formal layer is a colourless verb plus an abstract noun, and every entry has a spoken twin: קיים פגישה / נפגש, ערך ביקור / ביקר, הביע דעה / אמר מה הוא חושב.
  • Using it in speech is a register mismatch, not a grammatical error — and Israelis exploit that mismatch for irony.
  • נקט is pa'al, root נ־ק־ט, and its dictionary examples take a direct object; the ב־ variant is nonetheless level with it in the corpus, and no Academy ruling was found.
  • שימש is pi'el, from Aramaic, and the dictionary's own example takes a bare noun. כ־ leads by roughly 2:1 to 5:1, so both are correct.
  • נתן ביטוי ל־, בא לידי ביטוי, הטיל ספק and מילא תפקיד have no Hebrew Wiktionary entry; they are presented here from attested usage, and the counts are attestation, not lexicography.
  • בא לידי ביטוי takes no object. The thing expressed is the subject; for an agent, use נתן ביטוי ל־.
  • לקח בחשבון beats הביא בחשבון even in edited prose (67:33 past, 156:38 present) — formality and frequency are separate questions.
