Academic Hebrew

Academic Hebrew often makes relationships between claims explicit. It packages processes as nouns, marks contrast and inference with connective phrases, and often frames claims impersonally so that the evidence—not the writer—occupies the subject position. These are tendencies of expository prose, not a license to write long or opaque sentences.

Israeli university writing guides emphasize precision, conceptual clarity, coherence, organization, and concision. The goal of academic register is therefore not “the most formal wording possible,” but controlled wording whose logical structure a reader can recover.

From Events to Concepts: Nominalization

A clause presents participants and time: החוקרים ניתחו את הנתונים “the researchers analyzed the data.” A nominalization turns the process into a thing that another clause can classify, compare, or explain: ניתוח הנתונים “the analysis of the data.” Academic Hebrew uses this compression heavily.

החוקרים ניתחו את הנתונים והשוו בין הקבוצות.

hakhokrím nitkhú et hanetuním vehishvú bein hakvutsót.

The researchers analyzed the data and compared the groups.

ניתוח הנתונים העלה הבדל מובהק בין הקבוצות.

nitúakh hanetuním he'elá hevdél muvhák bein hakvutsót.

The analysis of the data revealed a significant difference between the groups.

The nominal version suppresses the human agent and lets ניתוח הנתונים serve as the grammatical subject. That is useful when the method matters more than the researcher. Too many nested nouns, however, burden the reader. For the morphology and ways to unpack these phrases, see Nominalization.

הרחבת המדגם תאפשר בחינה מדויקת יותר של ההשערה.

harkhavát hamidgám te'afshér bekhiná meduyéket yotér shel hahasha'ará.

Expanding the sample will permit a more precise examination of the hypothesis.

💡
When a Hebrew academic sentence feels impenetrable, underline each action noun—ניתוח, בחינה, הרחבה, השוואה—and mentally restore a verb. This often reveals who did what.

Impersonal Frames: Claim Without Inventing a Subject

Hebrew has no dummy pronoun equivalent to English “it” in “it can be seen.” Instead, academic prose uses יש + infinitive, ניתן + infinitive, an impersonal third-person plural, or a passive form.

יש להבחין בין מתאם לבין קשר סיבתי.

yesh lehavkhín bein mit'ám levein késher sibatí.

A distinction must be made between correlation and causation.

ניתן לראות שהפער מצטמצם לאורך זמן.

nitán lir'ót shehapá'ar mitstamtsém le'órekh zmán.

It can be seen that the gap narrows over time.

במחקרים קודמים מצאו קשר דומה בין המשתנים.

bemekhkarím kodmím mats'ú késher domé bein hamishtaním.

Previous studies found a similar relationship between the variables.

The plural מצאו has no named human subject; it means roughly “researchers found.” A passive participle can make the commitment more cautious by presenting a claim as established or assumed rather than personally asserted:

ההסבר המקובל מבוסס על שני מנגנונים מרכזיים.

hahesbér hamekubál mevusás al shnei manganoním merkazíyim.

The accepted explanation is based on two central mechanisms.

This is a hedge only in context: המקובל attributes acceptance to a scholarly community without naming every member. It does not prove that a consensus actually exists. For a fuller inventory, see Formal Impersonal Constructions.

Written Subordination: ש־, כי, אשר, כאשר

Everyday ש־ remains grammatical in academic Hebrew. Edited prose nevertheless distributes several linkers more specifically:

  • כי often introduces the content of a claim: המחקר מראה כי…
  • אשר introduces a relative clause (formal/written): המשתתפים אשר השלימו…
  • כאשר introduces a time or condition frame (written): כאשר המדגם גדל…
  • ש־ remains neutral and compact, especially where no ambiguity arises.

המחקר מראה שהשינוי אינו אחיד.

hamekhkár mar'é shehashinúi einó akhíd.

The study shows that the change is not uniform. (neutral)

המחקר מראה כי השינוי אינו אחיד.

hamekhkár mar'é ki hashinúi einó akhíd.

The study shows that the change is not uniform. (formal academic)

המשתתפים שהשלימו את השאלון נכללו בניתוח.

hamishtatfím shehishlímu et hash'elón nikhlélu banitúakh.

The participants who completed the questionnaire were included in the analysis. (neutral)

המשתתפים אשר השלימו את השאלון נכללו בניתוח.

hamishtatfím ashér hishlímu et hash'elón nikhlélu banitúakh.

The participants who completed the questionnaire were included in the analysis. (formal written)

The pairs are both grammatical. English-speaking learners often overuse ש־ because “that” covers both complement and relative functions in English. In carefully edited Hebrew, alternating כי and אשר can clarify clause type and register without changing the proposition.

💡
A formal linker does not make a claim more scholarly. Choose כי or אשר when it clarifies the clause boundary, and support the claim with evidence; register cannot substitute for attribution.

Paragraph Scaffolding

Academic connectors tell the reader what a sentence is doing. Their position in a paragraph matters more than memorizing an undifferentiated list.

Paragraph jobUseful framesRegister note
focus attentionיש לציין כי, מדובר ב־formal expository

contrastעם זאתneutral written

לפיכך is already prominent in the Mishnah—for example, Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5 begins an inference with לפיכך. כאמור is likewise strongly associated with written cross-reference in frames such as כאמור לעיל and כאמור בדוח. That distribution justifies the written label; it does not establish that the word is absent from speech.

יש לציין כי המדגם אינו מייצג את כלל האוכלוסייה.

yesh letsayén ki hamidgám einó meyatség et klal ha'ukhlusiyá.

It should be noted that the sample does not represent the entire population.

עם זאת, הממצאים תואמים את המגמה שתועדה במחקרים קודמים.

im zot, hamimtsa'ím to'amím et hamegamá sheto'adá bemekhkarím kodmím.

Nevertheless, the findings match the trend documented in previous studies.

An Academic Paragraph, Unpacked

The following six-sentence paragraph is deliberately compact but not inflated:

מחקר זה בוחן את השפעת העבודה מרחוק על שביעות הרצון של עובדים.

mekhkár ze bokhén et hashpa'át ha'avodá merakhók al svi'út haratsón shel ovdím.

This study examines the effect of remote work on employee satisfaction.

הנתונים נאספו באמצעות שאלון מקוון שהופץ בשלושה ארגונים.

hanetuním ne'esfú be'emtsa'út sh'elón mekuván shehufáts bishloshá irguním.

The data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed in three organizations.

ניתן לראות כי הגמישות בשעות העבודה קשורה לשביעות רצון גבוהה יותר.

nitán lir'ót ki hagmishút bish'ót ha'avodá kshurá lisvi'út ratsón gvohá yotér.

It can be seen that flexibility in working hours is associated with higher satisfaction.

עם זאת, לא נמצא קשר דומה בקרב עובדים חדשים.

im zot, lo nimtsá késher domé bekérev ovdím khadashím.

However, no similar relationship was found among new employees.

לפיכך יש לבחון את השפעת הוותק במחקר המשך.

lefikhákh yesh livkhón et hashpa'át havétek bemekhkar hemshékh.

Therefore, the effect of seniority should be examined in a follow-up study.

לסיכום, הממצאים מצביעים על יתרון אפשרי לגמישות תעסוקתית.

lesikúm, hamimtsa'ím matsbi'ím al yitrón efsharí ligmishút ta'asukatít.

In conclusion, the findings indicate a possible advantage for employment flexibility.

Common Mistakes

Translating English dummy “it” with הוא

❌ הוא ניתן לראות שהפער מצטמצם.

Incorrect — Hebrew does not use a dummy subject pronoun in this impersonal frame.

✅ ניתן לראות שהפער מצטמצם.

nitán lir'ót shehapá'ar mitstamtsém.

It can be seen that the gap is narrowing.

Distinguishing two מדובר frames

✅ מדובר על תופעה מורכבת.

medubár al tofa'á murkévet.

The discussion is about a complex phenomenon. (Common, less formal frame.)

✅ מדובר בתופעה מורכבת.

medubár betofa'á murkévet.

This is a complex phenomenon. (Formal existential frame.)

Calquing an English passive with a pronoun

❌ הוא נטען שהשיטה אינה יעילה.

Incorrect — ‘it is argued’ is expressed impersonally as נטען, without הוא.

✅ נטען שהשיטה אינה יעילה.

nit'án shehashitá einá ye'ilá.

It is argued that the method is ineffective.

Keeping attribution frames distinct

✅ לפי החוקרים, המדגם קטן מדי.

lefí hakhokrím, hamidgám katán midái.

According to the researchers, the sample is too small.

✅ החוקרים טוענים שהמדגם קטן מדי.

hakhokrím to'aním shehamidgám katán midái.

The researchers argue that the sample is too small.

Using the English preposition after מבוסס

❌ המודל מבוסס בנתונים חלקיים.

Incorrect — מבוסס governs על, not ב־.

✅ המודל מבוסס על נתונים חלקיים.

hamodél mevusás al netuním khelkíyim.

The model is based on partial data.

Key Takeaways

  • Academic style makes logical relations explicit through connectors placed according to paragraph function.
  • Nominalization compresses events; impersonal framing removes the need for English-style dummy “it.”
  • כי and אשר can distinguish content clauses from relative clauses in carefully edited prose, while ש־ remains grammatical.
  • Precision and transparent structure matter more than maximum formality.
