A light verb is one that has been drained of most of its meaning so that a noun can carry it: in take a decision the deciding is all in the noun, and take only supplies a tense and a subject. Hebrew does this constantly, and נתן and לקח are its two busiest light verbs after עשה. The trap is not the verbs. It is the belief that you get to pick one.
The pairing is stored, not derived
There is no rule anywhere in Hebrew that predicts נתן over עשה over לקח for a given noun, and no semantic story that survives contact with the data. החלטה takes קיבל, receive. חלק takes לקח, take. דוגמה takes נתן, give. מעמד takes החזיק. Each pairing is a fact about that noun, and the only way to have it is to have learnt the pair whole.
The measurement below shows how absolute this can get. On Hebrew Wikipedia, with the identical probe shape on both columns and a leading space on each (checked 21 August 2026), insource:/ לקח החלטה / returns 0 and insource:/ לקחו החלטה / returns 1 — and that single hit sits in a translated article, in a sentence about Spotify. The controls on the same frame are insource:/ קיבל החלטה / 189 and insource:/ קיבלו החלטה / 36.
הוא נתן דוגמה מהחיים ופתאום כולם הבינו.
hu natán dugmá mehakhayím ufit'óm kulám hevínu

The נתן family
| Hebrew | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| נתן דוגמה natán dugmá | give an example | neutral; הביא דוגמה is the bookish alternative |
| נתן אמון ב־ natán emún be- | place trust in | neutral to formal; the ב־ is obligatory |
| נתן הזדמנות ל־ natán hizdamnút le- | give a chance to | neutral |
| נתן דחיפה ל־ natán dkhifá le- | give a boost to | neutral |
| נתן יד ל־ natán yad le- | be party to, lend one's hand to | often disapproving — see below |
| נתן צ׳אנס natán tshans | give someone a chance | informal; the neutral phrase is נתן הזדמנות |
נתן יד ל־ is the one worth slowing down on, because a translation as lend a hand misses its colouring. Reading the corpus hits in context, the phrase mostly attaches to something the writer is not endorsing — being party to it, letting it happen — rather than to simple helpfulness. If you want he helped, the word is עזר.
אני לא אתן יד לזה, זה פשוט לא בסדר.
aní lo etén yad lazé, ze pashút lo beséder
I'm not going to be party to this — it's simply not right.
הם נתנו בו אמון מלא, והוא לא איכזב.
hem natnú bo emún malé, vehú lo ikhzév
They placed complete trust in him, and he didn't let them down.
תן לו עוד הזדמנות אחת, הוא באמת משתדל.
ten lo od hizdamnút akhát, hu be'emét mishtadél
Give him one more chance — he really is trying. (to a man)
The לקח family
מישהו צריך לקחת אחריות על מה שקרה שם.
míshehu tsaríkh lakákhat akhrayút al ma shekará sham
Somebody needs to take responsibility for what happened there.
לקחת על עצמך יותר מדי משימות השנה.
lakákht al atsmékh yotér midái mesimót hashaná
You've taken on too much this year. (to a woman)
קחי את זה ברצינות, זה לא צחוק.
kekhí et ze birtsinút, ze lo tsekhók
Take this seriously — it's no joke. (to a woman)
הוא לקח את הזמן וענה רק אחרי יומיים.
hu lakákh et hazmán ve'aná rak akharéi yomáyim
He took his time and only answered two days later.
בוא ניקח הפסקה של רבע שעה.
bo nikákh hafsaká shel réva sha'á

קחו בחשבון שהמשרד סגור ביום שישי.
kekhú bekheshbón shehamisrád sagúr beyóm shishí
Bear in mind that the office is closed on Friday. (to a group)
לקח and its formal twin נטל
Several לקח-collocations have a נטל version that means the same thing in a higher register. This is not a case of one being right — both are current in edited prose — and the interesting part is that the split is lexeme by lexeme, not a uniform preference. Measured on Hebrew Wikipedia with the same shape on every column, a leading and trailing space throughout, 21 August 2026:
| Pair | לקח | נטל | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| לקח / נטל חלק | 2,789 | 1,319 | both four-figure counts are floors; the ratio of about 2:1 reproduces in the plural (1,473 : 809) |
| לקח / נטל אחריות | 211 | 199 | a dead heat — here the formal verb holds its own |
| לקח / נטל על עצמו | 764 | 219 | about 3.5:1 toward לקח |
| לקח / נטל סיכון | 5 | 6 | single digits, every hit read: all genuine on both sides |
בטקס נטלו חלק נציגי כל הקהילות.
batékes natlú khélek netsigéi kol hakehilót
Representatives of all the communities took part in the ceremony. (formal, written)
נקט: why a documented synonym still cannot be swapped in
נקט is the worked case, because it is the one verb here with a full dictionary entry. Hebrew Wiktionary gives it as root נ־ק־ט, binyan pa'al, glossed בחר — chose one option among several and used it — from Aramaic in the rabbinic layer, where it meant אחז, החזיק, "grasped, held" (checked 21 August 2026). Its own examples take a plain direct object: נקטתי דוגמה זו, השלטונות נקטו אמצעים חריפים.
You will nevertheless meet נקט בצעדים with a ב־ everywhere, and the reason is written into that etymology: the verbs נקט once was, אחז and החזיק, both govern their object with ב־. The ב־ is analogy from the verb's own family, not carelessness.
So how do the two behave now? Same shape on both columns, 21 August 2026: with צעדים, the bare object and the ב־ object come out level across three past-tense forms (165 : 183 in total — נקט 57:86, נקטה 62:51, נקטו 46:46). With עמדה, the bare object wins about 2:1 (136 : 68). With אמצעים the ב־ leads (12 : 21). No clean winner, and no Academy ruling on the question was found, so nothing here should be presented as a rule. Write נקט צעדים if you want the pattern the dictionary's own examples show; do not correct anyone who writes the other one.
המשטרה נקטה צעדים חריגים בסוף השבוע.
hamishtará naktá tse'adím kharigím besóf hashavúa
The police took unusual measures over the weekend. (formal, written)
הוא עדיין לא נקט עמדה בעניין הזה.
hu adáyin lo nakát emdá ba'inyán hazé
He still hasn't taken a position on this. (formal, written)
Common Mistakes
1. Taking a decision. The measurement above is as close to absolute as usage evidence gets.
❌ לקחתי החלטה לעזוב את העבודה.
Incorrect — החלטה does not combine with לקח. Hebrew receives a decision: קיבלתי החלטה לעזוב את העבודה.
✅ קיבלתי החלטה לעזוב את העבודה בסוף השנה.
kibálti hakhlatá la'azóv et ha'avodá besóf hashaná
I decided to leave the job at the end of the year.
2. Making a meeting take place. Every word is Hebrew and the sentence parses, which is why this one survives proofreading.
❌ הישיבה לקחה מקום בחמש, אחרי כל ההודעות.
the meeting took place at five, after all the announcements
Incorrect as that meaning — the string reads 'the meeting took a seat', or 'took Nth place'. For an event, Hebrew uses התקיים: הישיבה התקיימה בחמש.
✅ הישיבה התקיימה בחמש, בלי חצי מהצוות.
hayeshivá hitkayemá bekhamésh, bli khatsí mehatsévet
The meeting took place at five, without half the team.
3. Putting את in front of an indefinite object. אחריות here is indefinite — no article, no possessor — so it takes no את.
❌ הוא לקח את אחריות על התקלה.
Incorrect — את marks a definite direct object only, and אחריות here is indefinite: הוא לקח אחריות על התקלה. Add את only when the noun is definite, as in לקח את האחריות שלו ברצינות.
✅ הוא לקח אחריות על התקלה ותיקן אותה בעצמו.
hu lakákh akhrayút al hatakalá vetikén otá be'atsmó
He took responsibility for the fault and fixed it himself.
4. Reaching for נטל in conversation. Both of these are correct Hebrew. Only one of them is something to say out loud at work.
✅ נטלתי על עצמי את הטיפול בתלונות הציבור.
natálti al atsmí et hatipúl bitlunót hatsibúr
I took upon myself the handling of public complaints. (formal, written — a sentence for a report)
✅ לקחתי על עצמי את כל התלונות, זה יותר מדי.
lakákhti al atsmí et kol hatlunót, ze yotér midái
I've taken on all the complaints myself — it's too much. (the spoken version)
Key Takeaways
- A light verb is chosen by the noun, not by you. החלטה takes קיבל, חלק takes לקח, דוגמה takes נתן — and no rule generates the list.
- Measured on Hebrew Wikipedia, 21 August 2026:
insource:/ לקח החלטה /0 andinsource:/ לקחו החלטה /1 (a translated article), againstinsource:/ קיבל החלטה /189 andinsource:/ קיבלו החלטה /36. - נטל is לקח's formal twin, and the split is lexeme by lexeme: about 2:1 toward לקח with חלק, a dead heat with אחריות, about 3.5:1 with על עצמו.
- Four-figure corpus counts are floors, not counts — argue from ratios.
- נקט is pa'al, root נ־ק־ט, from Aramaic אחז, החזיק. That etymology explains the widespread נקט ב־, which measures level with the bare object on צעדים. No Academy ruling was found; do not present either as the rule.
- נתן יד ל־ is closer to be party to than to lend a hand. For plain helping, use עזר.
- לקח ללב appears in no dictionary consulted here. Use it in speech; do not cite it, and do not repeat the claim that it means something different from the English.
