αποτελώ means “constitute, form” and often replaces είμαι in careful exposition. Its most useful form is mediopassive αποτελείται από, “consists of.” You will meet it in specifications, ingredient lists, reports, curricula, and encyclopedia prose long before you need to produce its rarer cells.
Η καθυστέρηση αποτελεί σοβαρό πρόβλημα για την εταιρεία.

Principal parts
| Slot | Forms | Register/status |
|---|---|---|
| Mediopassive aorist | αποτελέστηκε | (formal); exceptionally rare but attested |
| Imperative | αποτέλεσε / αποτελέστε | grammatical, rare |
| Productive mediopassive perfective series | Does not exist in ordinary use: recognize the isolated aorist above rather than generating a full series from it. | |
The active aorist is ordinary in formal narrative, while mediopassive αποτελέστηκε is much rarer than present αποτελείται. Rarity is not absence, so the attested aorist must not be marked ungrammatical—but neither should learners extrapolate an ordinary perfective paradigm from it.
Η έκθεση αποτέλεσε σημείο αναφοράς για τη συζήτηση.
i ékthesi apotélese simío anaforás ya ti sizítisi
The report became a reference point for the discussion. (formal)
Στόχος μας είναι να αποτελέσει η πρόταση βάση για συμφωνία.

i prosoriní kivérnisi apoteléstike apó ekprosópus trión komáton
The provisional government was formed from representatives of three parties. (formal; very rare form)
The regular Class Β2 endings are taught on active Β2 verbs. English consist of looks active; Greek packages the whole as mediopassive αποτελείται από—literally, it “is constituted from” its parts.
Two perspectives on one whole
The active and mediopassive frames reverse the informational perspective. Active τα μέλη αποτελούν την επιτροπή starts with the parts and says what whole they form. Mediopassive η επιτροπή αποτελείται από τα μέλη starts with the whole and inventories its parts. This is why από is stable in the second frame: it introduces the components from which the whole is constituted.
Τρεις ειδικοί αποτελούν την επιτροπή αξιολόγησης.
tris idhikí apotelún tin epitropí aksiolóyisis
Three specialists make up the evaluation committee. (formal)
Η επιτροπή αξιολόγησης αποτελείται από τρεις ειδικούς.
i epitropí aksiolóyisis apotelíte apó tris idhikús
The evaluation committee consists of three specialists. (formal)
Although the second form is morphologically mediopassive, it usually describes a stable composition rather than an event suffered by the subject. Perfective αποτελέστηκε forces an event reading—“was formed”—which helps explain both why it exists and why it is much less frequent than stative αποτελείται.
Register and the everyday alternative
αποτελώ is common in formal writing and careful public speech, not confined to the page. In casual conversation, είμαι or a more concrete verb is usually lighter. The difference is stylistic, not a truth-condition.
Αυτό αποτελεί σοβαρό εμπόδιο.
aftó apotelí sovaró embódhio
This constitutes a serious obstacle. (formal)
Αυτό είναι σοβαρό εμπόδιο.
aftó íne sovaró embódhio
This is a serious obstacle.
Government
Active αποτελώ takes an accusative predicate/object: αποτελεί εξαίρεση. Mediopassive αποτελούμαι takes από + accusative for the components. It does not use σε in the “consist of” frame.
Η προστασία των δεδομένων αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος του σχεδίου.
i prostasía ton dhedhoménon apotelí anapóspasto méros tu schedhíu
Data protection forms an integral part of the plan. (formal)
Set phrases
- αποτελεί πρόβλημα / εξαίρεση / πρόκληση — constitutes a problem / exception / challenge
- αποτελεί αντικείμενο έρευνας — is an object of research (academic)
- αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος — forms an integral part
- αποτελείται από — consists of
The noun αποτέλεσμα “result” and adjective αποτελεσματικός “effective” share the historical root, though their current meanings are not transparent extensions of “constitute.”
In academic prose, αποτελεί can also organize an argument by classifying a finding as a problem, exception, example, or research object. That compact classification is useful, but repeated αποτελεί makes prose bureaucratic; alternate with είναι, συνιστά(formal), or a more concrete verb when the relationship permits it.
Common Mistakes
❌ Το πρόγραμμα αποτελείτε από τρεις ενότητες.
Incorrect — αποτελείτε is active second-person plural; the mediopassive third-person singular is αποτελείται.
✅ Το πρόγραμμα αποτελείται από τρεις ενότητες.
to próghrama apotelíte apó tris enótites
The program consists of three units.
Key Takeaways
- αποτελώ · αποτελούσα · αποτέλεσα · αποτελέσω · έχω αποτελέσει.
- αποτελείται από is the high-value receptive form; English active consist of corresponds to Greek mediopassive.
- Mediopassive aorist αποτελέστηκε exists but is exceptionally rare and formal; do not extrapolate a full productive series from it.
