επικοινωνώ is learned in origin but standard in modern professional and everyday Greek. It means “communicate, get in touch,” especially in customer service, email, and arrangements. Its active paradigm is regular Class Β2 except for the conspicuous stress of the aorist επικοινώνησα.

The rare transitive use treats a message or policy as something to be communicated, and it can form a passive. This is separate from everyday intransitive επικοινωνώ με κάποιον “get in touch with someone.”

The accent shifts left in επικοινώνησα and επικοινώνησε, but stays final-stem in επικοινωνήσω / επικοινωνήστε. The forms ×επικοινώνισα and ×επικοινωνήσα are not standard. General accent placement belongs to aorist accent, while the present endings belong to active Β2 verbs.

For a phone call, παίρνω τηλέφωνο is casual and concrete. μιλάω με is ordinary “speak with.” επικοινωνώ is neutral but especially at home in professional exchanges; έρχομαι σε επαφή sounds more administrative when it means “make contact.”

Telephone openings themselves belong to telephone conversations.
With με, the other participant belongs to a contact relation even when only one participant is the grammatical subject. That does not guarantee an equal two-way exchange: επικοινωνώ can also describe getting a message through. Plural επικοινωνούμε μεταξύ μας makes mutuality explicit. A separate spatial sense is also standard: rooms, roads, or regions επικοινωνούν when a passage connects them.

Government
Use με + accusative for the person or organization contacted: επικοινωνώ με τον υπεύθυνο. A channel takes με or formal μέσω. By contrast, σε is normal for a contact point introduced after the imperative: επικοινωνήστε στο κεντρικό τηλέφωνο. The rule is therefore not “never σε,” but “not σε for the person.”

English permits transitive contact someone with no preposition. Greek επικοινωνώ is intransitive in this use and requires με. This is a lexical government difference, not a freely interchangeable preposition choice.

Aspect follows the ordinary communication event. Imperfect επικοινωνούσαμε presents an ongoing relationship or repeated contact; aorist επικοινωνήσαμε presents one successful contact as complete. Δεν καταφέραμε να επικοινωνήσουμε therefore often implies that no connection was established, not merely that no conversation was completed.
