Verbs and Their Prepositions

Some Greek verbs select a particular preposition before their complement. This relationship is called government: the verb determines the frame, even when another preposition would seem more logical from English. There is no general rule that predicts εξαρτώμαι από “depend on” but βασίζομαι σε “rely on”: each verb and its frame must be learned as one lexical unit. For the meanings of the prepositions outside these frames, begin with the preposition overview.

The high-value frames

All four ordinary prepositions below take an accusative complement. With σε + definite article, the normal contraction is compulsory: αναφέρομαι στο θέμα, not ×σε το θέμα.

εξαρτώμαι απόdepend onεξαρτάται από τον καιρό · eksartáte apó ton keró · it depends on the weather

πιστεύω σεbelieve in; have faith inπιστεύω στην ομάδα · pistévo stin omádha · I believe in the team
μοιάζω με / σεresemble; take afterμοιάζει με τη μητέρα του · miázi me ti mitéra tu · he resembles his mother
θυμώνω μεget angry with/atθύμωσα με τον αδερφό μου · thímosa me ton adherfó mu · I got angry with my brother

αναφέρομαι σεrefer to; concernαναφέρομαι στο άρθρο · anaférome sto árthro · I am referring to the article
συμφωνώ μεagree withσυμφωνώ με τη Μαρία · simfonó me ti María · I agree with Maria

Η τιμή εξαρτάται από το μέγεθος και το υλικό.

i timí eksartáte apó to méyethos ke to ilikó

The price depends on the size and the material.

Ενδιαφέρομαι για το διαμέρισμα· μπορώ να το δω αύριο;

endhiaférome ya to dhiamérizma; boró na to dho ávrio;

I'm interested in the flat; can I see it tomorrow?

💡
Write new vocabulary as a complete frame: εξαρτώμαι από κάτι, not just εξαρτώμαι. The placeholder κάτι reminds you that the preposition belongs to the verb and that its complement is accusative.

Meaning can change the frame

Πιστεύω shows why memorizing “verb = English verb” is not enough. Direct πιστεύω + accusative means believing a person or statement; πιστεύω σε + accusative means having faith in someone or something.

Σε πιστεύω, αλλά δεν πιστεύω σε αυτό το σχέδιο.

se pistévo, alá dhen pistévo se aftó to schédhio

I believe you, but I don't believe in this plan.

💡
A familiar English translation can hide two Greek frames. Test the meaning in a full sentence: believing a claim is not the same relationship as believing in a person.

Μοιάζω με makes an explicit comparison and is the broad everyday choice. Μοιάζω σε, especially with family resemblance, is also standard: μοιάζεις στον πατέρα σου “you take after your father.” Do not condemn either frame.

Η κόρη του μοιάζει πολύ στη μητέρα της, ειδικά στον χαρακτήρα.

i kóri tu miázi polí sti mitéra tis, idhiká ston charaktíra

His daughter takes after her mother a lot, especially in character.

English “with” may disappear

The normal verb construction is ερωτεύομαι + direct accusative. English requires with after “fall in love,” but Greek does not insert με to mark the person loved. The related state expression does use it: είμαι ερωτευμένος με “be in love with.”

Ερωτεύτηκε τη νέα του συνάδελφο μόλις τη γνώρισε.

erotéftike ti néa tu sinádhelfo mólis ti ghnórise

He fell in love with his new colleague as soon as he met her.

Είναι ερωτευμένη με τον Νίκο εδώ και μήνες.

íne erotefméni me ton Níko edhó ke mínes

She has been in love with Nikos for months.

Person, topic, and proposition

Συμφωνώ με introduces the person or position one agrees with. A topic can instead take σε (συμφωνώ σε αυτό), while an agreed arrangement commonly uses για or a clause. The verb therefore has several frames, each doing different work. The present forms συμφωνώ and συμφωνάω are both living Standard Greek forms.

Συμφωνώ με την ανάλυσή σου, αλλά όχι με το συμπέρασμα.

simfonó me tin análisí su, alá óchi me to simbérazma

I agree with your analysis, but not with the conclusion.

Η ανακοίνωση αναφέρεται σε όλους τους νέους υπαλλήλους.

i anakínosi anaférete se ólus tus néus ipalílus

The announcement concerns all new employees. (formal)

Μη θυμώνεις μαζί μου· προσπάθησα να βοηθήσω.

mi thimónis mazí mu; prospáthisa na voithíso

Don't be angry with me; I tried to help.

Ασχολούμαι με τα τιμολόγια τώρα και θα σε πάρω αργότερα.

ascholúme me ta timolóyia tóra ke tha se páro arghótera

I'm dealing with the invoices now, and I'll call you later.

Key Takeaways

  • Verb government is lexical: memorize the verb + preposition + case as one unit.
  • English prepositions do not predict Greek ones: depend on is εξαρτώμαι από, while believe in is πιστεύω σε.
  • A changed frame can change meaning: πιστεύω κάποιον and πιστεύω σε κάποιον are not interchangeable.
