Greek Cities and Regions

Greek place names are proper nouns, but they still have grammatical gender, number, and case. In an ordinary full sentence, learn η Αθήνα, ο Πειραιάς, τα Χανιά, not bare names alone. The article tells you how to build στην Αθήνα, στον Πειραιά, and στα Χανιά.

Not every place is a city: η Κρήτη is an island, η Πελοπόννησος a peninsula and region, and το Αιγαίο a sea. Their grammar follows the same principle: each name has a fixed article and declension.

The table shows why translation is not enough. English Patras ends in -s, but Greek η Πάτρα is feminine; English singular Chania corresponds to grammatically plural τα Χανιά.

Η Αθήνα αδειάζει αισθητά τον Δεκαπενταύγουστο.

i Athína adhiázi esthitá ton Dhekapendávghusto

Athens becomes noticeably quieter around the Fifteenth of August.

Ο Πειραιάς συνδέεται με πολλά νησιά του Αιγαίου.

o Pireás sindhéete me polá nisiá tu Eyéu

Piraeus is connected with many Aegean islands.

Η Πελοπόννησος έχει ορεινά χωριά και μεγάλες ακτές.

i Pelopónisos échi oriná choriá ke megháles aktés

The Peloponnese has mountain villages and long coastlines.

Feminine cities are common, but not universal

Many major city names are feminine: η Αθήνα, η Θεσσαλονίκη, η Πάτρα, η Λάρισα, η Καβάλα. That makes στη(ν) and από τη(ν) very frequent. Yet ο Πειραιάς and ο Βόλος are masculine, while το Ρέθυμνο and το Ηράκλειο are neuter.

Η Μαρίνα σπουδάζει στη Θεσσαλονίκη και οι γονείς της μένουν στην Πάτρα.

i Marína spudházi sti Thesaloníki ke i ghonís tis ménun stin Pátra

Marina studies in Thessaloniki, and her parents live in Patras.

Αύριο πάμε με το αυτοκίνητο στον Βόλο και μετά συνεχίζουμε στο Πήλιο.

ávrio páme me to aftokínito ston Vólo ke metá sinechízume sto Pílio

Tomorrow we're going by car to Volos and then continuing to Pelion.

Το συνέδριο θα γίνει στο Ηράκλειο στα τέλη Μαΐου.

to sinédhrio tha yíni sto Iráklio sta téli Maíu

The conference will take place in Heraklion in late May.

Endings offer clues, but a place's article remains lexical. Store the article with the name rather than trying to reconstruct gender during conversation.

Islands and regions that look masculine

Several important islands and regions end in -ος but are feminine: η Κρήτη does not show the issue, but η Ρόδος, η Λέσβος, η Μύκονος, η Νάξος, η Πελοπόννησος do. They take feminine articles while following an -ος declension.

Η Ρόδος δέχεται πολλούς επισκέπτες και την άνοιξη.

i Ródhos dhéchete polús episképtes ke tin ániksi

Rhodes receives many visitors in spring too.

Περάσαμε μία εβδομάδα στη Νάξο και τρεις ημέρες στη Μύκονο.

perásame mía evdhomádha sti Nákso ke tris iméres sti Míkono

We spent a week on Naxos and three days on Mykonos.

Η ιστορία της Πελοποννήσου είναι κεντρική για τη μελέτη της αρχαίας Ελλάδας.

i istoría tis Peloponísu íne kendrikí ya ti meléti tis archéas Eládhas

The history of the Peloponnese is central to the study of ancient Greece.

The shifted stress in της Πελοποννήσου belongs to the declension. The broader pattern is taught on feminine nouns in -ος.

Plural-only place names

Some place names are grammatically plural even when English treats the city or site as singular. Neuter plural τα Ιωάννινα, τα Χανιά, τα Τρίκαλα take στα / από τα. Οι Δελφοί is masculine plural and takes στους / από τους.

NameGenitiveIn/toFrom
τα Ιωάννινατων Ιωαννίνωνστα Ιωάννινααπό τα Ιωάννινα
τα Χανιάτων Χανίωνστα Χανιάαπό τα Χανιά
τα Τρίκαλατων Τρικάλωνστα Τρίκαλααπό τα Τρίκαλα
οι Δελφοίτων Δελφώνστους Δελφούςαπό τους Δελφούς

Plural agreement remains visible on adjectives and verbs, even though an English translation often has a singular city name.

Τα Ιωάννινα είναι γνωστά για τη λίμνη και το κάστρο τους.

ta Ioánina íne ghnostá ya ti límni ke to kástro tus

Ioannina is known for its lake and castle.

Τα Χανιά παραμένουν δημοφιλή και εκτός καλοκαιριού.

ta Chaniá paraménun dhimofilí ke ektós kalokeriú

Chania remains popular outside the summer season too.

Οι Δελφοί βρίσκονται στις πλαγιές του Παρνασσού.

i Dhelfí vrískonde stis playiés tu Parnasú

Delphi lies on the slopes of Parnassus.

💡
With a plural-only name, do not translate the English number back into Greek. Let the Greek article control the whole phrase: τα Ιωάννινα είναι γνωστά, οι Δελφοί βρίσκονται.

Case changes inside place phrases

The nominative names a subject: η Θεσσαλονίκη, ο Βόλος. The genitive connects one place to another noun: το κέντρο της Θεσσαλονίκης, το λιμάνι του Βόλου. Everyday σε and από take accusative place phrases.

Το κέντρο της Θεσσαλονίκης είναι εύκολο να το περπατήσεις.

to kéndro tis Thesaloníkis íne éfkolo na to perpatísis

The centre of Thessaloniki is easy to explore on foot.

Το λεωφορείο από τη Θεσσαλονίκη έφτασε στον Βόλο στην ώρα του.

to leoforío apó ti Thesaloníki éftase ston Vólo stin óra tu

The bus from Thessaloniki arrived in Volos on time.

Από την Κρήτη θα πετάξουμε στη Σαντορίνη το απόγευμα.

apó tin Kríti tha petáksume sti Sandoríni to apóyevma

From Crete we will fly to Santorini in the afternoon.

Ordinary articles and bare labels

In an integrated sentence, articles are normal: Η Αθήνα μεγάλωσε, μένω στην Αθήνα, έρχομαι από την Αθήνα. A bare name can appear where the layout itself means “name of place”: on a map, a road sign, a ticket field, or an itinerary heading.

Προορισμός: Θεσσαλονίκη· αναχώρηση: οκτώ και μισή.

proorismós: Thesaloníki; anachórisi: októ ke misí

Destination: Thessaloniki; departure: eight thirty. (ticket fields)

That label does not make Θεσσαλονίκη genderless. Once it enters a sentence again, the article returns according to syntax.

Common Mistakes

Masculine final ν in neutral writing

Current neutral writing retains the masculine final ν in στον Πειραιά. Relaxed speech may reduce the final sound, and older or informal spelling may reflect that reduction; neither variant makes the place neuter.

✅ Σε παλιό σημείωμα γράφει «στο Πειραιά».

se palió simíoma ghráfi «sto Pireá»

An old note says 'to Piraeus.' (older spelling)

✅ Το καράβι φτάνει στον Πειραιά λίγο πριν ξημερώσει.

to karávi ftáni ston Pireá lígho prin ksimerósi

The ship arrives in Piraeus shortly before dawn.

Keeping a genitive ending after από

❌ Μόλις γύρισαν από τη Θεσσαλονίκης.

Incorrect — από takes the accusative place form: από τη Θεσσαλονίκη.

✅ Μόλις γύρισαν από τη Θεσσαλονίκη με το τελευταίο τρένο.

mólis yírisan apó ti Thesaloníki me to teleftéo tréno

They have just returned from Thessaloniki on the last train.

Making Chania singular

❌ Στη γεωγραφική εργασία γράψαμε ότι το Χανιά είναι πόλη της Κρήτης.

Incorrect for the city in this integrated context — Χανιά is neuter plural: τα Χανιά.

✅ Στη γεωγραφική εργασία γράψαμε ότι τα Χανιά είναι πόλη της Κρήτης.

sti yeoghrafikí erghasía ghrápsame óti ta Chaniá íne póli tis Krítis

In the geography project, we wrote that Chania is a city on Crete.

Guessing masculine from Πελοπόννησος

❌ Ο Πελοπόννησος συνδέεται με τη Στερεά Ελλάδα.

Incorrect — Πελοπόννησος is feminine: η Πελοπόννησος.

✅ Η Πελοπόννησος συνδέεται με τη Στερεά Ελλάδα στον Ισθμό.

i Pelopónisos sindhéete me ti Stereá Eládha ston Isthmó

The Peloponnese is connected to Central Greece at the Isthmus.

Using a singular contraction with Ioannina

❌ Στην εκδρομή θα μείνουμε στο Ιωάννινα, την πρωτεύουσα της Ηπείρου, δύο βράδια.

Incorrect for the city in this integrated context — Ιωάννινα is neuter plural, so use στα.

✅ Στην εκδρομή θα μείνουμε στα Ιωάννινα, την πρωτεύουσα της Ηπείρου, δύο βράδια.

stin ekdhromí tha mínume sta Ioánina, tin protévusa tis Ipíru, dhío vrádhia

On the trip, we will stay in Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, for two nights.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn each place with its article: η Αθήνα, ο Πειραιάς, τα Χανιά, η Κρήτη, το Αιγαίο.
  • Many cities are feminine, but masculine and neuter names are frequent enough that endings cannot replace memorization.
  • Several islands and regions in -ος are feminine: η Ρόδος, η Νάξος, η Πελοπόννησος.
  • Plural-only names control plural grammar: τα Ιωάννινα είναι γνωστά, οι Δελφοί βρίσκονται.
  • Genitive names express “of”; everyday σε and από take accusative place phrases.
  • Ordinary integrated reference normally uses an article, while labels and headings may use the bare name.
