Continents and Directions

Greek geography uses three different grammatical tools that English often hides inside one word: a noun for a compass point (ο βορράς “the north”), an invariable adverb for relative position (βόρεια “north/northward”), and an agreeing adjective (βόρειος, βόρεια, βόρειο “northern”). Choosing the correct tool distinguishes “north of Greece,” “in northern Greece,” and “northern Greece.”

Continent names are simpler: the six names on this page are feminine proper nouns and normally take their article in an integrated sentence.

The continent names

ContinentGenitiveIn/toFrom

i etería dhrastiriopiíte stin Evrópi ke stin Asía

The company operates in Europe and Asia.

Πολλά αποδημητικά πουλιά φτάνουν από την Αφρική την άνοιξη.

polá apodhimitiká puliá ftánun apó tin Afrikí tin ániksi

Many migratory birds arrive from Africa in spring.

Η Ανταρκτική έχει πολύ διαφορετικό κλίμα από την Ωκεανία.

i Andarktikí échi polí dhiaforetikó klíma apó tin Okeanía

Antarctica has a very different climate from Oceania.

Geographical models do not all divide the Americas identically. One convention counts η Αμερική as a single continent with northern and southern subdivisions; another counts η Βόρεια Αμερική and η Νότια Αμερική as two continents. Greek supplies all three names, so the terminology does not force one counting convention. The two compound names are proper geographical names, and their identifying adjectives are normally capitalized.

Ο Καναδάς βρίσκεται στη Βόρεια Αμερική και η Χιλή στη Νότια Αμερική.

o Kanadhás vrískete sti Vória Amerikí ke i Chilí sti Nótia Amerikí

Canada is in North America, and Chile is in South America.

In ordinary full reference the article is normal. A map label or table heading may show bare Ευρώπη or Ασία, just as other proper-name labels do.

Noun, adverb, or adjective?

Compass pointNounAdverbAdjective
northο βορράςβόρειαβόρειος, βόρεια, βόρειο
southο νότοςνότιανότιος, νότια, νότιο
eastη ανατολήανατολικάανατολικός, ανατολική, ανατολικό
westη δύσηδυτικάδυτικός, δυτική, δυτικό

The nouns can refer to a region or compass point and take articles and case: ο βορράς της χώρας, στον νότο, από την ανατολή. The adverbs do not agree or decline. The adjectives agree with a noun.

Στον βορρά ο χειμώνας διαρκεί συνήθως περισσότερο.

ston vorá o chimónas dhiarkí siníthos perisótero

In the north, winter usually lasts longer.

Το παράθυρο κοιτάζει δυτικά και βλέπει τη θάλασσα.

to paráthiro kitázi dhitiká ke vlépi ti thálasa

The window faces west and looks out over the sea.

Ένας ισχυρός βόρειος άνεμος έκλεισε το λιμάνι.

énas ischirós vórios ánemos éklise to limáni

A strong northerly wind closed the port.

The last sentence needs masculine βόρειος because it modifies masculine άνεμος. Βόρεια would instead be an adverb or a feminine adjective.

Three ways to describe the north of a place

These patterns are similar in English but structurally distinct in Greek.

External position: βόρεια της Ελλάδας

Bare directional adverb + genitive locates something outside or relative to the reference place: βόρεια της Ελλάδας “north of Greece,” δυτικά της Κρήτης “west of Crete.” Από + accusative is also possible and often makes the relative meaning explicit: βόρεια από την Αθήνα.

Το νησί βρίσκεται ανατολικά της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας.

to nisí vrískete anatoliká tis ipirotikís Eládhas

The island lies east of mainland Greece.

Η λίμνη είναι περίπου σαράντα χιλιόμετρα βόρεια από την πόλη.

i límni íne perípu saránda chiliómetra vória apó tin póli

The lake is about forty kilometres north of the city.

Here the genitive after the directional adverb is not one of the learned genitive-governing prepositions. It is the reference place attached to a locative relation. The formal preposition set is separated on genitive after learned prepositions.

Inside the northern part: στα βόρεια της Ελλάδας

Adding στα creates a nominalized neuter plural phrase, literally “in the northern parts.” This places something inside the northern area of the reference place.

Τον χειμώνα χιονίζει συχνότερα στα βόρεια της Ελλάδας.

ton chimóna chionízi sichnótera sta vória tis Eládhas

In winter it snows more often in northern Greece.

Βρήκαμε ένα ήσυχο χωριό στα νότια της Κρήτης.

vríkame éna ísicho chorió sta nótia tis Krítis

We found a quiet village in the south of Crete.

The plural form is fixed by the construction: στα βόρεια, στα νότια, στα ανατολικά, στα δυτικά.

An agreeing modifier: η βόρεια Ελλάδα

The adjective sits inside the noun phrase and agrees with the place name: feminine η βόρεια Ελλάδα, feminine η δυτική Κρήτη, neuter το ανατολικό Αιγαίο, plural τα νότια προάστια.

Η δυτική Κρήτη έχει διαφορετικό τοπίο από το ανατολικό τμήμα του νησιού.

i dhitikí Kríti échi dhiaforetikó topío apó to anatolikó tmíma tu nisiú

Western Crete has a different landscape from the eastern part of the island.

Στο ανατολικό Αιγαίο αναμένονται ισχυροί άνεμοι.

sto anatolikó Eyéo anaménonde ischirí ánemi

Strong winds are expected in the eastern Aegean. (weather-report register)

💡
Compare the structure, not just the translation: βόρεια της Ελλάδας = north of Greece; στα βόρεια της Ελλάδας = in Greece's northern area; η βόρεια Ελλάδα = northern Greece.

Intermediate directions are single words

Greek builds the diagonal directions as compounds. The adverbs end in -ά and remain invariable: βορειοανατολικά, νοτιοανατολικά, βορειοδυτικά, νοτιοδυτικά. Their adjectives agree: βορειοανατολικός άνεμος, νοτιοδυτική ακτή.

Το χωριό βρίσκεται βορειοανατολικά της λίμνης.

to chorió vrískete vorioanatoliká tis límnis

The village lies northeast of the lake.

Η νοτιοδυτική ακτή προστατεύεται καλύτερα από τον άνεμο.

i notiodhitikí aktí prostatévete kalítera apó ton ánemo

The southwestern coast is better protected from the wind.

Μετά τη διασταύρωση κατευθυνθείτε προς τα βορειοανατολικά.

metá ti dhiastávrosi katefthinthíte pros ta vorioanatoliká

After the junction, head northeast. (formal directions)

The phrase προς τα + direction presents a heading or orientation. A compact route can also use από ... προς ....

Το μέτωπο κινείται από τα δυτικά προς τα ανατολικά.

to métopo kiníte apó ta dhitiká pros ta anatoliká

The front is moving from west to east. (weather-report register)

Capitalization

Continents and established geographical names are proper nouns: Ευρώπη, Βόρεια Αμερική, Νότια Αμερική. Ordinary compass nouns, adverbs, and descriptive adjectives are lowercase: ο βορράς, δυτικά, η βόρεια Ελλάδα. At the start of a sentence, the normal sentence-initial capital applies.

This distinction separates a fixed name from a description. η Νότια Αμερική is the name of a continent; η νότια Ιταλία simply describes the southern part of Italy.

Common Mistakes

Giving a feminine continent a neuter contraction

❌ Η αποστολή εργάστηκε στο Ασία, τη μεγαλύτερη ήπειρο, για έξι μήνες.

Incorrect for the continent in this integrated context — Ασία is feminine: στην Ασία.

✅ Η αποστολή εργάστηκε στην Ασία, τη μεγαλύτερη ήπειρο, για έξι μήνες.

i apostolí erghástike stin Asía, ti meghalíteri ípiro, ya éksi mínes

The mission worked in Asia, the largest continent, for six months.

Using an adjective where an adverb is required

❌ Η κωμόπολη βρίσκεται βόρειος της λίμνης.

Incorrect — relative position needs the invariable adverb βόρεια.

✅ Η κωμόπολη βρίσκεται βόρεια της μεγάλης λίμνης.

i komópoli vrískete vória tis meghális límnis

The small town lies north of the large lake.

Using a singular article for “in the northern parts”

❌ Καλλιεργούν μήλα στο βόρεια της χώρας.

Incorrect — the noun-like direction phrase is neuter plural: στα βόρεια.

✅ Καλλιεργούν μήλα στα βόρεια της χώρας, σε μεγάλο υψόμετρο.

kalierghún míla sta vória tis chóras, se meghálo ipsómetro

They grow apples in the north of the country, at high altitude.

Failing adjective agreement

❌ Η βόρειος Ελλάδα έχει χαμηλότερες θερμοκρασίες.

Incorrect — the adjective agrees with feminine Ελλάδα: βόρεια.

✅ Η βόρεια Ελλάδα έχει συχνά χαμηλότερες θερμοκρασίες.

i vória Eládha échi sichná chamilóteres thermokrasíes

Northern Greece often has lower temperatures.

Capitalizing an ordinary direction mid-sentence

❌ Το μονοπάτι συνεχίζει προς τα Δυτικά μετά τη γέφυρα.

Incorrect capitalization — an ordinary compass direction is lowercase.

✅ Το μονοπάτι συνεχίζει προς τα δυτικά μετά την πέτρινη γέφυρα.

to monopáti sinechízi pros ta dhitiká metá tin pétrini yéfira

The path continues west after the stone bridge.
