Country names have grammatical gender and sometimes plural number in Greek. The article makes that information visible: η Ελλάδα is feminine singular, ο Καναδάς masculine singular, το Μεξικό neuter singular, οι ΗΠΑ feminine plural, and τα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα neuter plural. Gender then controls the article used for subject, possession, origin, location, and destination. The countries overview separates these names from nationality and language forms; this page concentrates on the country noun phrase itself.
In ordinary full reference, Greek normally uses the definite article with a country name. The article is not literally part of the proper name, however: map labels, headings, form fields, and some elliptical styles can show a bare name. Learn the ordinary noun phrase with its article because that is what predicts the grammar.
The main gender groups
Most familiar country names ending in -α, -ία, or -η are feminine, but the ending is a useful tendency rather than a universal proof. Store every new name as a pair.
| Gender/number | Current Standard examples |
|---|---|
Αγγλία means England, not the whole United Kingdom; the latter is το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Αμερική can refer geographically to America/the Americas and is also used colloquially for the United States, but the unambiguous state name is οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες or οι ΗΠΑ. Ολλανδία is extremely common in everyday Greek, while οι Κάτω Χώρες is the official geographical/state designation (formal).
Η Ισπανία και η Πορτογαλία βρίσκονται στην Ιβηρική Χερσόνησο.

Feminine does not mean “ends in -α”
The large feminine group makes η a good first hypothesis, especially with -ία: η Ιταλία, η Γερμανία, η Αυστραλία. Yet some feminine country names end in -ος, notably η Κύπρος and η Αίγυπτος. Conversely, visual resemblance to a common ending cannot replace the article.
Η Κύπρος είναι νησί στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο.
i Kípros íne nisí stin anatolikí Mesóyio
Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean.
Η Αίγυπτος εκτείνεται και στην Αφρική και στην Ασία.
i Éyiptos ektínete ke stin Afrikí ke stin Asía
Egypt extends into both Africa and Asia.
These examples show why memorizing the bare ending is not enough. The ordinary vocabulary item is η Κύπρος, not an inferred gender rule for every noun in -ος.
Singular case forms
Country phrases decline through the article and, where the noun has case endings, through the country name itself. The most useful patterns are nominative for a subject, genitive for “of,” and accusative after everyday place prepositions. The full motion/location contrast belongs to prepositions with places, while articles with names and places explains the broader proper-name pattern.
| Country | Subject | “of” | “in/to” | “from” |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ελλάδα | η Ελλάδα | της Ελλάδας | στην Ελλάδα | από την Ελλάδα |
| Γαλλία | η Γαλλία | της Γαλλίας | στη Γαλλία | από τη Γαλλία |
| Καναδάς | ο Καναδάς | του Καναδά | στον Καναδά | από τον Καναδά |
| Μεξικό | το Μεξικό | του Μεξικού | στο Μεξικό | από το Μεξικό |
The feminine final ν in τη(ν) / στη(ν) is sound-conditioned: it is retained before a vowel and before specified stop-like sounds, hence στην Ελλάδα and στην Κίνα, but normally στη Γαλλία and στη Ρωσία. Neutral current Standard Greek retains masculine τον / στον, as in τον Καναδά / στον Καναδά.
Η οικονομία της Ελλάδας βασίζεται σε πολλούς διαφορετικούς κλάδους.
i ikonomía tis Eládhas vasízete se polús dhiaforetikús kládhus

to musío dhanístike tin ékthesi apó to Meksikó

Plural country names
Plural country names require plural articles and agreement. Οι ΗΠΑ is a feminine plural abbreviation because its full form is οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής. Τα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα is neuter plural.
| Country | Subject | “of” | “in/to” | “from” |
|---|---|---|---|---|
i adherfí tu spudházi stis Ipá me ipotrofía

Η πτήση από τα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα έφτασε νωρίτερα.
i ptísi apó ta Inoména Araviká Emiráta éftase norítera
The flight from the United Arab Emirates arrived earlier.
Although English treats the United States as singular for verb agreement, Greek οι ΗΠΑ is morphologically plural and normally triggers plural agreement.
Οι ΗΠΑ ανακοίνωσαν νέα μέτρα για τις εισαγωγές.
i Ipá anakínosan néa métra ya tis isaghoyés
The United States announced new measures on imports.
When the article can be absent
Ordinary sentences use the article: Η Ιταλία είναι..., μένω στην Ιταλία, έρχομαι από την Ιταλία. A bare country name is normal where the surrounding format supplies the label function.
Χώρα γέννησης: Ελλάδα.
chóra yénisis: Eládha
Country of birth: Greece. (form-field label)
Προορισμός: Ιαπωνία· αναχώρηση: Δευτέρα.
proorismós: Iaponía; anachórisi: Dheftéra
Destination: Japan; departure: Monday. (itinerary heading)
Headlines, lists, map labels, and compressed travel style can behave similarly. This is why “country names always take an article” is too broad. The accurate rule is that a fully integrated, ordinary country noun phrase normally has one; restricted naming and label environments may not.
Common Mistakes
Guessing masculine from every -ος ending
❌ Η δασκάλα εξήγησε ότι ο Κύπρος είναι νησιωτική χώρα κοντά στην Τουρκία.
Incorrect for the country in this integrated context — Κύπρος is feminine: η Κύπρος.

o Kanadhás íne megháli ke areokatikiméni chóra

Incorrect — από takes the accusative in this everyday place phrase.
✅ Γυρίσαμε χθες από τη βόρεια Ιταλία.
yirísame chthes apó ti vória Italía
We returned yesterday from northern Italy.
Treating a plural country name as singular

✅ Οι ΗΠΑ ανακοίνωσαν αλλαγές στους κανόνες εισόδου για φοιτητές.
i Ipá anakínosan alayés stus kanónes isódhu ya fitités

Leaving σε uncontracted

Incorrect in neutral Standard Greek — σε + το contracts to στο.
✅ Θα μείνουμε στο νότιο Μεξικό για δύο εβδομάδες.
tha mínume sto nótio Meksikó ya dhío evdhomádhes
We will stay in southern Mexico for two weeks.
Key Takeaways
- Learn each country with its ordinary article: η Ελλάδα, ο Καναδάς, το Μεξικό.
- Most country names in -α / -ία / -η are feminine, but η Κύπρος and η Αίγυπτος show that endings are not proofs.
- Everyday από takes an accusative place phrase; σε + article contracts to στη(ν), στον, στο, στις, στα.
- Neutral Standard keeps masculine final ν in τον / στον; feminine τη(ν) / στη(ν) is sound-conditioned.
- Οι ΗΠΑ is feminine plural; τα Ηνωμένα Αραβικά Εμιράτα is neuter plural.
- Ordinary full reference normally has an article, but labels, headings, and other naming environments can use the bare country name.
