Instrumental and conveyance voice matters most when a text follows an item through transfer, placement, use, or reuse. A report may introduce a package under actor voice, select it as conveyed-theme pivot when it changes hands, then switch to locative voice when its destination becomes central. An instrument can similarly become pivot when the discourse contrasts means rather than actors or results.
These switches are not optional English active/passive alternations. Each one changes the pivot, participant markers, and the route by which reference is maintained. The basic frames are summarized on instrumental and conveyance voice.
Common Discourse Jobs
| Discourse task | Typical choice | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| introduce a transfer activity | actor voice + ng theme | establishes the actor's action |
| track the item through endpoints | conveyance voice + ang theme | keeps the transferred item as pivot |
| contrast tools or funds | instrumental voice + ang means | makes the chosen means central |
| shift attention to recipient/place | recipient/locative voice | reorganizes the next clause around the endpoint |
| recover an accessible pivot | pronoun or omission | avoids needless repetition when reference is clear |
Voice choice remains lexical: a discourse preference cannot create an unattested derivative.
Introducing a Theme, Then Tracking It
Rina prepared a small package for the health center. She sent it to the Bohol branch, and the driver handed it to the nurse the next day. (theme introduced, then maintained)
Conveyance ipinadala then selects the same package as pronoun pivot iyon. In the final clause, the package is omitted after iniabot because it remains uniquely recoverable; the actor changes to ng drayber and the recipient to sa nars.
The shift does not make the driver or Rina unimportant. It gives the package a stable grammatical path through several events.
One Theme, Changing Actors and Destinations
The secretary received the signed agreement. The lawyer put it in an envelope, the office sent it to headquarters, and the manager will store it there. (one document, changing actors and endpoints)
The agreement remains the patient/conveyed theme across tinanggap, isinilid, ipinadala, and contemplated itatago. Its actors change, while sa sobre, sa punong himpilan, and locative adverb roon identify successive destinations. Aspect also changes, but the reference chain remains document-centered.
English active translations repeatedly make the actors subjects. Filipino can maintain the document as pivot without treating the clauses as marked passives.
A Controlled Voice Choice
Assume the speaker has been discussing both a coordinator and a revised schedule:
Nagpadala si Nestor ng binagong iskedyul sa lahat ng sangay.
Nestor sent a revised schedule to every branch. (actor voice: continues a report about Nestor)
Nestor sent the revised schedule to every branch. (conveyance voice: continues a report about the schedule)
Both can refer to the same known schedule in context. Actor voice selects si Nestor; conveyance voice selects ang binagong iskedyul and changes Nestor to ni Nestor. A following sentence about the schedule's contents fits especially smoothly after the second, but discourse preference does not override lexical or syntactic constraints.
Shifting from Theme to Recipient
A transferred item may be pivot in one clause, then the recipient may become pivot when the discourse begins tracking that person.
Mila gave Arturo the temporary card. She also gave Arturo a copy of the rules, so he now knows when to return. (theme pivot, then recipient pivot)
In the first clause, ang pansamantalang kard is conveyed pivot and Arturo is kay Arturo. Recipient/locative binigyan then selects si Arturo, while the copy becomes ng kopya. Repeating ni Arturo in the final clause prevents niya from being misread as referring to Mila. The voices have different discourse jobs even though English uses gave twice.
This switch requires the complete marker remapping. Changing only kay Arturo to si Arturo while retaining ibinigay would be ungrammatical for the intended roles.
Tracking an Instrument or Means
Instrumental voice is particularly useful when a text contrasts what was used.
There were two tools in the box. Lito used the small knife to slice a mango, but he used the large scissors to cut thick cloth. (contrasted instrument pivots)
The first tool is pivot under ipinanghiwa. The second is pivot under ipinanggupit. The contrast tracks instruments, not affected materials. Because productive instrumental forms vary lexically and morphophonemically, prose may instead use ginamit ... sa pagputol when a derived form is unfamiliar.
The association used the funds raised in the contest to buy seedlings. The remainder, in turn, was used to pay for delivery. (means maintained across sentences)
Ang pondong nalikom is a means pivot under ipinambili. The next sentence uses ang natira to maintain the remaining portion as pivot under ipinambayad. The actor can be omitted because the association remains recoverable.
Aspect Builds the Event Sequence
The team is still putting the records into separate boxes. When they finish the preparations, the driver will take them to the archive and give the list to the administrator. (ongoing preparation and projected transfer)
Incompleted inilalagay supplies an ongoing background. Contemplated ihahatid projects the records' next movement. Contemplated ibibigay selects ang talaan as a new theme pivot. Pronoun ang mga iyon prevents confusion between the plural records and singular list.
Voice and aspect must be tracked separately: voice selects the participant, while aspect presents the event as unfolding, bounded, or contemplated.
Questions Establish the Discourse Center
—What did you send to the branches? —The new guide. We sent it yesterday, and each branch will place it in its own office. (question establishes theme chain)
The question selects the unknown conveyed theme. The answer identifies ang bagong gabay, then maintains it with iyon and an omitted/understood theme under ilalagay. The destination changes by branch, but the guide remains the discourse center.
Negation and Reference
Ruel did not send the original certificate. He put it in the safe and sent only the certified copy. (negation and conveyed-theme contrast)
Negation leaves ang orihinal na sertipiko as pivot. The following clause maintains it with iyon, then ang pinatunayang kopya becomes the contrastive new conveyed pivot. Particle lamang has narrow limiting force over the copy sent.
Register and Variation
Formal logistics, administrative, and journalistic prose often repeats full noun phrases to prevent ambiguity. Conversation uses ito/iyon, 'to/'yon (informal), and omission more freely. Spoken yung (informal) may replace careful ang for an accessible pivot. These are reference-management choices, not new voice categories.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the actor as pivot after switching to conveyance voice
❌ Naghanda si Rina ng pakete. Ipinadala siya ang pakete sa Bohol.
Incorrect—ipinadala selects the package, so Rina cannot remain the ang-form actor.
✅ Naghanda si Rina ng pakete. Ipinadala niya iyon sa Bohol.
Rina prepared a package. She sent it to Bohol.
Changing a recipient marker without changing voice
Incorrect—ibinigay selects the card, not Arturo, as pivot.
Mila gave Arturo a temporary card. (recipient pivot)
Losing the referent after two themes compete
Pagkatapos, ipinadala niya iyon.
Ambiguous—the singular iyon does not identify which of the two newly mentioned items Ruel sent.
Ruel placed the certificate and the copy on the table. Afterward, he sent the copy.
Treating an instrument pivot like an affected patient
Incorrect for instrumental voice—the knife is the selected means and the rope remains non-pivot.
Lito used the small knife to slice the rope.
Key Takeaways
- Conveyance voice can maintain a transferred or placed theme across changing actors and endpoints.
- Instrumental voice is useful when a tool, material, or fund is contrasted and tracked.
- A switch to recipient or locative voice requires a complete change in verb morphology and participant markers.
- Pronouns and omission are safe only while the intended pivot remains uniquely recoverable.
- Aspect, negation, register, and voice make independent contributions to connected discourse.
