Instrumental and Conveyance Voice: Definiteness and Referentiality

Conveyance voice often makes a transferred, placed, applied, or encoded theme the ang-marked pivot. Instrumental voice can instead make a tool, material, or means the pivot. These selected participants are frequently identifiable because speakers are tracking a particular parcel, document, key, or payment—but ang is not simply the Filipino equivalent of English the.

Referentiality supports a voice choice; it does not replace lexical grammar. The verb must license the selected role, and actor, recipient, destination, and affected item retain their own markers. The role frames are reviewed in instrumental and conveyance voice.

Why These Pivots Are Often Identifiable

A thing being sent or placed is easy to track once it has been mentioned, pointed out, possessed, or distinguished from alternatives. A tool is similarly salient when the conversation concerns which object was used.

Source of identifiabilityTypical pivotWhat anchors it
prior mentionang sobrethe envelope has entered the discourse
demonstrativeang martilyong iyoniyon points to a particular tool
possessorang susi ni Nenathe owner anchors the key
restrictive modifierang talaang pinirmahan kahaponthe clause singles out one list
bounded amountang natitirang dalawang kahonthe quantity delimits a set

There was an envelope on the table. Lando gave Tess the envelope before the meeting began. (prior-mentioned conveyed pivot)

The existential first clause introduces sobre. The next clause selects that same item as the conveyed pivot ang sobre. Ni Lando is actor, while kay Tess is recipient.

The custodian put the remaining two keys in a secure cabinet. (bounded placed-theme pivot)

The numeral and natitira delimit the keys. The cabinet remains a destination with sa, even though it is also identifiable.

💡
Ask which participant the clause is organized around, not which English noun has the. Identifiability makes a good pivot easier to track, but voice still depends on the verb's lexical frame.

The Same Specific Theme in Two Voices

Specificity does not force conveyance voice. Hold the sender, recipient, and document constant:

Nagpadala si Lira ng kumpletong talaan kay Omar bago magtanghali.

Lira sent Omar the complete list before noon. (actor voice: Lira is pivot)

Lira sent Omar the complete list before noon. (conveyance voice: the list is pivot)

Kumpletong talaan can refer to the same known document in both. Actor voice selects si Lira and marks the theme with ng. Conveyance voice selects ang kumpletong talaan, changes the actor to ni Lira, and keeps kay Omar as recipient. The contrast is how the event is viewed and tracked, not active versus passive or definite versus indefinite.

An English speaker may expect a specific direct object always to take ang. Filipino instead coordinates marker choice with voice. A demonstrative theme can remain ng-marked under actor voice: Nagpadala si Lira ng talaang iyon kay Omar.

Ang Can Introduce a New but Selected Theme

An ang pivot need not have been mentioned previously. Modification or the event itself can establish a newly selected referent.

The guard handed me a package with no name on it. (new but selected conveyed pivot)

English uses a, yet ang isang pakete is the pivot. The indefinite numeral isang presents a new individual, and the relative modifier characterizes it. Thus ang cannot be translated as the in isolation.

The secretary wrote a notice sent by the principal on the board. (new encoded-content pivot)

The notice is selected as content put into writing. Sa pisara is the surface. A locative form such as sinulatan would choose a surface or addressee instead and therefore require a different marker map.

Instrument Pivots and Discourse Salience

An instrumental pivot is normally inanimate, but inanimacy does not license the construction by itself. The established ipang- family presents an object or material as the means used for another action.

Cora used the old cloth diaper in the bucket to wipe the mirror. (identified instrument pivot)

The relative phrase identifies the cloth. Ni Cora is actor, ng salamin the affected item, and ang lumang lampin the instrument pivot.

Arturo used the money he saved during the summer to pay the tuition. (possessor-linked means pivot)

The money is referential because the relative clause links it to Arturo's savings. The obligation remains sa matrikula. Underlying ipang- + bayad surfaces with m before b: ipambayad, completed ipinambayad.

💡
An instrumental pivot is the selected means, not every phrase English introduces with with. Accompaniment, manner, and incidental objects require other constructions.

Generic and Institutional Pivots

An ang-marked theme or instrument can receive a generic reading in instructions or policy statements.

Thick paper is used to wrap fragile equipment before transport. (generic procedural instrument)

No unique sheet of paper has to be known. The sentence presents ang makapal na papel as the conventional wrapping material in a generic procedure. The omitted actor is generic.

Likewise, Ipinadadala sa punong tanggapan ang buwanang ulat tuwing unang Lunes can describe an institutional routine. Incompleted morphology and a frequency expression create a habitual reading; ang buwanang ulat is a type-like conveyed pivot.

Negation and Questions Do Not Remove Reference

Sabel did not put the medicine in its usual container because it needed refrigeration. (negated conveyance event)

Negation denies the placement. It does not turn ang gamot into an ng-marked theme or make ni Sabel the pivot.

—Which envelope did you send to the Cebu branch? —The one with the blue stamp. (selection from a known set)

The question asks the listener to identify a conveyed-theme pivot. The fragment answer uses iyon + linker -g → iyong to select the intended envelope.

Register and Variation

In conversation, yung (informal) often replaces careful ang with an accessible pivot: Ipadala mo yung may asul na selyo. The register difference does not change the selected role.

Speakers may also avoid a rare instrumental derivative and use actor or patient voice plus gamit ang. For instance, an established ipang- form is natural when the tool is central; Hiniwa niya ang kalabasa gamit ang kutsilyong iyon is often clearer when the cutting result is central. This is accepted constructional variation, not free substitution of affixes.

Common Mistakes

Treating ang as the English article the

Incorrect—actor-voice nagpadala already selects Lira, so its theme cannot also take ang.

Lira sent Omar the complete list. (actor voice)

Keeping the actor as pivot under conveyance voice

Incorrect—inilagay selects the keys as pivot, so the custodian must be ng-marked.

The custodian put the two keys in the cabinet.

Selecting a recipient in an ibigay frame

Incorrect for ibinigay—this form selects the envelope, not Tess, as pivot.

Lando gave Tess the envelope before the meeting.

Treating the affected item as the instrumental pivot

Incorrect for instrumental voice—the cloth, not the mirror, is the selected means.

Cora used the old cloth diaper to wipe the mirror.
