The root tanim organizes events of planting and establishing something in a place. Magtanim selects the planter, itanim selects the seed, cutting, or plant put into the ground, taniman/tamnan selects the ground or site that receives the planting, and ipatanim selects something whose planting a causer arranges. The same family extends figuratively to ideas, suspicion, evidence, anger, and other things conceived as being made to take root.
English usually preserves one verb, plant, whether it follows the farmer, the seedlings, or the field. Filipino voice changes the marker frame, so a reliable reference must record a root-centered network rather than one English translation plus a list of time forms.
Core forms and functions
All unmarked forms are (neutral). The two locative rows are accepted variant paradigms; they are not random short and long spellings.
| Family | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Typical pivot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| actor voice | magtanim | nagtanim | nagtatanim | magtatanim | planter; planted theme normally takes ng |
| conveyance/patient voice | itanim | itinanim | itinatanim | itatanim | selected seed, cutting, plant, or figurative content |
| full locative variant | taniman | tinaniman | tinataniman | tataniman | selected plot, container, or other planted site |
| syncopated locative variant | tamnan | tinamnan | tinatamnan | tatamnan | the same locative role, in an accepted reduced family |
| potential/result patient voice | matanim | natanim | natatanim | matatanim | selected theme that can be or has successfully been planted |
| causative/conveyance | ipatanim | ipinatanim | ipinapatanim / ipinatatanim | ipapatanim / ipatatanim | selected seed or plant whose planting is arranged by a causer |
These rows mark aspect rather than tense. Incompleted nagtatanim can describe planting in progress or a regular occupation. Contemplated magtatanim presents the planting as unrealized and often receives a future interpretation from context.
Magtanim and itanim: planter versus planted theme
Actor-voice magtanim selects the planter with ang/si. The crop, seed, or cutting takes ng, and the site normally follows sa. Conveyance/patient-voice itanim selects the planted theme with ang; its planter takes an ng-series marker, while the site remains a sa phrase.
Nagtanim si Melba ng mga punla ng sili sa malalaking paso.
Melba planted chili seedlings in large pots. (completed actor voice; neutral)
Itinanim ni Melba ang mga punla ng sili sa malalaking paso.
Melba planted the chili seedlings in large pots. (completed conveyance/patient voice; neutral)
The first clause follows Melba; the second follows the identifiable seedlings. The event need not change, but si Melba ... ng mga punla realigns as ni Melba ... ang mga punla. This is the central voice contrast, not free alternation between article-like words.
Nagtatanim ng mga halamang mabango ang kapitbahay tuwing tag-ulan.
The neighbor plants fragrant plants every rainy season. (habitual incompleted actor voice; neutral)
Saan ninyo itatanim ang bagong puno ng abokado?
Where will you plant the new avocado tree? (interrogative contemplated conveyance voice; neutral)
The question asks for the location but keeps the tree as pivot because itatanim selects ang bagong puno ng abokado. A saan question does not automatically require locative voice; voice follows the role being selected in the clause.
Taniman and tamnan: select the cultivated site
Locative voice makes the affected ground, bed, container, or other site the pivot. The crop takes ng, and a stated planter also takes an ng-series form.
Tinaniman ng mga boluntaryo ng mga punong narra ang gilid ng sapa.
The volunteers planted narra trees along the stream bank. (completed full locative variant; neutral)
Tinatamnan ng pamilya ng luya ang bahaging malapit sa balon.
The family plants ginger in the area near the well. (habitual syncopated locative variant; neutral)
Both taniman β tinaniman β tinataniman β tataniman and tamnan β tinamnan β tinatamnan β tatamnan are accepted in contemporary standard Filipino. The shorter form is not a license to delete -in- or a vowel from other roots. Keep each paradigm coherent: do not create hybrids such as tinamnan β tinataniman while presenting them as a single mechanically generated series. The broader pattern appears under locative -an voice.
Tatamnan ba natin ng gabi ang lupang katabi ng pilapil?
Shall we plant taro on the land beside the rice-field embankment? (interrogative contemplated syncopated locative voice; neutral)
Here ang lupang katabi ng pilapil is the selected site and ng gabi is the planted crop. Translating word for word as βplant taro the landβ obscures the Filipino valency frame; English naturally recasts it as βplant the land with taroβ or βplant taro on the land.β
Matanim: possibility and achieved planting
Potential/result matanim selects the thing whose planting is possible or successfully completed. Its completed form natanim can emphasize that a task was accomplished, especially despite a limit or difficulty.
Natanim namin ang lahat ng usbong bago lumakas ang hangin.
We managed to plant all the shoots before the wind grew stronger. (completed achieved result; neutral)
Hindi matatanim dito ang punong iyon hangga't hindi sapat ang lalim ng hukay.
That tree cannot be planted here until the hole is deep enough. (negative contemplated potential; neutral)
This family does not merely add an English modal can. It also profiles the planted theme and backgrounds the actor. Compare actor-voice Magtatanim kami ng puno βWe will plant a tree,β which keeps the planters prominent.
Nouns, collocations, and figurative growth
Bare tanim can mean a plant or crop: mga tanim sa bakuran βplants in the yard.β Taniman can be a noun for a plantation, field, or cultivated area; context distinguishes that noun from a locative-voice verb. Pananim refers to something cultivated as a crop or to planting material in appropriate contexts.
The metaphor of taking root supports several established combinations. Magtanim ng sama ng loob means to harbor resentment; itanim sa isip means to impress or fix an idea in the mind. In (formal/legal or journalistic) use, magtanim ng ebidensiya means to plant evidence. These meanings are lexicalized enough to be natural, but that does not mean any English figurative use of plant transfers directly.
Ipatanim means to have or direct someone to plant the selected crop, seed, or tree. The causer takes an ng-series form, the person directed can follow sa/kay, and the selected planted theme takes ang. Both prefix-copy ipinapatanim/ipapatanim and root-copy ipinatatanim/ipatatanim occur in contemporary usage.
Ipinatanim ng kooperatiba sa mga kasapi ang mga puno sa gilid ng bukid.
The cooperative had its members plant the trees along the edge of the field. (completed causative/conveyance voice; neutral)
Ayokong magtanim ng sama ng loob, kaya kinausap ko siya nang mahinahon.
I do not want to harbor resentment, so I spoke to them calmly. (figurative; neutral)
βMay ilalagay pa ba tayo sa munting hardin? βOo, magtatanim ako ng tanglad sa tabi ng pader.
βAre we putting anything else in the small garden? βYes, I'll plant lemongrass beside the wall. (neutral exchange)
Notice nang mahinahon in the first example: nang marks the manner of speaking, whereas ng sama ng loob contains the ng phrase marker required by actor-voice magtanim.
Common Mistakes
Giving an actor-voice crop ang marking
β Nagtanim si Melba ang mga punla ng sili sa paso.
Incorrect β nagtanim selects Melba as pivot, so the planted theme takes ng.
β Nagtanim si Melba ng mga punla ng sili sa paso.
Melba planted chili seedlings in a pot. (actor voice; neutral)
Keeping the planter as si with itinanim
β Itinanim si Melba ang mga punla sa paso.
Incorrect β itinanim selects the seedlings, so the personal-name planter takes ni.
β Itinanim ni Melba ang mga punla sa paso.
Melba planted the seedlings in a pot. (conveyance/patient voice; neutral)
Selecting the crop instead of the site with tinamnan
β Tinamnan ng mga boluntaryo ang mga punong narra sa gilid ng sapa.
Incorrect for locative voice β the trees are the planted theme; the selected stream bank must be the ang phrase.
β Tinamnan ng mga boluntaryo ng mga punong narra ang gilid ng sapa.
The volunteers planted narra trees along the stream bank. (syncopated locative voice; neutral)
Dropping sounds in the wrong part of the locative form
β Tinataman ng pamilya ng luya ang lupa sa tabi ng balon.
Incorrect β tinataman is neither the full incompleted form tinataniman nor the accepted syncopated form tinatamnan.
β Tinatamnan ng pamilya ng luya ang lupa sa tabi ng balon.
The family is planting ginger in the ground beside the well. (syncopated locative voice; neutral)

- Magtanim ... ng follows the planter; itanim ... ang follows the planted seed, cutting, or plant.
- Taniman and tamnan are accepted locative variants that select the cultivated site and keep separate coherent paradigms.
- Matanim/natanim presents possible or successfully achieved planting with the planted theme as pivot; ipatanim selects what someone arranges to have planted.
- Bare tanim and noun taniman are distinguished from verbs by syntax and context.
- Established figurative combinations must be learned as lexical extensions, not produced by translating every English use of plant.
