Suppletive and Highly Irregular Verb Families

Strict suppletion uses unrelated forms inside one grammatical system, like English go/went. Contemporary Filipino has little clear verb suppletion of that kind. Its main challenge is highly irregular but historically related stem alternation: kuha → kunin/kinuha, dala → dalhin/dinala, tanim → tamnan/tinamnan beside taniman/tinaniman, and silid → sidlan/sinidlan. The existential opposition may/mayroon ↔ wala is replacement by polarity, but these are not ordinary aspect-conjugated verbs.

That distinction matters. Calling every unexpected form “suppletive” hides patterns; forcing every form through a regular rule invents words. All unlabelled examples are neutral contemporary Filipino.

A Scale from Regular to Suppletive

Polarity replacementexistentialmay/mayroon ↔ walasuppletive-like predicate opposition, not verb aspect
💡
Memorize principal parts when the stem changes: the basic, completed, incompleted, and contemplated forms. The root alone may not predict the surface paradigm.

Kuha: One Family, Several Stem Shapes

Kunin mo ang kahon sa ilalim ng mesa.

Get the box from under the table.

Kinuha ni Rina ang kahon bago nagsara ang opisina.

Rina got the box before the office closed.

Kinukuha pa ng kawani ang mga lumang rekord sa bodega.

The employee is still retrieving the old records from the storeroom.

Kukunin ni Rina ang natitirang kahon bukas.

Rina will get the remaining box tomorrow.

The controlled series cannot be produced by attaching four endings to kunin. Completed and incompleted forms restore kuha, while basic and contemplated forms use kun-/kuku-. Kuhanin is also an accepted dictionary-recorded variant. The compact kunin series remains essential because its stem alternation recurs in high-frequency contemporary usage.

The actor family is different again: kumuha, kumukuha, kukuha select the getter as pivot. A root is a network of constructions, not one irregular English-style verb. The allomorphy guide separates predictable boundary tendencies from changes that must be stored lexically.

Dala and Bili: Contraction in Suffixed Cells

Dalhin ninyo ang mga kumot sa sentro ng paglikas.

Bring the blankets to the evacuation center.

Dinadala ng mga boluntaryo ang malinis na tubig sa mga pamilya.

The volunteers are bringing clean water to the families.

Basic dalhin loses the final a of dala, while completed dinala and incompleted dinadala show it again. Contemplated dadalhin retains the contracted stem and adds first-syllable reduplication; it does not restore the final a.

Bibilhin ng klinika ang bagong palamigan para sa mga bakuna.

The clinic will buy the new cold-storage unit for the vaccines.

The bili family similarly has bilhin, binili, binibili, bibilhin. These are conventional outputs, not permission to delete the final vowel of every vowel-final base.

Tanim, Silid, and Tupad: More Than One Sound Change

Some derivatives show contraction or reordering that is best learned as a full surface form.

Tamnan natin ng kamatis ang bakanteng bahagi ng hardin.

Let us plant tomatoes in the empty part of the garden.

Tinamnan ng mga mag-aaral ng halamang-gamot ang gilid ng paaralan.

The students planted medicinal herbs along the edge of the school.

The syncopated locative family tamnan/tinamnan/tinatamnan/tatamnan selects the planted site as pivot and introduces the crop with ng. The full family taniman/tinaniman/tinataniman/tataniman is also accepted in contemporary standard Filipino. Keep either paradigm internally consistent rather than treating the full form as an error.

Sinidlan ni Pilo ng bigas ang malaking garapon.

Pilo filled the large jar with rice.

Silid → sidlan/sinidlan is highly lexicalized. It should not be generalized into a rule that removes li from arbitrary roots.

Final d can alternate with r before a vowel-initial suffix in established words:

Tuparin natin ang pangakong ibinigay sa mga residente.

Let us fulfill the promise made to the residents.

The family includes tuparin, tinupad, tinutupad, tutuparin. The d/r alternation belongs to particular morphophonemic environments and lexical items; it is not free spelling variation.

True Suppletion Is Limited

The clearest everyday replacement system is existential polarity:

May bakanteng silid pa sa ikalawang palapag.

There is still a vacant room on the second floor.

Walang bakanteng silid sa unang palapag.

There is no vacant room on the first floor.

Wala is not formed by adding a negative affix to may. Yet neither item supplies aspect cells of an ordinary verb. For change into possession or existence, Filipino uses magkaroon; for disappearance or loss, it uses families built on wala, such as mawala/nawala. Their meanings are related but not conjugationally identical.

English speakers may also expect a go/went-style replacement. Filipino pumunta/pumupunta/pupunta is morphologically related throughout; dumating means “arrive,” not a suppletive past of “go.”

💡
Reserve suppletion for genuine replacement. Most difficult Filipino verbs are better described as irregular stem families whose surface cells remain historically and morphologically related.

Voice and Valency Still Govern Irregular Forms

Irregular shape does not suspend marker alignment.

Binigyan ni Celso ng pagkain ang pusang gala.

Celso gave food to the stray cat.

Recipient-pivot binigyan selects ang pusang gala; the actor is ni Celso, and the theme is ng pagkain. The contraction bigay → bigyan affects form, not voice.

Compare theme-pivot ibinigay:

Ibinigay ni Celso sa pusang gala ang natirang pagkain.

Celso gave the leftover food to the stray cat.

The same root supports different derived families. Treating binigyan and ibinigay as irregular synonyms loses their pivot contrast.

Questions, Negation, and a Short Exchange

—Kukunin ba ninyo ang mga kagamitan ngayon? —Hindi pa; dadalhin muna namin ang mga kahon sa trak.

—Will you collect the equipment now? —Not yet; we will first bring the boxes to the truck.

Exclusive namin excludes the questioner. Kukunin and dadalhin remain contemplated under questioning and the sequencing expression muna.

Common Mistakes

❌ Kuhain mo ang susi sa mesa.

Nonstandard in the target patient family — the established careful form is kunin.

✅ Kunin mo ang susi sa tabi ng lampara.

Get the key beside the lamp.

❌ Taniman natin ang pechay ng bakanteng paso.

Incorrect marker alignment for the intended reading — the planted site should be the pivot, and the crop should take ng.

✅ Taniman natin ng pechay ang bakanteng paso.

Let us plant bok choy in the empty pot.

❌ Tinupad-ed ng kompanya ang kasunduan.

Incorrect — tinupad already expresses completed aspect.

✅ Tinupad ng kompanya ang kasunduan bago matapos ang taon.

The company fulfilled the agreement before the year ended.

❌ Wala-ed silang sasakyan noong nakaraang taon.

Incorrect — wala is a fixed negative existential predicate, not an English-style past verb.

✅ Wala silang sasakyan noong nakaraang taon.

They did not have a vehicle last year.

Key Takeaways

  • Strict verb suppletion is limited in Filipino; highly irregular stem alternation is much more important.
  • Store principal parts for families such as kuha, dala, bili, tanim, silid, and tupad.
  • Irregular morphology does not change voice or marker alignment.
  • May/mayroon ↔ wala is a replacement opposition outside ordinary verb aspect.
  • Similar sound changes remain lexically restricted and cannot be extended mechanically.
