Filipino uses may and mayroon to present an entity, event, condition, or available resource. The same existential structure commonly expresses possession: May payong si Lea literally presents an umbrella in relation to Lea and naturally means “Lea has an umbrella.”
May is dependent and directly introduces following material. Mayroon can stand independently, host particles, or link to a possessor and following expression. Neither is a general translation of English have or be, and neither simply locates an already identifiable object.
Core distribution
| Form | Main environment | Example |
|---|---|---|
| may + noun/description | direct existential presentation | May botika sa kanto. |
| may + possessed + possessor | possession as existence | May susi si Lea. |
| mayroon | independent answer or anaphoric “there is one/some” | Mayroon pa. |
| mayroon + ang-pronoun + -ng | linked possession pattern | Mayroon akong tanong. |
| mayroon + particle + -ng + expression | particle intervenes before introduced material | Mayroon pa bang oras? |
| wala/walang | negative existential | Walang oras. |
May directly introduces an entity
May maliit na botika sa tabi ng terminal.
There is a small pharmacy beside the terminal.
May dalawang bakanteng upuan sa unahan.
There are two vacant seats at the front.
The introduced expression follows may without ang or ng. Plural mga, a number, and modifiers can occur inside that expression.
May naghihintay sa iyo sa may pasukan.
Someone is waiting for you near the entrance.
The following material can be verbal. May presents the existence of a waiting person; it does not carry actor voice or aspect itself.
Mayroon can stand independently
—May tsaa pa ba? —Mayroon pa, pero isang tasa na lang.
—Is there any tea left? —There is, but only one cup remains.
Bare may cannot normally serve as the complete answer. Mayroon carries the omitted category supplied by context.
Mayroon sa kusina kung gusto mo pa.
There is some in the kitchen if you want more.
The substance is recoverable from context. The following sa phrase locates the available supply.
When a particle comes before an overt expression, mayroon supports the cluster and takes a linker:
Mayroon pa bang libreng kopya ng gabay?
Is there still a free copy of the guide?
Bang is ba + linker -ng before libreng kopya.
Possession as existence
May ekstrang payong si Lea sa kaniyang sasakyan.
Lea has an extra umbrella in her vehicle.
The umbrella is presented first, and personal si Lea identifies the possessor. Filipino does not make Lea the actor of a transitive “have” verb.
Mayroon akong tanong tungkol sa bagong iskedyul.
I have a question about the new schedule.
Akong is ako + linker -ng, connecting the possessor to tanong. It is not mayroon ako ng tanong.
May oras pa tayo bago magsimula ang pagtatanghal.
We still have time before the performance begins.
Inclusive tayo includes the addressee among those for whom time is available. Exclusive kami would change the participant set.
Existence versus location
May bisikleta sa garahe.
There is a bicycle in the garage.
Nasa garahe ang bisikleta.
The bicycle is in the garage.
The existential introduces a bicycle. The locative predicate nasa locates an identifiable bicycle marked by ang. This is a discourse contrast, not simply English a versus the.
May susi sa mesa.
There is a key on the table.
Nasa mesa ang susi ni Lito.
Lito's key is on the table.
See locative predicates with nasa for location as a clause predicate.
Negative and interrogative counterparts
Walang parmasyang bukas sa ganitong oras.
There is no pharmacy open at this hour.
Wala, not hindi may, negates existence. Parmasyang links the noun to the description bukas.
May gamot pa ba para sa ubo?
Is there still medicine for a cough?
With dependent may, the particle cluster commonly follows the introduced noun phrase. Compare independent Mayroon pa bang gamot...? Both are standard; the second foregrounds continued availability and cleanly hosts the particles.
Variation and register
Meron is a widespread reduced form of mayroon (informal/conversational). It is natural in speech and messages but is usually replaced by mayroon in formal edited prose. Some environments permit both may and mayroon, with differences in independence, rhythm, and information structure rather than truth conditions.
Do not assume that mayroon is merely a “more emphatic may.” It has structural privileges: it can stand alone and can host intervening clitics.
A short exchange
—May pulong ba sa bulwagan mamaya? —Mayroon, pero para lang sa mga kinatawan ng bawat barangay.
—Is there a meeting in the hall later? —There is, but it is only for the representatives of each barangay.
The answer omits pulong because it is recoverable. Mayroon carries the existential assertion independently.
Common Mistakes
❌ May ang bagong klinika sa kanto.
Incorrect — the introduced expression follows may without ang.
✅ May bagong klinika sa kanto.
There is a new clinic on the corner.
❌ Mayroon ako ng mahalagang tanong.
Incorrect — the possessor takes an attached linker, not separate marker ng.
✅ Mayroon akong mahalagang tanong.
I have an important question.
❌ Hindi may pasok sa Lunes.
Incorrect — negative existence uses wala.
✅ Walang pasok sa Lunes.
There are no classes on Monday.
❌ May motorsiklo ang silong.
Wrong for 'The motorcycle is under the house'; this instead misbuilds an existential/possession relation.
✅ Nasa silong ang motorsiklo.
The motorcycle is under the house.
