A Filipino root can support several verb families whose affixes select different event structures and pivots. From sulat, speakers form sumulat, magsulat, sulatin, sulatan, isulat, ipagsulat, magpasulat, and ipasulatβbut these are not interchangeable conjugations of one English verb write. Each family has its own aspect morphology, valency, discourse use, and lexical restrictions.
All unlabelled forms are neutral contemporary Filipino.
One Root, Several Constructions
| Basic form | Pivot | Other core role | Typical function |
|---|---|---|---|
| sumulat | writer | text often ng; recipient sa | perform a writing event |
| magsulat | writer | text often ng | engage in writing; write deliberately |
| sulatin | selected text/content | writer in ng-form | write the selected material |
| sulatan | recipient or writing surface | writer in ng-form | write to/on the selected target |
| isulat | transferred/placed text | writer in ng-form | put the selected content in writing |
| ipagsulat | beneficiary | text commonly ng | write something for the selected person |
| magpasulat | causer | causee in kay/sa-form | have someone write |
| ipasulat | selected text | causer in ng-form; causee kay/sa | have the selected content written |
The table is a map of established tendencies, not a license to force every root into all eight frames.
Actor Voice: Sumulat and Magsulat
Ada wrote to the council about the blocked canal.
Ada wrote three letters while the office was still quiet.
Both forms select the writer as pivot. With sulat, sumulat often profiles a particular act of composition or communication, especially writing to someone, while magsulat readily frames writing as an activity. Contemporary usage overlaps considerably, so this is a lexical tendency rather than a universal -um- versus mag- rule. Each family has its own completed, incompleted, and contemplated cells.
Ada writes to the council whenever there is a problem with the canal.
Ada writes in her journal every night.
The incompleted contrast preserves the same broad lexical perspectives. It cannot be predicted from English write alone.
Patient, Target, and Theme Pivots
Ada wrote the short explanation on the back of the photograph.
Patient sinulat selects the explanation. In this root family, sulatin/sinulat often profiles composition or the resulting text, while isulat/isinulat often profiles content being put into writing or onto a medium. The two uses overlap in contemporary Filipino, so clause context matters. Target-oriented sinulatan instead selects the recipient or surface:
Sinulatan ni Ada ang may-ari tungkol sa tagas sa bubong.
Ada wrote to the owner about the leak in the roof.
Theme-oriented isulat is especially natural when content is placed into a medium or location:
Isulat mo ang numero ng telepono sa unang pahina.
Write the telephone number on the first page.
The ang phrase is not chosen by English definiteness. It is the pivot selected by the derivational family; location, recipient, and actor receive their own markers.
Benefactive and Causative Families
Lino wrote a letter for the grandmother whose eyesight was already poor.
The grandmother is the beneficiary pivot, Lino is the actor, and ng liham is the created theme.
The director had Mina write a summary of the meeting.
The director had Mina write the final announcement before noon.
Ipinasulat selects the announcement as pivot, the director as causer, and Mina as causee.
The Luto Family Confirms the Patternβand Its Limits
Pina cooked vegetables in coconut milk for dinner.
Pina cooked the vegetables in the clay pot.
Pina cooked vegetables in coconut milk for the guests.
The actor, dish, and beneficiary become pivots in different families. Yet not every theoretically imaginable affix-root combination is equally natural. Lutuan can select a cooking place, vessel, or beneficiary-like target depending on context; ipangluto selects an instrument used for cooking. Their meanings must be learned from established clauses, not from a one-word English gloss.
Aspect Belongs to Each Family
| Family | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|
| writer actor, -um- | sumulat | sumusulat | susulat |
| writing actor, mag- | nagsulat | nagsusulat | magsusulat |
| text patient, -in | sinulat | sinusulat | susulatin |
| recipient/target, -an | sinulatan | sinusulatan | susulatan |
| causer actor, magpa- | nagpasulat | nagpapasulat | magpapasulat |
Switching affixes means switching paradigms. A learner cannot take sinulat and create its contemplated form by adding an English future word or by simply restoring the same surface pieces.
Questions, Negation, and a Short Exchange
βWhom will you write to about the missing package? βI will write to the warehouse manager.
The selected recipient is the pivot of susulatan. The actor appears as mo/ko.
Ruel did not have the secretary write it; he wrote the report himself.
Negated completed nagpasulat denies a causative event, not writing in general.
Lexical Restrictions and Accepted Variation
Some roots freely participate in several high-frequency families; others do not. Even with sulat, sumulat and magsulat overlap in ways that vary by context and speaker, while ipagsulat is less frequent than ordinary sumulat para sa in casual conversation. Both can be grammatical, but register and information structure determine naturalness.
Do not treat rare but structurally possible forms as the neutral default. The productive-versus-lexicalized guide explains how lexical frequency constrains apparently regular derivation.
Common Mistakes
β Sinulat si Ada ng paliwanag sa konseho.
Incorrect patient-voice alignment β the written explanation, not Ada, is the pivot of sinulat.
Ada wrote the explanation for the council.
Wrong pivot for the intended meaning β sinulatan selects a recipient or surface, not the text.
Ada wrote the explanation on the back of the photograph before it was posted.
β Nagpasulat-ed ang direktor kay Mina ng buod.
Incorrect β nagpasulat already expresses completed aspect.
The director had Mina write a summary before the meeting ended.
Incorrect β the created text takes ng while the beneficiary is the ang pivot.
Lino wrote a letter for his grandmother while she was resting.
Key Takeaways
- One root can support multiple constructions, not merely multiple spellings of one verb.
- Affixes select actor, patient, target, theme, beneficiary, causer, or causee perspectives.
- Every derived family has its own aspect paradigm and marker alignment.
- Rich families such as sulat and luto still have lexical and register restrictions.
- Choose the intended event structure and pivot before choosing the affix.
