The root tanggal centers on separation: taking an item off, removing it from a place, or becoming detached. Magtanggal selects the remover, tanggalin selects what is removed, tanggalan selects the source or possessor from which something is removed, and matanggal presents the item as able to come off or as becoming detached. Bare tanggal can describe the resulting state “off” or “removed.”
English normally uses remove, take off, or come off and relies on subject–object order. Filipino divides these meanings across a root-centered voice network. The marker frame is part of each verb: memorizing only “tanggal means remove” does not tell you whether the removed item, the source, or the remover is the pivot.
Core forms and functions
All unmarked forms below are (neutral). Their columns express aspect rather than English tense.
| Family | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Typical pivot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| actor voice | magtanggal | nagtanggal | nagtatanggal | magtatanggal | remover; removed item normally takes ng |
| patient/undergoer voice | tanggalin | tinanggal | tinatanggal | tatanggalin | selected item, mark, part, or person removed |
| source-oriented -an voice | tanggalan | tinanggalan | tinatanggalan | tatanggalan | selected source, surface, container, or possessor cleared of something |
| stative/potential | matanggal | natanggal | natatanggal | matatanggal | item that comes off, can be removed, or ends up detached |
| causative actor voice | magpatanggal | nagpatanggal | nagpapatanggal | magpapatanggal | person arranging or requesting a removal |
| causative patient voice | ipatanggal | ipinatanggal | ipinatatanggal / ipinapatanggal | ipatatanggal / ipapatanggal | selected item whose removal someone arranges or requests |
Incompleted tinatanggal can describe removal in progress, repeated removal, or a standing practice. Contemplated tatanggalin often receives a future interpretation, but it marks an unrealized event rather than an English future tense by itself.
Magtanggal and tanggalin: remover versus removed item
Actor-voice magtanggal selects the person doing the removing with ang/si. The removed item takes ng, and its source can follow sa. Patient-voice tanggalin selects an identifiable removed item with ang; its remover takes an ng-series form.
Sima removed thick ribbon from the boxes. (completed actor voice; neutral)
Sima removed the thick ribbon from the boxes. (completed patient voice; neutral)
The physical event may be identical. The first clause tracks si Sima; the second tracks ang makapal na laso. The change from si ... ng to ni ... ang follows voice, not a simple definite-versus-indefinite article rule. Compare the general actor-voice pattern with patient voice.
The children take off their shoes before entering the room. (habitual incompleted actor voice; neutral)
Tatanggalin mo ba ang lumang kurtina bago pinturahan ang dingding?
Will you remove the old curtain before painting the wall? (interrogative contemplated patient voice; neutral)
With clothing, tanggalin is broad and useful, but more specific roots remain natural: hubarin ang damit “take off clothing” and alisin ang sombrero “remove the hat.” Filipino does not require one root wherever English uses take off.
Tanggalan: select what is cleared or deprived
Tanggalan selects the source, surface, container, or possessor from which something is taken away. The removed material takes ng, while a deliberate remover also takes an ng-series form.
Berto removed the old labels from all the jars. (completed source-oriented voice; neutral)
Here ang lahat ng garapon is the selected source and ng lumang tatak identifies what was removed. English makes the labels its direct object; Filipino tinanggalan instead follows the jars as entities whose state has changed.
The mechanic will remove the rust from the hinge before oiling it. (contemplated source-oriented voice; neutral)
With a person, tanggalan can mean deprive or strip someone of a possession, rank, privilege, or body part. Context and register matter: tanggalan ng lisensiya is common in administrative discussion, while official writing may prefer bawiin ang lisensiya when revocation is specifically meant.
A company that repeatedly violates the rules may have its permit withdrawn. (formal/administrative source-oriented voice)
Matanggal and bare tanggal: detachment and result
Matanggal selects the thing that can come off, is successfully removed, or becomes detached without foregrounding a deliberate actor. Completed natanggal often suggests an accidental or spontaneous result.
A button came off while I was hanging up the coat. (completed unintended result; neutral)
The stain will not come out even though the cloth has been washed several times. (negative potential; neutral)
Contrast Tinanggal ko ang butones, “I removed the button deliberately,” with Natanggal ko ang butones, which can mean “I accidentally pulled the button off.” The ng-form experiencer ko does not turn natanggal into an intentional patient-voice event.
Bare tanggal is a nonverbal predicate describing the result. Filipino needs no overt counterpart of English be:
Tanggal na ang takip ng sisidlan, kaya baka matapon ang sabaw.
The container's lid is already off, so the soup might spill. (result-state predicate; neutral)
Causative requests and arrangements
Magpatanggal selects the person who asks for or arranges a removal; the removed item normally takes ng. Patient-voice ipatanggal instead selects the item whose removal is arranged. These forms are especially common for repairs, grooming, and services in which someone else performs the physical work.
Aya had a plumber remove the broken lock. (completed causative actor voice; neutral)
Aya will have the plumber remove the broken lock tomorrow. (contemplated causative patient voice; neutral)
In both clauses, Aya arranges the work rather than necessarily removing the lock herself. The service provider follows sa (or kay with a singular personal name), while voice determines whether Aya or the lock is the pivot.
Both reduplication patterns occur in contemporary usage. Ipinatatanggal/ipatatanggal repeat the root's first syllable ta-, while ipinapatanggal/ipapatanggal repeat causative pa-. The variants keep the same causative patient-voice frame.
Collocations, extensions, and limits
The last expression means someone lost or was removed from a job; it does not by itself specify the circumstances or who made the decision. Voluntary resignation is normally nagbitiw sa trabaho or, in less formal speech, umalis sa trabaho.
—Bakit wala na si Olan sa talaan? —Tinanggal daw ang pangalan niya dahil doble ang pagkakalista.
—Why is Olan no longer on the list? —They say his name was removed because it was listed twice. (neutral exchange)
The omitted actor in tinanggal daw is natural when unknown or unimportant. Daw follows the consonant-final verb, in accordance with the careful daw/raw distribution.
English remove is broader than this root. Removing someone from danger is often ilayo or iligtas; removing a mathematical term may be alisin; removing a public official can be alisin sa tungkulin or tanggalin sa puwesto, depending on register. The everyday question Anong tanggal ngayon? uses tanggal for a calendar date in (informal) speech; that homonymous noun does not belong to the removal paradigm and careful writing often prefers petsa.
Common Mistakes
Giving an actor-voice item ang marking
Incorrect — magtanggal selects Sima as pivot, so the removed item takes ng.
Sima removed thick ribbon from the box. (actor voice; neutral)
Keeping the remover as si with tinanggal
Incorrect — tinanggal selects the ribbon, so the personal-name remover takes ni.
Sima removed the thick ribbon from the box. (patient voice; neutral)
Selecting the removed material instead of the source with tanggalan
Incorrect for source-oriented tinanggalan — the jars, not the removed labels, are the selected ang phrase.
Berto removed the old labels from the jars. (source-oriented voice; neutral)
Using deliberate tinanggal for something that came loose
❌ Tinanggal ang butones habang umiikot ang makinang panlaba.
Incorrect for an unintended detachment — tinanggal implies a remover acting on the button.
✅ Natanggal ang butones habang umiikot ang makinang panlaba.
The button came off while the washing machine was running. (completed unintended result; neutral)
