Verb Reference: suot

The root suot covers clothing and other things placed on the body. Its family distinguishes an event—putting something on—from the resulting state—wearing it. English uses wear rather loosely for both, so learners often choose a Filipino form whose aspect and participant frame do not match the intended scene.

The central network includes actor-voice magsuot, benefactive/instrumental-voice isuot, locative-voice suotan, stative nakasuot, and bare-predicate suot. The suotin patient/undergoer-voice family is also widespread in contemporary usage. These are not interchangeable tense forms: they differ in voice, event structure, and what the clause treats as its pivot.

The i- family is a conventional member of the broader benefactive/instrumental voice domain: the thing applied to the body becomes the ang-marked pivot. It must be learned with the root; a broad patient/undergoer label alone cannot predict every lexical choice.

Magsuot: the wearer as pivot

Magsuot selects the wearer and normally marks the clothing with ng. Its aspect can present a completed act of dressing, an ongoing or customary practice, or a contemplated act.

Aya put on a thick jacket before going outside.

I wear glasses when reading small print.

We will wear white shirts at the ceremony tomorrow.

The completed sentence foregrounds the act of putting on the jacket. The incompleted form can describe a repeated wearing practice, not only an action happening at this instant.

Isuot: benefactive/instrumental voice with the item as pivot

Use the benefactive/instrumental i- family when a particular garment or accessory is the pivot. The wearer or agent is ng-marked, and the body location may be expressed with sa.

Aya put on the thick jacket before she went outside.

Put the marked glove on your left hand.

The first sentence forms a controlled contrast with Nagsuot si Aya ng...: the event is comparable, but the second tracks the identifiable jacket. In the command, ang guwantes is the selected item and sa kaliwang kamay is its destination on the body.

💡
For the event “put on,” choose between actor-voice magsuot and benefactive/instrumental-voice isuot. For the state “be wearing,” choose nakasuot or a bare suot predicate.

Nakasuot and suot: the resulting state

Nakasuot profiles a wearer as being in the state of having clothing or an accessory on. It does not simply mean that the putting-on action is in progress.

This event/state distinction is part of the wider pattern covered in aspect with stative predicates.

The guard at the entrance is wearing a green uniform.

The wearer ang bantay is the pivot, and the garment is ng-marked. A bare suot predicate commonly identifies someone's clothing:

He is wearing the barong that his grandfather gave him.

Ano ang suot mo sa pagtatanghal mamaya?

What are you wearing for the performance later?

English present progressive is wearing does not require an incompleted Filipino action verb. The clothing state is naturally expressed by nakasuot or suot.

The surface form nakasuot can also be the completed member of ability makasuot when context supplies an achievement reading. The two analyses are not interchangeable: a continuing clothing state differs from successfully managing to put something on.

At last, she managed to put on boots even though her foot was swollen.

I cannot wear shoes because my foot is swollen.

Accepted variation: isuot and suotin

The suotin family—sinuot, sinusuot, susuotin—is widespread in contemporary Filipino and often overlaps with the isuot family. Some speakers and edited contexts strongly prefer isuot for the action of putting an item onto the body; other speakers use both freely or prefer suotin in ordinary speech. Treat suotin as accepted variation, not as a random error, while maintaining one consistent pattern within a beginner paradigm.

He put on the old hat even though it was already faded.

The equivalent Isinuot niya ang lumang sombrero... is also natural. Exact preference varies by speaker and context; neither family licenses changing the actor to an ang-form pronoun when the item remains the pivot.

💡
Recognize both isinuot and sinuot in contemporary usage. For your own beginner production, keeping one complete family consistent makes its aspect pattern easier to control.

Questions, negation, and commands

Questions preserve the normal voice frame:

Isusuot mo ba ang sapatos na ito sa kasal?

Will you wear these shoes to the wedding?

Mo is the ng-form actor, while ang sapatos na ito is the selected item. With huwag, use a basic form for a negative command.

Do not wear loose sleeves while operating a machine.

In a short exchange, the state/event distinction remains visible:

—Bakit hindi mo suot ang kuwintas? —Isusuot ko kapag nagsimula na ang programa.

—Why aren't you wearing the necklace? —I'll put it on when the program starts.

The question asks about the current state; the reply promises a future action on the selected necklace.

Suotan and causative clothing frames

Locative-voice suotan selects the person or body location being dressed, while the garment takes ng.

Mara put a jacket on the child before they went outside.

Ipasuot adds a causer and an instructed or assisted wearer. It selects the garment as the pivot; the person made or told to wear it is marked with sa.

The nurse had the child put on clean clothes before the child went home.

Causative pagsuotin instead selects the person required or instructed to wear something.

The teacher made the children put on hats before they went out into the sun.

These causatives can describe instruction or assistance, depending on context. They do not necessarily imply physical force.

Common Mistakes

❌ Nagsuot si Aya ang itim na amerikana.

Incorrect — actor voice requires the clothing to be ng-marked.

✅ Nagsuot si Aya ng itim na amerikana.

Aya put on a black coat.

❌ Isinuot siya ng itim na amerikana.

Incorrect for 'she put on the black coat' — benefactive/instrumental voice selects the coat, not the wearer.

✅ Isinuot niya ang itim na amerikana.

She put on the black coat.

Awkward for a continuous resulting state; it foregrounds repeated or ongoing acts of putting on.

✅ Nakasuot siya ng sombrero mula kaninang umaga.

He or she has been wearing a hat since earlier this morning.

❌ Huwag mong isinuot ang maruming medyas.

Incorrect — a negative command takes the basic form, not the completed form.

✅ Huwag mong isuot ang maruming medyas.

Do not put on the dirty socks.

Key Takeaways

  • Magsuot selects the wearer; isuot and widespread suotin select the item; suotan selects the person or body location dressed.
  • Nakasuot and bare suot profile the state of wearing, not merely an ongoing putting-on action.
  • In an achievement context, nakasuot can instead be the completed ability form of makasuot.
  • Aspect contrasts live inside each productive family; voice determines the marker frame.
  • Ipasuot selects the item in a caused-wearing event; pagsuotin selects the instructed wearer.
  • Learn the full root-centered network because English wear does not preserve these event/state and voice distinctions.
