Verb Reference: luto

The root luto covers cooking and the state of being cooked. Its common branches select the cook (magluto), the dish (lutuin), a beneficiary (ipagluto), or the person arranging the cooking (magpaluto). A further maluto family presents food as reaching the cooked state. English cook can appear in all of these settings without showing the Filipino participant frame.

All unlabelled forms below are neutral contemporary Filipino. Read the table as a network of aspect-and-voice families, not as person-based conjugations.

The patient family changes final o to u before suffixal -in: lutuin, lulutuin. The completed and incompleted forms restore o: niluto, niluluto. An invented form such as lutoin is not standard.

Some speakers use root-reduplicating ipinaluluto/ipaluluto beside ipinapaluto/ipapaluto in the causative theme family. Contemporary usage also widely has shorter (informal) pinaluto for completed ipinaluto. The full ipa-/ipina- forms make the causative theme frame clearest in careful writing.

💡
Three similar-looking i-forms select different roles: lutuin ang dish, ipagluto ang beneficiary, and ipaluto ang dish to be cooked by someone else.

Cook Pivot versus Dish Pivot

Actor-voice magluto selects the cook. The dish or food prepared normally appears as a non-pivot ng phrase.

Dalisay cooked banana blossom in coconut milk for lunch. (cook pivot)

Patient-voice lutuin selects the dish; the cook becomes an ng/ni phrase.

Dalisay cooked the banana blossom in coconut milk for lunch. (dish pivot)

This is a controlled voice contrast. The patient-voice sentence is not merely a passive: its most natural English translation remains active, while Filipino presents the dish as the discourse pivot.

I will cook the mung beans over low heat so they do not stick to the bottom of the pot.

Contemplated lulutuin presents the cooking as not yet begun. Sa mahinang apoy describes the cooking setting; do not force an English preposition onto the voice suffix.

Beneficiary Pivot: ipagluto

Benefactive ipagluto selects the person for whom food is prepared. The cook takes an ng/ni form, and the dish itself normally remains ng-marked.

Dalisay cooked rice porridge for the guard who had worked all night.

The beneficiary is ang bantay. Both can describe the same kindness, but they organize it differently.

—Who will you cook dinner for? —My sibling who has just arrived from a trip.

The question word sino asks for the beneficiary pivot. Although English asks with for whom, Filipino need not place that participant in a para sa phrase when benefactive voice selects it.

💡
In ipagluto, the food is not the pivot: ipagluto ng sopas ang maysakit. To select the soup, use lutuin ang sopas or causative ipaluto ang sopas, depending on who cooks.

Reaching a Cooked State

Maluto presents the dish as reaching the desired cooked state without selecting a cook. It is useful when heat, time, or readiness matters more than human agency.

The sweet potatoes had not finished cooking when the stove ran out of gas.

This does not mean that someone failed to perform the action expressed by niluto. Naluto ang kamote profiles the result; Niluto ni Aning ang kamote profiles a completed action with an expressed cook.

The fish will finish cooking in the remaining heat if you cover the pan.

Bare luto can itself be a result-state predicate:

Luto na ang ulam; maaari na natin itong ihain.

The dish is cooked now; we can serve it.

No equivalent of English is appears. The state predicate comes first, which is the neutral Filipino order. See stative and eventive readings.

Arranging for Someone Else to Cook

Magpaluto adds a causing or arranging participant and selects that arranger. A cook or service provider, when expressed, normally appears with kay/sa.

Pilar had Mang Celso cook noodles for the association meeting. (arranger pivot)

To select the dish being commissioned, use ipaluto:

Ipinaluto ni Pilar kay Mang Celso ang pansit para sa pulong ng samahan.

Pilar had Mang Celso cook the noodles for the association meeting. (commissioned dish pivot)

Again, English hides the voice contrast. Si Pilar + ng pansit becomes ni Pilar + ang pansit, while kay Mang Celso remains the causee. Depending on context, causative pa- can express requesting, commissioning, allowing, or making—not a single invariant English verb.

Collocations, Recent Completion, and Register

Common combinations include magluto ng almusal, lutuin sa mahinang apoy, maluto nang husto, lutong-bahay “home-cooked,” pagluluto “cooking as an activity,” and hilaw pa/luto na “still raw/already cooked.” Standard spelling keeps the hyphen in lexicalized lutong-bahay.

Recent-perfective kaluluto highlights extreme recency and commonly appears with lang/lamang. Widespread kakaluto is also accepted.

Dalisay has just cooked the soup, so let's wait for it to cool a little.

The form describes a just-completed event; it does not replace ordinary completed niluto in every past context.

Common Mistakes

Inventing an -um- actor form

Incorrect for neutral contemporary Filipino—the established cook-pivot family is magluto.

Dalisay cooked vegetables for lunch.

Keeping the cook as pivot with patient voice

❌ Niluto si Dalisay ang ginataang gulay.

Incorrect for ‘Dalisay cooked the vegetables’—niluto selects the dish, so the cook takes ni.

Dalisay cooked the vegetables in coconut milk before the guests arrived.

Selecting the food with benefactive ipagluto

Incorrect for the intended benefactive-voice frame—ipinagluto selects the beneficiary, not the food.

Dalisay cooked rice porridge for the night guard.

Confusing an action with a resulting state

Incomplete for the intended ‘the sweet potatoes finished cooking’ reading—niluto normally implies a cook even if omitted.

The sweet potatoes finished cooking after twenty minutes.

Key Takeaways

  • Magluto selects the cook; lutuin selects the dish.
  • Ipagluto selects a beneficiary and leaves the food ng-marked.
  • Maluto presents food as reaching a cooked state without selecting a cook.
  • Magpaluto selects an arranger; ipaluto selects the dish that someone is commissioned or caused to cook.
  • The useful unit is the root-centered luto network with its aspect forms and marker frames, not one English gloss cook.
