The root lipad covers flight and several figurative extensions. Lumipad selects a creature or object that flies, magpalipad selects someone who launches or operates something, and paliparin selects what that person makes or allows to fly. English uses fly both in “the bird flew” and “she flew the kite,” but Filipino changes the event structure and marker frame.
All unlabelled forms below are neutral contemporary Filipino. The causative voice guide develops the causer–causee distinction in greater depth.
Compact Root-Family Table
| Family and function | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| flyer pivot, actor voice | lumipad | lumipad | lumilipad | lilipad |
| ability/opportunity to fly | makalipad | nakalipad | nakakalipad | makakalipad |
| launcher/operator pivot | magpalipad | nagpalipad | nagpapalipad | magpapalipad |
| caused flyer pivot | paliparin | pinalipad | pinapalipad | papaliparin |
| route traversed by air, (formal/literary) | liparin | nilipad | nililipad | liliparin |
The basic and completed forms of the -um- family are both lumipad. A directive such as Lumipad ka na and a report such as Lumipad siya kanina differ through clause type and context. By contrast, lilipad explicitly presents the flight as not yet begun.
Some speakers use root-reduplicating pinalilipad/paliliparin beside pinapalipad/papaliparin. Both patterns occur in contemporary speech. The pa--reduplicating series in the table is a practical production model; recognize the other without treating it as a different English tense.
The Flyer as Pivot
With lumipad, the flying participant takes an ang/si form. A source or destination normally appears in a sa phrase or with a directional expression.
The egrets flew away from the fishpond when thunder began.
The birds initiate or undergo their own movement; no separate operator is introduced.
The small airplane was still flying above the village when the power went out.
Incompleted lumilipad receives a past-progressive interpretation from nang mawalan ng kuryente. It does not itself mean English was flying.
The kite cannot fly high when there is almost no wind.
Makalipad describes ability or favorable circumstances. The adverbial phrase uses nang mataas; ng would not mark manner here.
Operating or Launching Something
Magpalipad selects the person responsible for causing flight. The flying thing is normally a non-pivot ng phrase.
Isko flew a yellow kite by the shore before the wind grew stronger. (operator pivot)
To select the flying thing instead, use the paliparin family:
Pinalipad ni Isko ang dilaw na saranggola sa tabing-dagat bago lumakas ang hangin.
Isko flew the yellow kite by the shore before the wind grew stronger. (kite pivot)
The pair holds the event constant. Neither is automatically more “active” in meaning. Voice organizes which participant anchors the clause.
The causative family can express launch, release, operate, or permit flight according to the participant involved.
Let the pigeon fly when there are no cats left on the roof.
With an animal, the directive naturally favors “let/release.” With an aircraft or kite, the same family more often describes launching or operating. The affix does not encode one fixed degree of control.
The association will launch paper lanterns after the program.
Contemplated magpapalipad presents the planned launching as unbegun. The actor pivot is the association, while the lanterns remain ng-marked.
Routes, Figurative Uses, and Register
Patient liparin can select an air route, distance, or region traversed in flight. It is much less frequent in ordinary conversation than lumipad papunta sa... and is most at home in (formal/journalistic) or (literary) contexts.
The rescue aircraft flew the Basco–Tuguegarao route despite the cloudy weather. (formal/journalistic)
This is a genuine patient frame, not a general replacement for lumipad. In everyday speech, Lumipad ang eroplanong pansagip mula Basco patungong Tuguegarao is more neutral.
Flight also motivates familiar figurative language. Lumipad ang oras means time passed surprisingly quickly; mataas ang lipad ng pangarap describes lofty ambition and can be admiring or skeptical according to context.
Time seemed to fly while the friends, who had not seen one another for a long time, talked.
This figurative lumipad still has a single selected pivot, ang oras. It does not license every English idiom containing fly; learn extensions as established Filipino expressions.
A Short Exchange
—Will the balloon float away if we tie it here? —No, the string is too heavy.
The question selects the balloon as the flyer and uses contemplated lilipad. If the speakers deliberately release it, the causative question would be Papaliparin ba natin ang lobo? “Will we let the balloon fly?” That small difference adds a causer and changes the marker frame.
Recent-perfective kalilipad “has just flown/departed” often occurs with lang/lamang. Widespread kakalipad is also accepted. Both emphasize extreme recency rather than forming another ordinary completed-aspect cell.
Common Mistakes
Using the intransitive family for an operator plus object
❌ Lumipad si Isko ng saranggola sa dalampasigan.
Incorrect for ‘Isko flew a kite’—lumipad selects the flyer and does not license this operator-plus-object frame.
✅ Nagpalipad si Isko ng saranggola sa dalampasigan.
Isko flew a kite on the seashore.
Keeping actor-voice markers with a selected flying thing
❌ Pinalipad si Isko ang dilaw na saranggola.
Incorrect for the intended kite-pivot clause—the operator takes ni.
Isko flew the yellow kite before it began to drizzle.
Treating an ability form as ordinary contemplated aspect
Wrong if the intended meaning is simply scheduled departure—makakalipad foregrounds ability or opportunity.
The airplane will fly at seven according to the schedule.
Using ng for manner
Incorrect—mababa describes manner or height and requires nang.
The birds fly low before a storm.
Key Takeaways
- Lumipad selects the flyer; magpalipad selects an operator, launcher, or person permitting flight.
- Paliparin selects the creature or thing caused or allowed to fly.
- Makalipad adds ability or opportunity and is not a simple future form.
- Liparin can select an air route, but it is mainly formal, journalistic, or literary.
- Learn the lipad family through event structure and marker frames, not a single English translation fly.
