The root hugas covers washing with water or another cleaning liquid. Maghugas ng selects the washer, while hugasan ang selects what is washed. Further families select an item used for washing, present the washing as possible or successfully completed, or assign the task to somebody else.
English mainly changes word order—“Mila washed the bowls” or “have Joel wash the bowls.” Filipino changes affixes and markers because each construction selects a different pivot. The useful unit is therefore the whole hugas network, not one translation plus tense endings.
Core forms and functions
All forms below are (neutral) unless labeled otherwise.
| Family | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Typical pivot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| actor voice | maghugas | naghugas | naghuhugas | maghuhugas | washer; item washed takes ng |
| patient/undergoer voice | hugasan | hinugasan | hinuhugasan | huhugasan | selected body part, food, garment, utensil, or surface washed |
| potential/result patient voice | mahugasan | nahugasan | nahuhugasan | mahuhugasan | thing washable or successfully washed |
| instrumental voice | ipanghugas | ipinanghugas | ipinanghuhugas | ipanghuhugas | selected instrument or material used for washing |
| causative, selected item | ipahugas | ipinahugas | ipinapahugas | ipapahugas | selected item someone has another person wash |
| causative, selected washer | paghugasin | pinaghugas | pinaghuhugas | paghuhugasin | person directed or required to wash |
Do not manufacture hugasin, hinugas, or huhugasin by treating hugas as an ordinary -in verb. The established selected-item family is hugasan–hinugasan–hinuhugasan–huhugasan.
Maghugas and hugasan
Actor-voice maghugas selects the washer with ang/si; the washed item takes ng. Patient-voice hugasan selects the washed item with ang, while the washer takes an ng-series form.
Naghugas si Mila ng mga mangkok pagkatapos ng hapunan.
Mila washed bowls after dinner. (completed actor voice; neutral)
Hinugasan ni Mila ang mga mangkok pagkatapos ng hapunan.
Mila washed the bowls after dinner. (completed patient voice; neutral)
The two sentences may report the same event. The first follows Mila and does not present the bowls as the discourse pivot. The second follows the identifiable set of bowls. This is a voice-and-marker contrast, not a simple active–passive opposition.
Naghuhugas ng kamay ang mga bata bago kumain.
The children wash their hands before eating. (habitual incompleted actor voice; neutral)
Huhugasan ko ang mga ubas bago ko ilagay sa mangkok.
I will wash the grapes before putting them in the bowl. (contemplated patient voice; neutral)
With body parts, both frames are natural: maghugas ng kamay selects the washer, while hugasan ang mga kamay selects the hands. Possessors are often recoverable, so Filipino need not repeat an English-style possessive in every hygiene instruction.
Mahugasan: possible or achieved washing
The ma-...-an family selects what can be washed or what was successfully washed. The person responsible, when expressed, takes an ng form.
Nahugasan namin ang lahat ng baso bago dumating ang mga bisita.
We managed to wash all the glasses before the guests arrived. (completed result; neutral)
Mahuhugasan pa ang maputik na pantalon kung babanlawan agad.
The muddy trousers can still be washed clean if they are rinsed immediately. (contemplated potential; neutral)
Nahugasan does not guarantee perfect cleanliness; it profiles successful completion of washing in context. A speaker can add pero may mantsa pa rin “but there is still a stain.”
Ipanghugas: select the washing instrument
Ipanghugas makes the tool, material, or cleaning substance the pivot. What is washed generally appears in an ng phrase after the verb.
Ipinanghugas ni Raul ng mga bote ang mahabang sipilyo.
Raul used the long brush to wash the bottles. (completed instrumental voice; neutral)
Aling panlinis ang ipanghuhugas natin ng sahig sa kusina?
Which cleaning product will we use to wash the kitchen floor? (interrogative contemplated instrumental voice; neutral)
The selected instrument is ang mahabang sipilyo or interrogative aling panlinis. English promotes the washer as subject, but Filipino can select the instrument through instrumental voice.
Ipahugas and paghugasin: two causative viewpoints
Ipahugas selects the item whose washing is delegated. The person asked to wash it normally takes sa/kay.
Ipinahugas ni Cora kay Jun ang makapal na kurtina.
Cora had Jun wash the thick curtain. (selected-item causative; neutral)
Ipapahugas ko sa tagalaba ang mga kumot sa Sabado.
I will have the laundry worker wash the blankets on Saturday. (contemplated selected-item causative; neutral)
Paghugasin instead selects the person required or instructed to wash. The items washed take ng.
Pinaghugas ng tagapangasiwa ng mga tasa ang mga boluntaryo.
The coordinator made the volunteers wash the cups. (selected-washer causative; neutral)
The repeated ng phrases are structurally different: ng tagapangasiwa is the causer and ng mga tasa is the non-pivot washed item. Word order and context keep them apart. If clarity suffers, recast the sentence rather than changing either phrase to ang.
Noun uses and fixed expressions
Bare hugas is a washing, wash, or wash water in compounds. Paghuhugas names the ongoing or habitual activity. Hugas-kamay literally means handwashing and figuratively means denying or abandoning responsibility; the figurative sense is usually critical.
Hugas-kamay lamang ang biglang pahayag ng kontratista, ayon sa mga residente.
According to the residents, the contractor's sudden statement merely avoided responsibility. (figurative; neutral public discourse)
This figurative compound is established Filipino usage, but it is not equivalent to every English phrase about clean hands. Ordinary hygiene uses paghuhugas ng kamay.
—Nahugasan mo na ba ang lalagyan? —Hindi pa; binababad ko muna.
—Have you washed the container already? —Not yet; I am soaking it first. (neutral exchange)
Common Mistakes
Giving an actor-voice item ang marking
❌ Maghugas ka ang mga tasa bago umalis.
Incorrect — maghugas selects the washer, so the washed items take ng.
✅ Maghugas ka ng mga tasa bago umalis.
Wash the cups before leaving. (actor-voice command; neutral)
Keeping the washer as a si phrase with hinugasan
❌ Hinugasan si Mila ang mga mangkok.
Incorrect — hinugasan selects the bowls, so the personal-name washer takes ni.
✅ Hinugasan ni Mila ang mga mangkok.
Mila washed the bowls. (patient voice; neutral)
Inventing an -in patient family
❌ Hugasin mo ang mga ubas bago ihain.
Incorrect in contemporary standard Filipino — the established basic patient form is hugasan.
✅ Hugasan mo ang mga ubas bago ihain.
Wash the grapes before serving them. (patient-voice command; neutral)
Mixing the item-selecting and washer-selecting causatives
❌ Ipahugas mo ang bunso ng mga plato.
Incorrect — this combines item-selecting ipahugas with the ng-marked task of the selected-washer frame.
✅ Paghugasin mo ng mga plato ang bunso.
Have the youngest child wash the plates. (selected-washer causative; neutral)
Key Takeaways

- The standard patient series is hugasan–hinugasan–hinuhugasan–huhugasan, not an invented -in series.
- Ipanghugas selects a washing tool or material; mahugasan selects a possible or achieved result.
- Ipahugas selects the delegated item, while paghugasin selects the person required to wash.
- Hugas-kamay has both a literal hygiene sense and a critical figurative sense about avoiding responsibility.
