Aspect in Commands

An ordinary Filipino command uses the basic form of the appropriate verb family: Kumain ka, Basahin mo ito, Ilagay mo rito. This form identifies voice and valency but does not present the event as completed, unfolding, or contemplated in the way an ordinary statement does. The command itself supplies directive mood.

Contemplated-looking forms also occur in commands, especially for regular, repeated, scheduled, or emphatically imposed behavior. Negative commands use huwag, normally followed by a basic form. This system cannot be derived from English tense labels.

The Main Command Patterns

habitual/emphatic commandcontemplated-looking formMag-aaral ka gabi-gabi.requires regular or firmly projected behavior

Huwag kang aalis nang walang paalam.stronger rule, future-oriented warning, or repeated-behavior ban

All unlabelled examples on this page are neutral contemporary Filipino. Tone and particles can make the same morphology gentle, firm, or irritated.

Basic Forms in Ordinary Commands

Umupo ka muna habang kinukuha ko ang iyong rekord.

Sit down for a moment while I get your record. (actor voice; neutral)

Basahin mo muna ang buong paalala bago ka magtanong.

Read the entire notice first before asking a question. (patient voice; neutral)

Iabot mo kay Mina ang asul na folder.

Hand Mina the blue folder. (benefactive/instrumental voice; neutral)

The actor is ka with actor-voice umupo, but mo with patient-voice basahin and conveyance iabot. Command morphology does not cancel the voice system.

For many -um- verbs, the basic and completed forms look identical. Kumain ka is a command built on basic kumain; it does not mean that the commanded action is already completed. Contrast this with a statement such as Kumain ka kanina, where kumain is interpreted as completed from clause type and context.

💡
Do not identify aspect from the word in isolation. Kumain can be basic in a command and completed in a statement; clause type, arguments, particles, and context resolve the analysis.

Basic Versus Habitual or Emphatic Commands

Compare two instructions given about study time tonight:

Mag-aral ka ngayong gabi para sa pagsusulit bukas.

Study tonight for tomorrow's test. (basic command; one relevant study session)

Mag-aaral ka ngayong gabi at gabi-gabi hanggang sa pagsusulit.

You are to study tonight and every night until the test. (habitual/emphatic command)

The second form resembles the contemplated mag-aaral of statements, but command force changes its contribution. It imposes a regular course of action and can sound firm or parental. It is not simply a future tense.

With an explicit frequency expression, contemporary speakers may also use the basic form:

Mag-aral ka gabi-gabi habang papalapit ang pagsusulit.

Study every night as the test approaches. (basic form with explicit habitual adverb; neutral advice)

Thus Mag-aral ka gabi-gabi and Mag-aaral ka gabi-gabi can overlap. The reduplicated form more readily sounds like a standing rule, insistence, or prediction-like directive; the basic form is the safer neutral request. This is genuine variation, not a spelling error.

Prohibitions with Huwag

Use huwag, not hindi, for a direct negative command. With a following pronoun, the linker attaches after the pronoun: huwag kang, huwag kayong, huwag mong, huwag ninyong.

Huwag kang tumakbo sa basang sahig.

Don't run on the wet floor. (actor voice; neutral prohibition)

Huwag mong ilagay sa araw ang gamot.

Do not put the medicine in direct sunlight. (instrumental/conveyance voice; neutral prohibition)

Huwag tayong umalis hangga't hindi dumarating ang huling sasakyan.

Let's not leave until the last vehicle arrives. (inclusive hortative prohibition)

Inclusive tayo includes the addressee. Exclusive kami cannot mean “let us, including you.”

Contemplated morphology is possible after huwag:

Huwag kang mag-iiwan ng pagkain sa mesa tuwing gabi.

Do not keep leaving food on the table at night. (habitual or emphatic prohibition)

The reduplication highlights a projected or recurring behavior under prohibition. In a one-time neutral warning, Huwag kang mag-iwan ng pagkain sa mesa is preferable.

See prohibitives with huwag for its particles and wider modal uses.

💡
Use huwag + basic form as the dependable neutral prohibition. Choose a contemplated form only when a standing rule, recurring behavior, future occasion, or extra insistence is genuinely part of the message.

Particles Change the Social Force

Aspect does not determine politeness. Po, nga, naman, muna, and na shape timing and stance.

Pakibuksan po muna ang bintana bago sindihan ang kalan.

Please open the window first before lighting the stove. (polite request)

Paki- frames an action as a favor, po marks respect, and muna means “first/for now.” The patient ang bintana remains selected by the request construction.

Isara mo na ang pinto; lumalakas na ang ulan.

Close the door now; the rain is getting stronger. (firm but neutral)

Here na marks that the relevant boundary has been reached: now is the time to close it. It does not turn isara into completed aspect.

Nga often softens an affirmative request, while after huwag it may strengthen the prohibition. Naman can sound pleading or mildly reproachful. These effects depend heavily on intonation and relationship.

Commands, Ability, and Modal Scope

Not every derived verb makes a sensible imperative. Ability or accidental forms such as makatulog and makabasag describe capacity or unintended result; commanding someone to possess an ability is usually incoherent. Use a controllable action or a modal expression instead.

Subukan mong matulog nang maaga para makapagpahinga ka.

Try to sleep early so you can rest. (neutral advice)

Basic matulog is the controlled complement of subukan; makapagpahinga expresses attainable ability/result in the purpose clause.

A Short Exchange

—Dadalhin ko ba ang mga kahon ngayon? —Oo, dalhin mo muna ang magagaan.

—Should I carry the boxes now? —Yes, carry the light ones first. (neutral conversation)

The question uses contemplated patient voice dadalhin to ask about the proposed action. The answer uses basic patient-voice dalhin as the command. English may use should and then a bare imperative, but the Filipino contrast is morphological and clause-based.

Common Mistakes

Using hindi for a direct prohibition

❌ Hindi kayong pumasok sa silid habang naglilinis kami.

Incorrect prohibition and clitic placement—hindi does not form the neutral negative command.

✅ Huwag kayong pumasok sa silid habang naglilinis kami.

Do not enter the room while we are cleaning. (neutral)

Removing the voice-bearing affix

❌ Basa mo ang panuto bago pumirma.

Incorrect standard patient-voice command for the intended meaning.

✅ Basahin mo ang panuto bago pumirma.

Read the instructions before signing. (patient voice)

The bare root basa has other uses, but basahin is the standard patient-voice command selecting ang panuto.

Using an actor-form pronoun with patient voice

❌ Basahin ka ang liham nang malakas.

Incorrect—ka would make the addressee an actor-voice pivot, but basahin requires an ng-form actor.

✅ Basahin mo nang malakas ang liham.

Read the letter aloud. (patient voice)

Adding an English tense ending to a habitual command

❌ Mag-aaral-ed ka gabi-gabi hanggang sa pagsusulit.

Incorrect—English -ed never attaches to a Filipino contemplated or habitual command form.

✅ Mag-aaral ka gabi-gabi hanggang matapos ang proyekto.

You are to study every night until the project is finished. (firm habitual directive)

  • Basic and completed forms may look identical, especially in -um- families; clause type distinguishes them.
  • Contemplated-looking commands commonly impose habitual, repeated, future-oriented, or emphatic behavior.
  • Use huwag for prohibitions and preserve natural linker and pronoun placement.
  • Particles and request morphology shape politeness; aspect alone does not.
