Requests and Favors

Filipino requests are not made polite by translating English please word for word. Speakers choose a conventional frameβ€”often puwede ... ba, maaari ... ba, or paki-β€”and then adjust the request with pronouns, voice, particles such as muna and naman, and respectful po. The central skill is therefore learning whole frames, not simply assembling a grammatical command.

Core request frames

FrameMain useRegister
Puwede ka bang + actor voice?ask the addressee to do an activityneutral, conversational
Puwede mo bang + patient voice?ask the addressee to act on a selected thingneutral, conversational
Maaari po ba ninyong + patient voice?careful, respectful request(formal)
paki- + requested actionpresent an action as a favorneutral
imperative + muna/naman/langdirect request softened or limited by context(informal) to neutral
Puwede/Maaari ba akong...?ask permission for the speaker's own actionneutral / (formal)

The voice of the action determines the pronoun form. With actor voice, the addressee is the selected actor and appears as ka. With patient/undergoer voice, a particular object is selected, so the addressee appears as ng-form mo.

Puwede ka bang tumulong sa paglipat ng mga upuan?

Could you help move the chairs?

Puwede mo bang ilipat ang dalawang upuang nasa pasilyo?

Could you move the two chairs in the hallway?

The first request asks for the activity of helping. The second identifies particular chairs as the patient of ilipat. English begins both with could you, so a literal English template does not tell you whether Filipino needs ka or mo.

After puwede, do not choose ka or mo by politeness. Choose it from the voice and participant structure of the following action.

Asking for an action and asking permission

The position of the pronoun distinguishes who is expected to act. Puwede ka bang... asks the listener to act. Puwede ba akong... asks whether the speaker may act. Both are (neutral/conversational).

Puwede ba akong gumamit ng saksakan sa tabi ng mesa?

May I use the outlet beside the table?

Maaari po ba ninyong ipadala ang katibayan bago magtanghali?

Could you send the confirmation before noon? (formal and respectful)

Maaari is common in careful professional speech and public-facing language (formal). Puwede is the everyday choice (neutral/conversational). Either can be respectful; po, respectful kayo/ninyo, tone, and the situation do more social work than the modal alone. See permission with puwede and maaari for their other meanings.

Paki- packages an action as a favor

Paki- attaches to the requested action: pakibukas, pakitingnan, pakisabi. It is a productive request frame, but speakers still learn many frequent combinations as units. It normally addresses a human listener whose identity is understood, so the actor is often omitted.

Pakibukas muna ang ilaw sa kusina.

Please turn on the kitchen light first.

Pakisabi naman kay Liza na nasa ibaba na ako.

Could you please tell Liza that I'm downstairs now?

Here muna sequences the action as something to do first or for now. Naman adds an interpersonal appeal. Neither particle literally means please, and neither guarantees politeness if the request is delivered as an order. The dedicated paki- page explains its syntax in greater depth.

Po marks respect toward the addressee; it is not a translation of English please. A blunt order with po remains structurally direct.

Limiting the burden with particles and context

Speakers often make a favor easier to accept by limiting its duration or timing. Lang means that the requested amount is limited; muna places it before something else; sandali explicitly limits time. These are normal (informal/neutral) resources, not empty decorations.

Hawakan mo lang ito sandali habang kinukuha ko ang susi.

Just hold this for a moment while I get the key.

Kung hindi ka abala, patulong naman sa pag-aayos ng mga pangalan.

If you're not busy, could I get some help arranging the names?

The condition in the second request acknowledges the addressee's availability. For a larger favor, a brief reason can also reduce the sense of entitlement. Piling up po, naman, lang, muna, sana, and a modal is possible, but excessive stacking can sound anxious or manipulative. The advanced page on softening requests shows how each choice changes the interaction.

Negative requests

A direct prohibition uses huwag, not hindi. To make the prohibition a courteous request, place it inside a modal frame. This keeps the desired non-action explicit while leaving room for a response.

Puwede bang huwag muna kayong dumaan sa bagong pinturang bahagi?

Could you please avoid walking through the freshly painted area for now?

This is not merely a negative statement. Huwag tells the addressee not to perform an action; hindi would negate a claim or predicate.

A request in an actual exchange

β€”Puwede mo ba akong samahan sa klinika bukas? β€”Oo, anong oras tayo aalis?

β€”Could you come with me to the clinic tomorrow? β€”Yes. What time are we leaving?

The reply does more than say yes: tayo confirms that speaker and addressee will leave together. This short continuation turns acceptance into a practical commitment.

Common Mistakes

Copying English pronoun order

❌ Puwede ikaw tumawag sa opisina?

Incorrect in standard Filipino β€” the short ang-form pronoun follows the modal, and the linker connects it to the action.

βœ… Puwede ka bang tumawag sa opisina bago mag-alas-singko?

Could you call the office before five o'clock?

Treating po as a free-standing word for please

❌ Po dalhin mo ang mga papeles dito.

Incorrect particle placement, and the construction is still a direct command.

βœ… Maaari po ba ninyong dalhin dito ang mga papeles?

Could you bring the papers here? (formal and respectful)

Using the actor pronoun with patient voice

❌ Puwede ka bang ayusin ang sirang kandado?

Incorrect for the intended patient-voice request β€” ayusin selects the lock, so the actor is ng-form mo.

βœ… Puwede mo bang ayusin ang sirang kandado?

Could you repair the broken lock?

Negating a command with hindi

❌ Paki-hindi buksan ang kahon.

Incorrect β€” paki- does not combine with hindi to form 'please do not.'

βœ… Puwede bang huwag buksan ang kahon hangga't wala si Mara?

Could the box please remain unopened until Mara is here?

Key Takeaways

  • Use puwede ... ba for an everyday modal request and maaari ... ba for a more careful or formal one.
  • Let the following verb's voice determine ka versus mo, or kayo versus ninyo.
  • Use paki- for a conventional favor request; use po to mark respect, not as a word-for-word equivalent of please.
  • Muna, lang, naman, conditions, and reasons change the burden or interpersonal stance.
  • Use huwag, not hindi, when the requested outcome is that someone refrain from acting.
