English sorry and excuse me cover several social actions that Filipino usually distinguishes. Pasensiya na handles many everyday inconveniences, paumanhin fits careful or formal apologies and polite interruptions, patawad asks forgiveness for more serious personal harm, and situation-specific frames such as Makikiraan po may be more natural than any general apology.
A complete apology often has three moves: acknowledge the problem, give a reason without evading responsibility, and offer a repair. Particles such as na, po, and kasi shape the tone, so fluency depends on the whole frame rather than on one vocabulary item.
Core apology and excuse frames
| Frame | Main function | Register and force |
|---|---|---|
| Pasensiya na. | apologizes for an everyday inconvenience or minor fault | neutral conversation |
| Pasensiya na sa + noun/pag-phrase. | names the problem or action | neutral |
| Paumanhin po. | apologizes, interrupts, or requests attention politely | careful, respectful, or (formal) |
| Humihingi ako ng paumanhin. | makes an explicit formal apology | (formal), common in public or written statements |
| Patawad. / Patawarin mo ako. | asks forgiveness for personal harm | emotionally stronger than routine pasensiya |
| Makikiraan po. | asks people to let the speaker pass | polite situation-specific formula |
| Mawalang-galang na po. | precedes a delicate interruption or disagreement | (formal) and deferential |
| Hindi ko sinasadya. | states lack of intention | an explanation, not automatically a complete apology |
Pasensiya na covers ordinary inconvenience
Pasensiya na is the broad everyday apology for lateness, noise, a missed message, or a small imposition. Na helps present the apology as relevant now and often gives the frame a softer, more interactional shape.
Pasensiya na, hindi ko agad nakita ang mensahe mo.
Sorry, I didn't see your message right away. (familiar singular)
Pasensiya na po sa ingay; matatapos na kami bago mag-alas-diyes.
Sorry about the noise; we'll be finished before ten o'clock. (respectful)
After pasensiya na, use sa + noun to name the problem: sa ingay, sa abala, sa pagkaantala. Use sa + pag-phrase to name an action:
Pasensiya na sa paglipat ko ng iskedyul sa huling sandali.
Sorry for changing the schedule at the last minute.
Here ko identifies the actor of paglipat. English for changing does not require Filipino para sa; the conventional apology frame selects sa.
Pasensya is widespread in informal writing and reflects common pronunciation (informal). Careful standard spelling uses pasensiya, which this guide follows.
Paumanhin is careful, formal, or interruptive
Short Paumanhin po can preface a question to a stranger or a respectful interruption. It is less conversationally intimate than Pasensiya na.
Paumanhin po, saan ang tanggapan ng punong-guro?
Excuse me, where is the principal's office? (respectful question to get attention)
Paumanhin po sa pagkaantala ng aming tugon.
We apologize for the delay in our response. (formal/service communication)
For an explicit institutional apology, Filipino can use humingi ng paumanhin, literally framing the act as asking for pardon:
Humihingi kami ng paumanhin sa mga pasaherong naapektuhan ng pagkansela.
We apologize to the passengers affected by the cancellation. (formal public statement; exclusive we)
The phrase names the apologizing party with kami and the basis or affected group through sa. The pragmatics guide to apologies examines responsibility and face management in greater depth.
Patawad asks for forgiveness
Patawad is stronger than a routine apology. It fits betrayal, hurtful words, or another matter where forgiveness is genuinely at stake. Using it for every small inconvenience can sound dramatic.
Patawarin mo ako sa mga salitang nasabi ko kagabi.
Forgive me for the things I said last night. (serious personal apology)
With a respected addressee, combine the respectful pronoun and particle naturally:
Patawarin po ninyo ako kung nasaktan ko kayo sa sinabi ko.
Please forgive me if I hurt you with what I said. (respectful and serious)
The patient of patawarin is ako, while ninyo identifies the person asked to forgive. English word order does not predict the placement of these Filipino pronouns.
Translate “excuse me” by situation
English excuse me is not one Filipino expression. To pass through a crowd, say Makikiraan po. To get attention before a question, Paumanhin po works. Before a delicate formal interruption or disagreement, use Mawalang-galang na po.
Makikiraan po; bababa ako sa susunod na hintuan.
Excuse me, please let me pass; I'm getting off at the next stop. (polite)
Mawalang-galang na po, ngunit may ibang bilang sa opisyal na tala.
With due respect, there is a different figure in the official record. (formal, deferential disagreement)
These formulas do different work. A literal one-word substitution misses whether the speaker needs passage, attention, pardon, or permission to challenge a point.
Give a reason without replacing the apology
Hindi ko sinasadya means “I did not mean to do it.” May inaasikaso kasi ako gives a reason. Either can support an apology, but neither by itself necessarily acknowledges the other person's inconvenience.
Pasensiya na at nabasag ko ang baso. Hindi ko sinasadya, at papalitan ko ito.
I'm sorry I broke the glass. I didn't mean to, and I'll replace it.
The sequence acknowledges the event, explains intent, and offers repair. At + clause works after pasensiya na when the apology concerns a full proposition; sa + noun/pag-phrase packages the problem as a nominal expression.
Kasi commonly introduces an explanation in conversation, but opening only with Kasi ... can sound defensive. Put acknowledgment first when responsibility matters:
Pasensiya na kung ngayon lang ako nakarating. Nasiraan kasi ng gulong ang sinakyan kong traysikel.
Sorry I've only just arrived. The tricycle I took had a flat tire. (everyday explanation)
Negative questions can shift blame
A negative question may be grammatically correct yet pragmatically risky because it can imply that the other person failed to notice something.
Hindi po ba kayo naabisuhan? Paumanhin po; ako ang nagkulang sa pagpapadala ng mensahe.
Weren't you notified? I'm sorry; I failed to send the message properly. (respectful, with explicit responsibility)
The second sentence prevents the question from functioning as blame. Word choice alone does not make an apology sincere; the surrounding clause structure matters.
Responses to an apology
For a minor problem, Ayos lang, Walang problema, or Huwag kang mag-alala can reassure. Acceptance is not obligatory after serious harm, so do not treat these as automatic translations that erase the issue.
—Pasensiya na sa paghihintay. —Ayos lang. Kakaupo ko lang din.
—Sorry to have kept you waiting. —It's fine. I only just sat down too. (informal)
For a more serious apology, a listener may acknowledge it without immediately forgiving: Narinig ko ang sinabi mo. Kailangan ko munang mag-isip. That is a legitimate response, not a grammar failure.
A short exchange
—Paumanhin po, hindi ko naisama ang kalakip sa email. —Kailangan po namin iyon ngayong hapon. —Ipadadala ko po agad at tatawag ako kapag natanggap na ninyo.
—I apologize; I failed to include the attachment in the email. —We need it this afternoon. —I'll send it immediately and call once you have received it. (respectful workplace exchange)
The apology is followed by a concrete repair. Agad signals urgency, while repeated po remains natural because different turns maintain the respectful relationship.
Common Mistakes
Building an English copular sentence around sorry
❌ Ako ay sorry sa nangyari.
Incorrect literal English structure for a neutral Filipino apology — the speaker does not need a copula plus an inserted adjective.
✅ Pasensiya na sa nangyari.
I'm sorry about what happened.
Standalone Sorry is common (informal, code-switched), but Ako ay sorry is not the neutral Filipino frame.
Using para sa after pasensiya
❌ Pasensiya na para sa ingay kagabi.
Incorrect conventional complement — para sa suggests purpose or intended beneficiary rather than the problem apologized for.
✅ Pasensiya na sa ingay kagabi.
Sorry about the noise last night.
Treating paumanhin as an adjective after ako
❌ Paumanhin ako sa pagkaantala.
Incorrect structure — paumanhin is not an adjective predicated directly of ako here.
✅ Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa pagkaantala.
I apologize for the delay. (formal)
Short Paumanhin sa pagkaantala is another valid formal frame.
Misordering pronouns with patawarin
❌ Patawad po ako sa sinabi ko.
Incorrect request frame — ako must be the patient of the verb patawarin, not placed after bare patawad this way.
✅ Patawarin po ninyo ako sa sinabi ko.
Please forgive me for what I said. (respectful)
Key Takeaways
Choose pasensiya na for everyday inconvenience, paumanhin for careful apologies or polite interruption, and patawad/patawarin when genuine forgiveness is at stake. Translate English excuse me according to its purpose: Makikiraan po for passage, Paumanhin po for attention, and Mawalang-galang na po for a deferential formal interruption. Add reasons after acknowledging the problem, and make a repair when the situation calls for one.
