hindi for Predicate Negation

Hindi denies a verbal or nonverbal predicate: an event did not occur, a state does not hold, or an identification is false. It does not serve as a universal English not. Absence and nonexistence use wala, while negative commands use huwag.

Filipino normally places hindi at the beginning of the predicate and lets it host pronouns and enclitic particles. The verb keeps its aspect form; negation does not create a separate negative conjugation.

Shortened di is widespread in conversation and less formal writing; ’di also appears in dialogue and informal transcription. This page models full hindi, the dependable form across registers. The shortened forms do not change the syntax of negation.

Choosing the negative construction

MeaningFormExample pattern
deny an action or statehindiHindi siya umalis
deny identity/classificationhindiHindi ito gamot
nonexistence, absence, lackwalaWalang gamot
negative commandhuwagHuwag kang umalis
no longerhindi naformer state has ended
not yethindi paexpected state has not begun

This division is constructional. English uses not/no/don't in overlapping ways; Filipino distinguishes predicate denial, absence, and prohibition.

Negating verbal predicates

Hindi dumating ang tekniko kahapon.

The technician did not arrive yesterday.

Hindi nagluluto si Mara kapag Linggo.

Mara does not cook on Sundays.

Completed dumating and incompleted nagluluto retain their aspect. Hindi denies the event but does not turn either form into an English tense.

With patient voice, the ng-form actor stays in the early cluster:

Hindi ko natanggap ang ipinadalang kasulatan.

I did not receive the document that was sent.

Short ko follows hindi; the selected patient remains ang ipinadalang kasulatan. Negation does not change voice alignment.

💡
Choose aspect and voice as if the positive clause existed, then place hindi before the predicate. Do not replace the Filipino verb form with an English-style auxiliary.

Negating nonverbal predicates

Filipino does not need a copula before adjectives, nouns, or locations, and neither does their negative form.

Hindi malamig ang sabaw; maaari mo nang kainin.

The soup is not cold; you can eat it now.

Hindi manggagamot si Ruben; nars siya.

Ruben is not a physician; he is a nurse.

Hindi sa unang palapag ang tanggapan.

The office is not on the first floor.

Hindi denies malamig, manggagamot, or the locative predicate sa unang palapag. Adding ay hindi is possible in a marked topic structure—Ang tanggapan ay hindi sa unang palapag—but ay is not an obligatory translation of is.

Hindi na and hindi pa

Hindi na ginagamit ang lumang tulay.

The old bridge is no longer used.

Hindi pa ginagamit ang bagong tulay.

The new bridge is not being used yet.

Na says the earlier use has ceased; pa says an expected use has not begun. Particle choice reverses the temporal contour.

Hindi pa rin sila sumasagot sa mga tanong.

They are still not answering the questions.

The natural order is hindi + pa + rin + sila. Longer sila follows the particle sequence. See negation scope and particle order.

Questions and scope

Hindi ba bukas ang botika tuwing Sabado?

Isn't the pharmacy open every Saturday?

Hindi ba commonly seeks confirmation and may suggest the speaker expects a positive answer. It is not identical in conversational force to neutral Bukas ba ang botika?

Narrow contrast can follow hindi: Hindi si Lira ang tumawag means “It was not Lira who called,” while Hindi tumawag si Lira denies Lira's calling event.

Hindi si Lira ang tumawag; si Berto iyon.

It was not Lira who called; it was Berto.

Negation in embedded and coordinated clauses

Hindi belongs to the clause whose predicate it denies. It should not be moved beside the matrix verb merely because English places not near an auxiliary.

Sinabi ni Lira na hindi dadalo si Berto sa pagpupulong.

Lira said that Berto would not attend the meeting.

Here hindi negates embedded dadalo, not sinabi. Hindi sinabi ni Lira na dadalo si Berto instead denies Lira's act of saying it.

Hindi sinabi ni Lira na dadalo si Berto.

Lira did not say that Berto would attend.

Coordination can likewise require repetition for clear scope: Hindi siya kumain at hindi rin siya uminom clearly denies both events. A single initial hindi may have narrower or context-dependent reach. Careful writing repeats the negator when ambiguity would matter.

Hindi siya kumain at hindi rin siya uminom bago ang pagsusuri.

They neither ate nor drank before the examination.

Hindi versus wala and huwag

Hindi tahimik ang silid.

The room is not quiet.

Walang tao sa silid.

There is nobody in the room.

The first denies a property of an existing room. The second asserts absence. For a command, choose huwag:

Huwag kayong pumasok habang basa ang sahig.

Do not enter while the floor is wet.

—Bakit hindi ka sumama? —Hindi ako puwedeng umalis noon.

—Why didn't you come along? —I could not leave then.

💡
Ask whether you are denying a predicate, asserting absence, or directing someone not to act. The answers are hindi, wala, and huwag, respectively.

Common Mistakes

❌ Hindi tao sa silid.

Incorrect for 'There is nobody in the room'—use existential negative wala.

✅ Walang tao sa silid.

There is nobody in the room.

❌ Hindi kang pumasok habang basa ang sahig.

Incorrect prohibition—hindi states a fact; huwag gives a negative command.

✅ Huwag kang pumasok habang basa ang sahig.

Do not enter while the floor is wet.

❌ Hindi siya pa handa.

Unnatural particle order—pa precedes longer siya.

✅ Hindi pa siya handa.

They are not ready yet.

❌ Hindi ay mahal ang bayad.

Incorrect neutral clause—do not insert ay as English 'is.'

✅ Hindi mahal ang bayad.

The fee is not expensive.

💡
Predicate denial, absence, and prohibition belong to distinct Filipino constructions. A single English word not cannot determine the Filipino form.

Key Takeaways

  • Use hindi to deny verbal, adjectival, nominal, and locative predicates.
  • Keep the verb's aspect and voice; negation does not create a new conjugation.
  • Hindi na means no longer; hindi pa means not yet.
  • Use wala for absence and huwag for prohibitions.
  • Pronouns and particles follow Filipino cluster order after hindi.
