Po is an enclitic respect marker oriented toward the person being addressed. Opo is a respectful affirmative response, but it can also acknowledge that the speaker has heard or accepted an instruction. Neither form changes who performed the event being described, and neither is a mechanical translation of English please, sir, or ma’am.
Respect is interactional. Age, familiarity, institutional role, family practice, region, and the moment’s activity all influence whether speakers use po, respectful kayo, an address term, an indirect request, or a combination. A learner needs dependable patterns without turning variable social practice into rigid stereotypes.
Forms and interactional jobs
| Form | Main job | Typical distribution |
|---|---|---|
| po | marks respect toward the current addressee | statements, questions, requests, corrections |
| opo | respectful yes or acknowledgment | response turn; can stand alone |
| po ba | respect plus polar-question marking | careful default; conversational ba po also occurs |
| ko/mo + po | short pronoun before respect marker | early enclitic cluster |
| po + namin/ninyo/kayo | respect marker before longer pronoun | early enclitic cluster |
| hindi po | respectful negative statement or answer | not replaced by opo |
For the basic placement patterns, see po and ho as enclitic particles. This page focuses on what those forms do between speakers.
Respect targets the addressee
Nakaalis na po ang punong-guro para sa pagpupulong.
The principal has already left for the meeting. (respectful to the addressee)
The principal may not be present and need not be the respected person. Po positions the speaker respectfully toward whoever is listening.
Nakita ko po si Mang Ruben sa terminal kaninang umaga.
I saw Mr. Ruben at the terminal this morning. (respectful to the addressee)
The address title Mang shows how the speaker refers to Ruben; po shows how the speaker addresses the listener. Those are separate social choices.
This distinction explains why adding po to a sentence about an elder does not automatically “honor the elder” if the current addressee is a close peer. Conversely, a receptionist may use po while reporting an inanimate event to a client.
Direct content versus respectful and softened delivery
Compare a direct command with a respectful request:
Isara mo ang pinto bago ka umalis.
Close the door before you leave. (direct, familiar singular)
Pakisara po ang pinto bago kayo umalis.
Please close the door before you leave. (respectful request)
Three changes contribute. Paki- frames the action as a favor, po marks respect, and singular-respectful kayo increases social distance. It would be inaccurate to attribute all the politeness to po.
Respect marking also appears in factual statements:
Sa ikalawang palapag po ang tanggapan ng ingat-yaman.
The treasurer's office is on the second floor. (respectful)
There is no request and no English please. The particle manages the service encounter.
Likewise, po does not erase force. Mali po kayo is grammatically respectful, but it may still sound blunt. An apology, explanation, or impersonal wording can soften the disagreement more effectively.
Paumanhin po, ngunit Miyerkules ang nakasaad sa liham, hindi Martes.
Excuse me, but the letter says Wednesday, not Tuesday. (respectful correction)
Placement and sequencing
As an enclitic, po normally follows the first suitable predicate, negator, question word, or fronted constituent. It does not normally open a clause by itself.
Tatawagan ko po kayo kapag handa na ang resulta.
I will call you when the result is ready. (respectful)
Short ko precedes po; longer kayo follows it. The sequence sounds natural because the forms occupy the early cluster rather than English-style sentence-final politeness position.
Hindi pa po namin natatanggap ang pinirmahang kasunduan.
We have not yet received the signed agreement. (respectful)
Negator hindi hosts pa po namin. Exclusive namin excludes the addressee from the receiving group.
Saan po ba ninyo gustong ilagay ang karagdagang mesa?
Where would you like the additional table placed? (respectful)
The question word hosts po ba ninyo. The careful default is po ba; ba po is also common in contemporary conversation (informal variation) and should not be treated as incomprehensible or automatically disrespectful.
Opo as yes and acknowledgment
—Kayo po ba ang susunod sa pila? —Opo, ako nga po.
—Are you next in line? —Yes, I am. (respectful exchange)
Opo answers affirmatively. Nga po confirms the identification with respectful emphasis.
—Pakidala po bukas ang orihinal na resibo. —Opo, dadalhin ko po.
—Please bring the original receipt tomorrow. —Yes, I will bring it. (respectful acknowledgment)
Here opo acknowledges an instruction and commits to it. Intonation can still signal enthusiasm, reluctance, surprise, or impatience; the form alone does not guarantee sincerity.
A negative answer uses hindi po, wala po, or another appropriate negative predicate:
—Nakuha na po ba ninyo ang bagong kard? —Hindi pa po.
—Have you received the new card? —Not yet. (respectful)
Opo cannot serve as a general respect particle before a negative answer. It remains affirmative or acknowledging.
Po, kayo, ka, and relationship
Respectful singular kayo/ninyo/inyo often combines with po, especially with unfamiliar adults, clients, and institutional interlocutors. But the system is not a rigid stack in which every “high” feature must appear.
Kumain ka na po ba, Lola?
Have you eaten, Grandmother? (warm, familiar, and respectful)
Familiar singular ka plus po is common in many families (informal/respectful). The speaker preserves intimacy while marking respect. Kumain na po ba kayo, Lola? creates more distance or deference; neither version can be selected from age alone.
Titles and kinship terms can occur with or without po depending on local practice. The safest learner approach in an unfamiliar respectful encounter is po/opo with kayo; then follow the other person’s interactional style.
Source, certainty, and stance
Po does not mark evidence or certainty. A speaker can respectfully report confirmed, inferred, or secondhand information. Source expressions and particles such as daw/raw perform that evidential work separately.
Ayon po sa abiso, sa Biyernes darating ang bagong suplay.
According to the notice, the new supplies will arrive on Friday. (respectful report)
Ayon sa abiso identifies the source; po orients the report toward the listener. Removing po changes the social stance, not the evidence.
Register and frequency across a turn
In customer service, family talk, requests to unfamiliar people, and respectful messages, po may recur at natural clause boundaries. It need not follow every phrase. Overloading a sentence can sound rehearsed, anxious, or playful.
Academic exposition generally does not use po unless the writer directly addresses a respected reader or quotes interaction. A formal document achieves formality through genre, vocabulary, and syntax; po marks an addressee relationship, not abstract formality.
—Magandang hapon po. Maaari po ba akong magtanong tungkol sa aplikasyon? —Opo. Ano po ang nais ninyong linawin?
—Good afternoon. May I ask about the application? —Yes. What would you like clarified? (respectful service exchange)
The markers recur once per turn or clause, alongside greeting, modal wording, and respectful pronouns. This is interactional sequencing, not decoration.
Common Mistakes
Placing po at the beginning
❌ Po, bukas ba ang klinika sa Sabado?
Incorrect neutral placement — enclitic po needs an earlier host.
✅ Bukas po ba ang klinika sa Sabado?
Is the clinic open on Saturday? (respectful)
Copying sentence-final English please
❌ Maaari ba kayong umupo po sa harap?
Unnatural standard placement — po belongs in the early question cluster.
✅ Maaari po ba kayong umupo sa harap?
Could you sit at the front? (respectful)
Assuming po alone removes bluntness
❌ Mali po kayo; basahin ninyo ulit.
Pragmatically harsh despite po — respect marking does not soften the accusation or command enough.
✅ Paumanhin po, baka ibang bahagi ang nabasa natin. Maaari po ba nating suriin ulit?
Excuse me, perhaps we read different sections. Could we check again?
Using opo for a negative answer
❌ —Nakapagbayad na po ba kayo? —Opo, hindi pa.
Contradictory in the intended exchange — opo affirms, while hindi pa denies completion.
✅ —Nakapagbayad na po ba kayo? —Hindi pa po.
—Have you paid already? —Not yet. (respectful)
Key Takeaways
- Po marks respect toward the current addressee; opo is a respectful affirmative or acknowledgment.
- Po is an early enclitic, while opo can stand as a response.
- Respectful kayo, titles, indirectness, and paki- contribute meanings separate from po.
- The particle does not mark evidence, truth, or guaranteed softness, and it need not appear after every phrase.
