English forms a progressive by placing be before an -ing word. Filipino has no comparable universal auxiliary. The incompleted aspect is built inside a known voice family, normally through family-specific begun-event morphology plus partial reduplication.
The usual learner errors—repeating the prefix, copying too much of the root, retaining a citation suffix, or dropping a required hyphen—come from trying to build the form one visible piece at a time without first knowing the paradigm.
Compare complete families
| Voice family | Basic/citation | Completed | Incompleted | Formation cue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -um- actor voice | sumulat | sumulat | sumusulat | retain -um- and copy root su- |
| -um-, vowel-initial root | umalis | umalis | umaalis | retain um- and copy root-initial a- |
| mag- actor voice | magluto | nagluto | nagluluto | use nag- and copy root lu- |
| ma- stative/inchoative family | matulog | natulog | natutulog | use na- and copy root tu- |
| -in- patient voice | basahin | binasa | binabasa | internal -in- plus copied ba-; citation -hin absent |
| -an locative voice | puntahan | pinuntahan | pinupuntahan | internal -in-, copied pu-, -an retained |
| i- conveyance voice | ibigay | ibinigay | ibinibigay | i- plus internal -in- and copied bi- |
This table reveals why “add nag-” and “repeat the first syllable” are both inadequate. The affix family determines what is retained, replaced, omitted, or copied.
See incompleted aspect for the full range of ongoing, past-background, and habitual meanings. The sections below concentrate on formation errors.
Copy the root material, not the whole prefix
In the mag- family, completed nag- remains and the first consonant–vowel material of the relevant root is copied.
Nagluluto si Grace ng sopas habang naghihiwa ng gulay ang kapatid niya.
Grace is cooking soup while her sibling is cutting vegetables.
The analysis is nag- + lu- + luto, not nag- + nagluto and not nag- + lulu- + luto. Similarly, naghihiwa contains copied hi- from hiwa.
Nagtatrabaho sa munisipyo si Raul tuwing umaga.
Raul works at the municipal office every morning.
The conventional surface form is nagtatrabaho, not a form generated by repeating the first two written letters of trabaho. Consonant clusters, loans, vowel-initial roots, and morphophonemic alternations require actual paradigm knowledge.
The -um- family keeps its own pattern
With many consonant-initial roots, -um- remains while root-initial material is reduplicated.
Sumusulat si Fe ng liham para sa mga magulang niya.
Fe is writing a letter to her parents.
Bumibili kami ng sariwang isda rito tuwing Sabado.
We buy fresh fish here every Saturday.
Sumusulat and bumibili can be ongoing or habitual because the context supplies the time frame. They do not need an English-style “is/are.”
For a vowel-initial root, the surface form can look different:
Umaalis na ang unang bus, kaya bilisan natin.
The first bus is leaving now, so let us hurry.
Umaalis belongs to umalis—umaalis—aalis. There is no hyphen in the established um- form.
Patient and locative voice do not keep every citation suffix
Patient-voice basahin loses citation suffix -hin in completed binasa and incompleted binabasa. Combining both templates produces unattested binabasahin.
Binabasa ni Lito ang mga tagubilin bago niya buksan ang kahon.
Lito is reading the instructions before he opens the box.
By contrast, the -an of puntahan remains in pinuntahan/pinupuntahan:
Pinupuntahan ng nars ang bawat silid tuwing hatinggabi.
The nurse visits every room at midnight.
There is no single rule “drop the final suffix in the incompleted aspect.” The behavior belongs to the lexical voice family. Learn the basic, completed, incompleted, and contemplated forms together.
Vowel-initial roots require standard hyphenation
With mag-/nag- and a visibly vowel-initial root, the prefix boundary is hyphenated. Reduplication remains visible after the hyphen.
Nag-aaral pa sa aklatan ang mga kandidato para sa pagsusulit.
The candidates are still studying in the library for the examination.
The form is nag-aaral: nag- + a- + aral. Nag-aayos likewise derives from ayos.
Nag-aayos ba si Nena ng mga upuan sa bulwagan?
Is Nena arranging the chairs in the hall?
The question particle ba does not change formation. Nor does negation:
Hindi pa nag-aaral si Pio dahil hinihintay niya ang kaniyang mga tala.
Pio is not studying yet because he is waiting for his notes.
Under hindi pa, the incompleted form concerns the present phase of an expected activity even though the activity has not begun.
Voice remains visible in the result
Correct reduplication does not repair mismatched participant markers. Compare two unfolding events:
Nag-aayos si Nena ng mga upuan sa bulwagan.
Nena is arranging chairs in the hall. (incompleted actor voice)
Inaayos ni Nena ang mga upuang nasa entablado.
Nena is arranging the chairs on the stage. (incompleted patient voice)
Both are incompleted, but nag-aayos selects Nena as pivot, while inaayos selects the identified chairs. Formation, voice, and marker alignment have to remain consistent.
A connected exchange
—Ano ang ginagawa mo? —Kinukuha ko ang mga resibo sa kahon at inilalagay ko sa magkakahiwalay na sobre.
—What are you doing? —I am taking the receipts out of the box and putting them into separate envelopes.
The question uses incompleted ginagawa. The answer has kinukuha from kunin/kinuha and inilalagay from ilagay/inilagay. The forms cannot be predicted by attaching one common progressive ending to English take and put.
Common Mistakes
Repeating the prefix instead of root material
❌ Nagnagluto si Berta ng hapunan nang dumating kami.
Incorrect — the prefix nag- occurs once; the root begins the reduplicated material.
✅ Nagluluto si Berta ng hapunan nang dumating kami.
Berta was cooking dinner when we arrived.
Copying too much of the root
❌ Naglululuto pa sila ng pansit sa kusina.
Incorrect ordinary incompleted formation — luto copies lu- once.
✅ Nagluluto pa sila ng pansit sa kusina.
They are still cooking noodles in the kitchen.
Retaining a patient-voice citation suffix
❌ Binabasahin ni Arman ang kontrata ngayon.
Incorrect — this blends basic basahin with incompleted binabasa.
✅ Binabasa ni Arman ang kontrata ngayon.
Arman is reading the contract now.
Omitting the hyphen before a vowel-initial root
❌ Nagaaral kami sa tahimik na silid sa itaas.
Incorrect standard spelling — nag- before vowel-initial aral requires a hyphen.
✅ Nag-aaral kami sa tahimik na silid sa itaas.
We are studying in the quiet room upstairs.
Repeating the entire completed infix sequence
❌ Ininayos ng karpintero ang maluwag na bisagra.
Incorrect incompleted form — the patient-voice form of ayos is inaayos.
✅ Inaayos ng karpintero ang maluwag na bisagra.
The carpenter is repairing the loose hinge.
Key Takeaways
- Build incompleted aspect inside an established voice-and-affix family.
- Reduplicate the family-specific root material, not the prefix or an arbitrary number of letters.
- Citation suffix behavior differs: basahin → binabasa, but puntahan → pinupuntahan.
- Keep required hyphens in nag-aaral and nag-aayos.
- Memorize surface paradigms; morphophonemic and lexical restrictions defeat one universal formula.
