Both mag- and -um- form actor-voice verbs, so English meaning alone cannot choose between them. Rules such as “use mag- for deliberate actions,” “use -um- for short actions,” or “use mag- when there is an object” fail against high-frequency verbs.
The reliable unit is an established Filipino family: root, affix, conventional meaning, participant frame, and aspect forms. Semantic tendencies can help memory only after those lexical facts are respected.
What meaning can and cannot tell you
| Observation | Useful as a tendency? | Why it cannot decide alone |
|---|---|---|
| -um- often occurs with motion, change, consumption, and acquisition | yes | maglakad is also motion; magbukas can express caused change |
| mag- often occurs with sustained activity, production, occupations, and reciprocal action | yes | bumili can be deliberate and transitive; sumulat can be sustained |
| both are actor voice | structural fact | voice alignment does not determine lexical family |
| same root may allow both | root-specific fact | the forms may differ in valency or conventional meaning |
| some roots vary | usage fact | accepted overlap does not license swapping the affixes everywhere |
The dedicated choice guide gives a broad decision process. Here the focus is diagnosing the English-transfer shortcuts that produce bad forms.
False shortcut 1: deliberate action means mag-
Buying is ordinarily deliberate, yet the neutral actor-voice family is bumili—bumibili—bibili, not a mechanically created mag- family.
Bumili si Alma ng bagong kandado para sa bodega.
Alma bought a new lock for the storeroom.
Answering a person can likewise be deliberate, but the ordinary response construction uses sumagot:
Sumagot si Dario sa tanong ng guro matapos siyang mag-isip.
Dario answered the teacher's question after thinking.
Conversely, maglakad can describe ordinary walking without implying a special project:
Maglakad tayo hanggang sa terminal para makaiwas sa trapiko.
Let us walk to the terminal to avoid traffic.
Intentionality is supplied by the event and context, not encoded as a universal mag- meaning.
False shortcut 2: transitive means mag-, intransitive means -um-
Kumain readily takes a non-pivot patient:
Kumain ang mga manlalaro ng saging bago magsimula ang ensayo.
The players ate bananas before practice began.
That transitive use remains in the -um- family. Meanwhile maglakad can be intransitive, as above. The affix choice is therefore not an English transitivity switch.
Some same-root pairs do change valency, but that contrast must be learned for the particular root. With akyat, umakyat presents the mover going up, while mag-akyat commonly introduces something carried upward.
Umakyat si Tino sa ikatlong palapag para hanapin ang tagapangasiwa.
Tino went up to the third floor to look for the administrator.
Nag-akyat si Tino ng tatlong galon ng tubig sa ikatlong palapag.
Tino carried three water containers up to the third floor.
The hyphen in nag-akyat marks the prefix boundary before a vowel-initial root. The difference here is not a general definition of the two affixes; it is part of the akyat family.
Same English verb, different Filipino constructions
English open corresponds to at least two actor-voice event structures:
Bumukas ang pinto nang lumakas ang hangin sa pasilyo.
The door opened when the wind in the corridor grew stronger.
Nagbukas si Elsa ng pinto para papasukin ang mga bisita.
Elsa opened a door to let the guests in.
Bumukas selects the changing entity as pivot and does not introduce a separate causer. Nagbukas selects a causer-actor and licenses ng pinto. English uses the same spelling open and distinguishes the frames mostly by syntax; Filipino builds different verbs.
English answer also hides a lexical contrast:
Sumagot si Nilo sa tanong tungkol sa badyet.
Nilo responded to the question about the budget.
Nagsagot si Nilo ng limang tanong sa pormularyo.
Nilo answered five questions on the form.
Sumagot sa tanong profiles responding; magsagot ng mga tanong readily profiles working through answerable items. Usage overlaps at the edges, but marker frame and typical event type provide better guidance than the English gloss alone.
Family choice comes before aspect choice
Once the family is known, choose completed, incompleted, or contemplated aspect inside it.
| Root family | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated |
|---|---|---|---|
| bili, -um- | bumili | bumibili | bibili |
| luto, mag- | nagluto | nagluluto | magluluto |
| dating, -um- | dumating | dumarating | darating |
| trabaho, mag- | nagtrabaho | nagtatrabaho | magtatrabaho |
Notice that contemplated bibili and darating contain no visible -um-, while contemplated magluluto and magtatrabaho contain mag-. Choosing mag- because the English translation has will confuses family membership with aspect.
Hindi pa dumarating ang traysikel na susundo sa atin.
The tricycle that will pick us up has not arrived yet.
Hindi pa plus incompleted dumarating concerns the current expected-arrival phase. Negation does not switch the verb into a mag- family.
Accepted overlap is lexical, not universal
Some roots allow both families. Lumakad/maglakad are both established for walking; bumiyahe/magbiyahe both occur for travel, with speaker and collocational preferences. This variation is (neutral, with regional and individual preferences).
Naglalakad ka ba papunta sa munisipyo, o sasakay ka ng dyip?
Are you walking to the municipal hall, or will you take a jeepney?
Bumiyahe kami nang madaling-araw para hindi mainit.
We traveled before dawn so it would not be hot.
The existence of these accepted patterns does not validate invented lumuto or ordinary-arrival magdating. Record each doublet and its community of use individually.
A diagnostic exchange
—Sino ang mag-aakyat ng mga kahon sa bodega? —Si Kardo. Umakyat na siya roon para buksan ang pinto.
—Who will take the boxes up to the storeroom? —Kardo. He has already gone up there to open the door.
The first akyat event includes transported boxes, so mag-aakyat fits. The second has Kardo himself moving upward, so completed umakyat fits. The English verb take/go up is less useful than mapping participants.
Common Mistakes
Using mag- for every intentional action
❌ Nagbili si Marga ng gamot para sa kaniyang ama.
Incorrect in the neutral standard buying frame — the ordinary actor-voice family is bumili.
✅ Bumili si Marga ng gamot para sa kaniyang ama.
Marga bought medicine for her father.
Inventing -um- for an activity verb
❌ Lumuto ang kusinero ng adobo para sa handaan.
Incorrect in neutral standard Filipino — luto uses the ordinary mag- actor-voice family.
✅ Nagluto ang kusinero ng adobo para sa handaan.
The cook prepared adobo for the gathering.
Choosing mag- because the translation is future
❌ Magdating ang bagong kagamitan sa susunod na buwan.
Incorrect for simple arrival — future time does not change the dating root into a mag- family.
✅ Darating ang bagong kagamitan sa susunod na buwan.
The new equipment will arrive next month.
Ignoring a same-root valency contrast
❌ Nag-akyat si Ramon sa burol para panoorin ang pagsikat ng araw.
Wrong for the intended meaning that Ramon himself went up; this mag- frame ordinarily expects a transported theme.
✅ Umakyat si Ramon sa burol para panoorin ang pagsikat ng araw.
Ramon climbed the hill to watch the sunrise.
Using -um- merely because there is no object
❌ Trumabaho si Liza sa bahay buong hapon.
Incorrect — trabaho belongs to the mag- family; lack of an object does not license -um-.
✅ Nagtrabaho si Liza sa bahay buong hapon.
Liza worked at home all afternoon.
Key Takeaways

- Learn the established family and aspect paradigm of each root.
- Same-root pairs can differ in valency or conventional meaning.
- Accepted overlap belongs to particular roots and communities, not the whole vocabulary.
- Recast the event in Filipino participant structure before selecting an affix.
