Collocations with kuha and kunin

The root kuha appears in expressions for obtaining an item, retrieving something selected, taking a photograph, sitting an examination, recording a measurement, understanding a message, and capturing an exact likeness. English take and get cover all of these and many more, but their Filipino translations do not consistently use kuha.

The central contrast is between actor-voice kumuha ng + item and patient-voice kunin ang + selected item. Yet collocation can make this more than a voice alternation: kumuha ng larawan means take a photograph, while kunin ang larawan normally means retrieve or obtain the photograph. The irregular morphology is reviewed in the kuha verb-family page.

Kumuha and kunin do not preserve one meaning automatically

Actor-voice kumuha selects the getter and marks the obtained item with ng. Patient-voice kunin selects a contextually identifiable item and marks the getter with an ng/ni form.

Kumuha ang bawat bisita ng numero bago lumapit sa tanggapan.

Each visitor took a number before approaching the service desk.

Kukunin ni Alma ang mga sertipiko sa palimbagan bukas ng umaga.

Alma will collect the certificates from the print shop tomorrow morning.

The first describes a routine around the visitors. The second tracks specific certificates. This familiar voice contrast also shapes collocations: switching from kumuha to kunin can foreground an item, but it can also invite a different lexical interpretation.

💡
Do not translate kumuha and kunin as two tense forms of English take. They select different pivots, and the nouns around them can push the whole expression toward different conventional meanings.

Photography reveals how voice participates in phraseology

Kumuha ng larawan conventionally means to take a photograph. The photographer is the pivot, and the produced image takes ng.

Kumuha si Nilo ng larawan ng lumang estasyon bago ito gibain.

Nilo took a photograph of the old station before it was demolished.

To select the photographed person or scene, Filipino uses kunan/kuhanan, not ordinary patient kunin:

Kunan mo kami ng larawan habang may liwanag pa sa hardin.

Take a picture of us while there is still light in the garden.

Here kami is exclusive and refers to the group being photographed, not the addressee. The image remains ng larawan. By contrast, the following kunin clause refers to retrieving an already existing image:

Kunin mo ang larawan sa ibabaw ng scanner kapag natapos na ang pagkopya.

Take the photograph from the top of the scanner when copying is finished.

English uses take a photograph for producing an image and take the photograph for moving one. Filipino differentiates these through the whole verb-plus-marker frame.

Institutional and measuring expressions

In educational settings, kumuha ng pagsusulit can mean sit or take an examination, and kumuha ng kurso can mean take or enroll in a course. These are conventional institutional extensions, not literal acquisition.

Kukuha si Aira ng pagsusulit para sa sertipikasyon sa susunod na buwan.

Aira will take a certification examination next month.

When a particular measurement must be obtained, patient kunin is common:

Kunin muna natin ang sukat ng bintana bago umorder ng kurtina.

Let's measure the window before ordering a curtain. (literally, obtain its measurement; inclusive we)

Kinukuha ng nars ang temperatura ng mga bata tuwing umaga.

The nurse takes the children's temperature every morning.

Kinukuha is the incompleted patient form. The repeated schedule supplies the habitual interpretation; it is not an English present-tense ending.

Makuha extends from attainment to understanding

The result-oriented ma- family appears with permission, opportunity, information, and meaning. In comprehension expressions, the content understood is the selected phrase.

Hindi ko nakuha ang punto ng kaniyang mungkahi noong una.

I didn't get the point of the proposal at first.

Nakuha mo ba ang ibig sabihin ng bilin tungkol sa pagsasara ng mga bintana?

Did you understand the instruction about closing the windows?

Context determines whether nakuha means physically obtained, received, heard, or understood. This flexibility is conventional but not unlimited: it does not justify using kuha for every English sense of get.

Kuhang-kuha expresses exact capture or imitation

Reduplicated kuhang-kuha says that a photograph, performance, description, or imitation captures something exactly. The linker-bearing first copy is part of the fixed form.

Kuhang-kuha ni Mara ang boses ng kaniyang lolo kapag nagkukuwento siya.

Mara imitates her grandfather's voice perfectly when she tells stories.

Kuhang-kuha sa mural ang kulay ng dagat bago lumubog ang araw.

The mural captures the color of the sea just before sunset perfectly.

This is more specific than ordinary maganda ang kuha, “the shot came out well.” It evaluates fidelity, not merely quality.

English take often selects another Filipino verb

If kumuha ng gamot is used, it ordinarily means obtain, collect, or pick up medicine. For ingestion, say uminom ng gamot. English collapses these events under take medicine.

Uminom si Dado ng gamot pagkatapos kumain.

Dado took his medicine after eating.

Similarly, “take a break” is magpahinga, “take notes” is magtala, and “take responsibility” is akuin ang pananagutan. Phrases such as kumuha ng pahinga may be structurally interpretable under English influence, but they are not the neutral conventional choice.

Magpahinga muna tayo bago buhatin ang natitirang mga kahon.

Let's take a break before carrying the remaining boxes. (inclusive we)

💡
Translate the event, not the English verb. Ask whether someone is obtaining, retrieving, photographing, ingesting, resting, recording, or accepting responsibility; Filipino lexicalizes those events differently.

A short exchange

—Nakuha mo ba ang kopya ng mapa? —Hindi pa. Kukuha ako ng isa sa sentro ng mga bisita, tapos kukunan ko ng larawan ang karatula sa pasukan.

—Did you get a copy of the map? —Not yet. I'll get one from the visitor center, then I'll photograph the sign at the entrance.

The exchange moves from result nakuha, to actor-voice acquisition kukuha ng isa, to target-selecting photography kukunan ... ang karatula. One English root cannot preserve those distinctions.

Common Mistakes

Marking an actor-voice item with ang

❌ Kumuha si Dina ang huling kopya ng pormularyo.

Incorrect — kumuha selects Dina as pivot, so the acquired item takes ng.

✅ Kumuha si Dina ng huling kopya ng pormularyo.

Dina took the last copy of the form.

Using kunin for the photographic target

❌ Kunin mo kami ng larawan sa tabi ng lumang puno.

Wrong verb frame for the intended photograph — kunin mo kami means take or fetch us.

✅ Kunan mo kami ng larawan sa tabi ng lumang puno.

Take a picture of us beside the old tree.

Translating “take medicine” as physical acquisition

❌ Kumuha ako ng gamot bago matulog kagabi.

Wrong meaning if ingestion is intended — this says that the speaker obtained or picked up medicine.

✅ Uminom ako ng gamot bago matulog kagabi.

I took medicine before going to sleep last night.

Building the incompleted form from visible kunin

❌ Kinukunin ng tekniko ang sukat ng bawat panel.

Incorrect incompleted form — the paradigm restores kuha in kinukuha.

✅ Kinukuha ng tekniko ang sukat ng bawat panel.

The technician is taking the measurement of each panel.

Key Takeaways

Use kumuha ng when the getter is selected and kunin ang when a particular obtained or retrieved item is selected. Photography has its own contrast: kumuha ng larawan selects the photographer, while kunan ng larawan selects the target; kunin ang larawan retrieves an existing image. Learn makuha ang punto, kunin ang sukat, and kuhang-kuha as conventional expressions. English take and get frequently require an entirely different Filipino verb.
