Filipino can package an activity in a derived mag- verb—magplano, mag-ulat, magsaliksik—or in a phrase with a general verb and event noun—gumawa ng plano, gumawa ng ulat, magsagawa ng pananaliksik. These patterns may overlap in translation, but they do not freely substitute for one another. A compact verb tends to foreground the activity; an analytic phrase can foreground a product, bounded contribution, or institutionally named procedure.
The label light verb is most literal when a general verb such as gumawa or magsagawa contributes aspect, voice, and broad event structure while the noun supplies the event type. A mag- verb is morphologically one word, not a syntactic verb-plus-noun phrase, but it competes with light-verb expressions in many English-to-Filipino choices. The boundary is gradient and lexical rather than a perfectly clean rule. See the broader light-verb and serial-like constructions guide for syntactic diagnostics involving multiple predicates.
A compact pattern map
| Pattern | Typical focus | Example meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| mag- + root | activity or event | magplano “plan” | neutral when lexicalized |
| gumawa ng + product noun | created result | gumawa ng plano “draw up a plan” | neutral |
| gumawa ng + conventional abstract noun | bounded act or metaphorical result | gumawa ng paraan “find a way” | neutral, lexically restricted |
| magsagawa ng + event noun | organized procedure | magsagawa ng sarbey “conduct a survey” | (formal/academic/administrative) |
| simple lexical verb | conventional event directly | magreklamo “complain” | often more natural than a calqued light phrase |
| patient or other voice form | selected result or participant | kopyahin ang talaan “copy the list” | voice chosen by discourse |
A mag- verb foregrounds the activity
The prefix mag- forms an actor-voice family with many native and borrowed roots, but the resulting verb must be conventional. It is not a separate word meaning English do.
Nagplano ang pangkat ng bagong ruta bago nagsimula ang tag-ulan.
The group planned a new route before the rainy season began.
Mag-uulat si Leandro tungkol sa resulta ng inspeksiyon sa Biyernes.
Leandro will report on the inspection results on Friday. (neutral/formal-leaning)
The aspect forms belong inside the verb word. For magplano, compare basic magplano, completed nagplano, incompleted nagpaplano, and contemplated magpaplano. Mag-ulat keeps a hyphen because the root begins with a vowel; established consonant-initial magplano is written solid.
Mag- does not contribute one invariant “do/make” meaning. Maglinis means clean, maglakad means walk, and magdesisyon means decide. The root-plus-affix combination and its usage determine the lexical event.
Gumawa ng can foreground a product
Compare planning as an activity with producing a concrete plan:
Nagplano ang mga opisyal kung paano ililikas ang mga pasyente.
The officials planned how the patients would be evacuated. (planning activity)
Gumawa ang mga opisyal ng detalyadong plano sa paglikas para sa ospital.
The officials drew up a detailed evacuation plan for the hospital. (created product)
The two events may refer to the same meeting, but they package it differently. Nagplano foregrounds deliberation. Gumawa ng detalyadong plano presents a bounded product.
The same contrast appears with reporting:
Nag-ulat si Maya sa konseho tungkol sa nasirang tulay.
Maya reported to the council about the damaged bridge.
Gumawa si Maya ng ulat na may mga larawan at pagtataya ng gastos.
Maya prepared a report containing photographs and a cost estimate.
Nag-ulat profiles the communicative act; gumawa ng ulat profiles producing the document. English make a report and report only partly reveal this distinction.
Some gumawa ng expressions are lexicalized
In literal gumawa ng mesa, gumawa retains a strong creation meaning. In gumawa ng paraan, the verb is lighter and the combination means find or devise a way.
Gumawa ang mga nars ng paraan para makausap ng pamilya ang pasyente.
The nurses found a way for the family to speak with the patient.
No ordinary magparaan verb replaces this collocation. The pairing must be learned as a unit. Other nouns do not automatically enter the frame just because English uses make or do.
Gumawa ng desisyon is grammatical and attested, especially under English influence, but compact magpasya or widespread magdesisyon is often more idiomatic when the deciding event itself is central.
Nagpasya ang samahan na huwag munang ituloy ang paligsahan.
The association decided not to continue the contest for now. (compact neutral pattern)
This is a preference, not a ban on the analytic phrase. By contrast, combinations such as gumawa ng reklamo for “make a complaint” lack the same neutral conventional status; magreklamo is the ordinary choice.
Magsagawa ng belongs to institutional phraseology
Magsagawa ng + event noun is productive in formal, academic, technical, and administrative writing. It presents an organized procedure rather than a manufactured object.
Magsasagawa ang unibersidad ng sarbey tungkol sa kaligtasan ng mga dormitoryo.
The university will conduct a survey on dormitory safety. (academic/administrative)
Nagsagawa ng hiwalay na pagdinig ang komite para sa mga apektadong manggagawa.
The committee conducted a separate hearing for the affected workers. (formal)
In casual conversation, a specific verb is often lighter: Sinuri nila ang tubig rather than Nagsagawa sila ng pagsusuri sa tubig. The formal phrase is not more grammatical; it packages the event as an institutional procedure.
A grammatical noun phrase may still be a poor collocation
Filipino grammar allows many event nouns after ng, but convention decides whether they pair naturally with gumawa. Compare preparation as an activity with the production of a concrete planning document:
Naghanda nang mabuti ang barangay para sa posibleng pagbaha.
The barangay prepared carefully for possible flooding. (activity foregrounded)
Gumawa ang barangay ng talaan ng mga pansamantalang tuluyan at suplay.
The barangay made a list of temporary shelters and supplies. (created product foregrounded)
The first foregrounds the activity; the second names the product created as part of that preparation. By contrast, gumawa ng mga paghahanda is structurally interpretable, especially under English influence, but neutral Filipino normally prefers maghanda unless a created product is named.
English-speaker errors arise when any English make/do + noun is copied into gumawa ng + noun. “Make a complaint” becomes magreklamo, “do research” is magsaliksik or formal magsagawa ng pananaliksik, and “make a visit” is ordinarily bumisita or pumunta according to the intended event.
Voice morphology still controls the clause
Lightness does not remove voice or participant marking. Actor-voice gumawa selects the maker and marks the product with ng. Patient ginawa selects a product or task.
Ginawa ng pangkat ang tatlong bersiyon ng anunsiyo bago pumili ang direktor.
The group made the three versions of the announcement before the director chose one.
However, changing voice cannot always preserve a collocation mechanically. Isagawa ang plano conventionally means implement the plan, whereas gumawa ng plano means formulate one.
Isasagawa ng mga kawani ang plano kapag dumating na ang karagdagang kagamitan.
The staff will implement the plan when the additional equipment arrives. (formal-neutral)
The root and affix chosen inside the verb contribute lexical meaning as well as voice. This is why phraseology extends into the Filipino verb word.
Negation, questions, and a short exchange
Hindi pa ba nagpaplano ang tanggapan para sa paglipat ng mga rekord?
Isn't the office planning the transfer of the records yet?
—Gagawa ba tayo ng bagong iskedyul? —Oo, pero magplano muna tayo kung paano hahatiin ang mga gawain.
—Will we draw up a new schedule? —Yes, but let's first plan how the tasks will be divided. (inclusive we)
The exchange uses gagawa ng bagong iskedyul for the product and magplano for the preceding deliberative activity.
Common Mistakes
Inventing maggawa as the neutral actor-voice form
❌ Maggawa tayo ng pansamantalang harang sa pintuan.
Incorrect neutral formation — the established actor-voice verb from gawa is gumawa.
✅ Gumawa tayo ng pansamantalang harang sa pintuan.
Let's make a temporary barrier at the doorway. (inclusive we)
Marking the product with ang after actor voice
❌ Gumawa ang kalihim ang buod ng pagpupulong.
Incorrect — gumawa selects the secretary, so the product takes ng.
✅ Gumawa ang kalihim ng buod ng pagpupulong.
The secretary prepared a summary of the meeting.
Using a basic form for a completed event
❌ Magplano ang lupon kahapon ng bagong sistema ng pila.
Incorrect aspect for the stated completed event — use nagplano.
✅ Nagplano ang lupon kahapon ng bagong sistema ng pila.
The committee planned a new queuing system yesterday.
Copying “make a complaint” into gumawa ng
❌ Gumawa si Pina ng reklamo tungkol sa dobleng singil.
Wrong neutral collocation for the intended complaint event — Filipino ordinarily uses magreklamo.
✅ Nagreklamo si Pina tungkol sa dobleng singil.
Pina complained about the duplicate charge.
Key Takeaways
A lexicalized mag- verb foregrounds an activity, while gumawa ng + noun can foreground a conventional product or bounded result. Magsagawa ng + event noun packages an organized procedure and belongs mainly to formal institutional registers. These are preferences shaped by collocation, not interchangeable templates. Aspect and voice remain active inside the support verb, and a change of verb form may change the lexical event as well as the selected participant.
